This workshop is geared toward mental health professionals who work with
the Deaf and Hard of Hearing populations and is applicable to
psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health and community interpreters,
social workers, nurses, counselors, and other professionals and
consumers wishing to enhance their skills working with hard of hearing
consumers in various treatment settings.
Workshop Overview
This workshop will provide a practical and hands-on look at how to
better work with people who have hearing loss but do not necessarily
sign. Among the major points to be covered are:
* Types and degrees of hearing loss
* Communication strategies
* Program modifications that are person-centered and effective
* Special adaptive equipment to meet every need
Participants will leave the training with an increased understanding of
how hearing loss affects the lives of their consumers and how it impacts
treatment processes. Through the use of experiential activities
participants will experience hearing loss, develop a personal "toolkit"
of strategies that work for them and will have a lot of fun in the
process.
