Information about the Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) population born
during the 1960s.
(HKNC 1991 Rubella Survey Report)
Vernon, Grieve and Shaver reported that about 33% of rubella individuals
have visual defects and 20-50% of rubella infants had cataracts. In
another study almost 10% of patients with prior eye damage developed
additional forms of eye damage as a delayed manifestation. (Sever,
South, Shaver) CRS adults who are deaf with no previous vision problems
have also been found to be developing glaucoma at much higher rates than
the general population. (Fendun)
35-76% of rubella individuals have heart disorders. (Vernon, Grieve
Shaver).
A high incidence of diabetes mellitus is seen among patients with
Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). (Waxharn and Wolinsky)
A Canadian survey found that 24% of their respondents indicated a
problem with swallowing, gagging or vomiting. Most of these cases
occurred in early childhood, while some reported the first onset from
the teen years or later. (Monroe)
Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and thyroiditis have all been reported
as delayed manifestations of CRS. One study identified 5% of patients
with CRS. (Sever, South and Shaver).
New neurological abnormalities may occur. These abnormalities include
behavior disorders and seizure disorders. (Sever, South, and Shaver)
