TITLE: Regional Interpreter

DEFINITION:
This is a position serving people who are deaf and hard of hearing and
who have mental illness, substance abuse issues and/or mental
retardation.
Work involves interpreting for the Regional Coordinator for the
Deaf and for clients of the Alabama Department of Mental Health and
Mental Retardation who are deaf or hard of hearing, and are served
through the regional office of Deaf Services. Additionally, the
interpreter will coordinate the provision of interpreter services
throughout the region, provide interpreting for events relating to the
Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation and/or its
contract provides, providing technical support, and teaching sign
language classes. Workers in this class are supervised by the Regional
Coordinator for the Deaf.
QUALIFICATIONS:
. Eligible to work according to the Alabama Licensure Board of
Interpreters and Transliterators at the level of a Licensed Interpreter.
. Bachelors degree in medical or human service field preferred.
. Some college required.
. Three years experience interpreting for deaf individuals in a
variety of settings required.
. Experience working in Mental Health or Medical settings strongly
preferred.
. Certification as a Qualified Mental Health interpreter is
preferred. If not currently held, willingness to obtain certification
at the earliest practicable time.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
. Must demonstrate knowledge and experience using a personal
computer and related software.
. Must have a valid driver's license to operate a vehicle in the
State of Alabama.
