Course Description: This workshop will focus on the language used in Narcotics
Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, a variety of meeting formats and
the culture of these groups. The main focus will be to work on translations of
the standard literature readings that are read at the beginning and ending of
typical NA & AA meetings. We will discuss the meanings of these texts and work
in groups to come up with possible translations. We will also review a variety
of translations, some written in ASL gloss and others signed in ASL on
videotape. We will also discuss some of the jargon and terms specific to these
groups. Participants will receive a CD-rom of a variety of resources related to
interpreting in NA & AA meetings.
Presenter Biography: Sandy Cottrell has been an interpreter since 1984. She
started her career at East Carolina University as a student interpreter. She
then went on to interpret in an elementary school for three years. After
completing her B.A. degree in Elementary Education, she went to work at Walter
B. Jones Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center. She then went back to work
full time at East Carolina University as an interpreter and as the Coordinator
of the Sign Language Studies/Interpretation minors, and taught interpreting
classes for 5 ½ years. While working at ECU, Sandy completed her Master's Degree
in Adult Education. In 1999, Sandy became a freelance interpreter working mostly
in mental health, medical, vocational and educational settings.

program is offered for .6 CEU's in the Content Area of Professional Studies and
has an Instructional Level of Beginner to Intermediate. No partial CEU's will be
awarded for this workshop.
**If you are a member of RID's CMP or ACET maintenance program, be sure to bring
your RID membership number with you. As of December 1, 2005, members will have
to put their correct membership number on the Scantron forms in order to receive
their CEU's for this event.
