DID YOU KNOW......

DID YOU KNOW......

Findings in a study conducted of a case file review from 1969 to 2002
(Iqbal, Dolan and Monteiro, 2004) show that deaf sex offenders are
primarily male, single, have child victims and low rates of major mental
disorders. This cohort also had high rates of intellectual impairment
[mental retardation], poor communication with caregivers, little sex
education and a history of sexual offences in public places.

While no mental disorder was diagnosed in the majority of offenders,
almost half had an [erroneously] documented past psychiatric history
which included schizophrenia/psychosis, personality disorder and alcohol
abuse. The actual prevalence of major mental disorders for sexual
offenders is relatively low at 24.8%.
