Harvey provides examples of the kinds of frustrations that hearing
therapists working with deaf may experience;
1. Shock at sudden loss of articulateness and ease of communication;
2. Perceived lack of competency for this type of work;
3. Discouragement at the slowness of the work;
4. Physical and emotional fatigue from having constantly to attend
visually to language and communication, and from the need to be more
facially and nonverbally expressive;
5. Counterproductive rescue fantasies or extreme helpfulness arising
from guilt;
6. Confrontation with difficult or apparently disastrous cases.
The therapist may end up feeling defeated and respond by detaching or
withdrawing from the deaf patient.
