Subject: [AIPL] Hello from a new member. So where is the moderator?
Hi members,
I noticed that there are messages from non-professionals here,
besides tha spam. Is there an active moderator for this group?
I am not a professional so I will be lurking in the background for
ideas and I hope the professionals who are in this group don't mind.
Introduction: I am a parent who advocates for my now 9 yr old son,
Kevin, who was once a low functioning autistic and is now in the
high functioning end of the spectrum. His diagnosis label now swings
between PDD-NOS with ADD to Aspergers, depending upon the
experience of the professional I am dealing with. I don't care
about the label, only help for the reduction of symptoms that effect
his quality of life and activities of daily living, as well as an
IEP which shows identification of needs with individual steps
towards improvement. Just when you have something that works,
development for the better occurs in oce area, deficits stand out in
another demanding new or revised plans..... boy am I tired. lol!
My particular needs at this time are forideas on behavior
interventions that would help him learn to become more independent.
He has issues but my main concern inability to care for or about his
personal needs. He lives with dysgraphia, fine motor issues, has
educational problems due to difficulty with pragmatics: above
average intellegence but low performance in math and language arts
comprehension unlesss it is a subject he cares about.
He suffers with overstimulation and understimulation of most senses,
a tendency to over-focus on and perseverate on thoughts and subjects
of interest to him alone and is easily physically resistive to
anyone disturbing his attention or not attending to his. Even with
friends and school,he has to be re-directed to attend to to the task
at hand. Despite the 1/2 hr a day at school with pragmatic social
skills, I fear this will effect his social life as he grows older,
He has been on different medications for the physical agression,
attention and anxiety but we are having to try new ones lately
because he is not responding to them as he once did.
I still cannot get him to dress himself without some assistance,
brush his teeth correctly without it being a sensory ordeal, use the
toilet routinely when his body needs to go (especially when he is
overabsorbed in an activity), care for himself in the bathroom
without some amount of feces left as evidence. At school, the
bathroom is a refuge, but out of that structured environment, he'll
just go in his pants and think that no one can smell I am always
on the lookout for behavior plans and educational ideas because I
essentially have to force the schools where we live to create and
provide the appropriate education and services he needs. Because we
live in a remote area with few services, I drive him 250+ miles rt
to Baltimore Kennedy Krieger Institute when I can but but he needs
to he is higher functioning, it is very difficult to get help at
home, which he needs.
Right now I am having a difficult time getting ideas for
whatever "individualized instruction" he needs for all subjects on
his IEP without unmainstreaming him and the school seems just as
mystified.
Currently, I am in a burn out phase praying for a resurgence (which
comes eventually as long as I persist.) I look forward to reading
the archives here and reading future intervention ideas.
My email address is kittykittycat1921@... for anyone with
questions related to my introduction here, which would be off topic
to this board of professionals. I also hope the moderator posts a
note, as this spam issue can be easily corrected. I run a private
yahoo alumni group and we prescreen members. This group does not.
That is why I was able I join.
