Subject: RE: [AIPL] Hello fellow Aspies
I recently was talking to someone (a professional educator for the
autistic)
about my son, who is diagnosed with NVLD. Interestingly, she made this
comment, which I am quoting from her email. This is not meant as
professional advice so take it for what's it worth but it may be
interesting
for those of you with NVLD to look into for your own purposes:
"No time to write at the moment, but since you've mentioned it, I've been
told by various researchers that Asperger's and NVLD are the same thing,
but
earned two different names because two different researchers, in two
different fields, named the same set of symptoms at different times.
Hans Asperger, in Germany, first identified very high-functioning kids with
autism in 1944 (the same year Leo Kanner identified autism here in the
United States-also naming it 'autism'!)
Asperger's work wasn't translated for years, and when it finally was people
used his last name to talk about normal IQ kids who didn't have language
delays.
I think that the person who came up with NVLD may have been Canadian (don't
hold me to this!) and I believe he was a neuropsychologist, not a clinician
or psychologist."

Hi Darren: Yes, I think I have that, too. NVLD, <Non-Verbal Learning
Disability, for those of you scoring at home>
Is like AS, you do what u can to work around it, and get where you
want/need
to go. It's not that we don't learn, it's just that we learn differently,
and have to work much harder at reading/interpreting the non verbal cues
that we receive.
One way I try to do this is by trying to see the context in which the
person
is communicating. Sometimes you can take the words that somebody is saying,
and thus you can "decode" what their non-verbal cues are indicating.
Good luck, and hang in. Positive attitude is the key. You gotta believe,
and
you gotta be willing to work at it. But, you can do it.
David
