Mentoring Program   Message List

Hi fellow interpreters, I'm sending this to several listservs so sorry
for the repeat if you are on several but wanted feedback from as many
interpreters as possible - some of you I may know and some not. I am
coming to you to ask your assistance. I'm working with Signs of
Development now and very excited. I'm working to implement a mentoring
program for interpreters (including Deaf interpreters!) and students
with an emphasis on webcams and video mentoring. This is where I'm
coming to you to ask for assistance and guidance to see what you need
and what you could use.
We will be using webcams to chat and provide language exposure and
specific guidance as well as internet access to communicate and exchange
videotapes via distance mentoring, etc. Of course, will be able to
provide any of Signs' huge array of CD workshops to be able to focus on
specific skill areas which is a GREAT plus!
Question for you all - what sort of things would you like to see in a
program like this? What do you think people (interpreters) would be
willing to pay or what will the market bear for a program that focuses
on individual (and group) mentoring compared to someone taking a bunch
of workshops and not getting something that specifically meets their
needs? Should there be a discount for students and if so, what do you
think is doable? Would that be something you think would benefit them in
their practicum or regular studies? I know, as a Deaf person, that Deaf
club activities are not as abundant as they used to be so I would bet
that students and interpreters who are wanting to increase their skills
and certification are finding it more difficult to find activities to
attend? In this way, they would have a safe environment to chat with a
Deaf person and not have to worry about who was watching or whether the
person really wanted to talk to them.
Let me know what you think - I'll be interested to see what you have to
say to help me develop this program more! By the way, have you seen some
of these CD workshops - WOW, I was really impressed and only heard about
them but now that I have seen them, they have some great workshops for
interpreters and especially Deaf interpreters - I'm so excited about
this, can you tell?
Warm Regards,
~Deborah
