ADARA invites you to participate in
"Recovery from What? Implementing the
Recovery Model with D/HH People"
A Pre-Conference Workshop at SERID 2004

Workshop Description:
Public and private social and health service providers are
increasingly turning to evidence-based practices, which address
recovery outcomes in terms of increased effectiveness. The
principles of recovery (e.g., hope, personal responsibility and
selfadvocacy,
education and support) are also important to deaf/hh
people dealing with mental illness or substance abuse; their
implementation has not always been "deaf-friendly".

In addition, deaf consumers need to learn about system changes,
such as: expansion of the case manager role; less reliance on
institutional treatments like hospitalization or partial
hospitalization;
more emphasis on intensive outpatient programs, drop-in centers,
and peer support; increased employment of consumers in behavioral
health organizations, and addition of mental health services to
nonmental
health environments (e.g., YMCAs). We must all become
skilled at advocacy, so that deaf consumers can achieve full benefit
from these changes.

This workshop will describe the key concepts of the recovery model,
provide illustrations/demonstrations and examples of recovery
materials adapted for use with deaf/hh consumers, that will help
them understand their illness(es), learn effective strategies for
recovery and maintaining wellness, develop self-advocacy skills and
effective use of advocacy on their behalf by mental health
professionals and providers.

Workshop Presenters:
Wendy Heines, MA. is the Director of Operations at Deaf Services Center
(DSC) located in the
Philadelphia area. She has over 15 years experience working with Deaf
and Hard of hearing consumers
in mental health settings. She has become an expert in setting up new
programs.

Tovah M. Wax, Ph. D., LCSW, is currently Psychology Consultant for the
Raleigh office of Disability
Determination Services (Social Security). Previously, she was Program
Director for the Deaf Services
Unit at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, NC, and on the faculty for the
Liberal Arts and Human
Development Departments at National Technical Institute for the Deaf,
Rochester Institute of Technology,
Rochester, NY. During that time, Dr. Wax was associate professor of
psychology, and chair of
Psychological Services, and held adjunct faculty positions in education,
social work, and school
psychology departments. Dr. Wax has also been Coordinator of Statewide
Mental Health Services to
Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Persons in Washington, and assistant professor
at the Department of
