Jill Afrin, MD in South Carolina has done a lot of training for other
psychiatrists (including at the American Psychiatric Association) on the
unique psychopharm treatment effects of medications on Deaf people... She
is a great resource...
There are no psychopharmacological treatments specific to the deaf
population, but there are issues that arise when medication is
recommended.
1) communication difficulties faced by a deaf/hard of hearing
individual experiencing visual and extrapryamidal side effects.
2) reactions to the medication when the deafness was ascribed to
ototoix medication or high oxygen concentrations in infancy.
These can lead to an understandable reluctance to consent to drug
treatments where side effects are common.
