In memoriam of Jack Singh
Jack Singh -- HIV/AIDS activist, Malaysia's longest living person with HIV/AIDS
and most importantly, a friend -- passed away peacefully on 11 August 2003
finally succumbing to liver coma.
Jack who has lived bravely with HIV for more than 18 years was at home with his
much loved mom at his side. His funeral was held on 11 August and attended by
many of his close friends and family members.
Jack was loved and respected by many for his work for the HIV-positive community
in Malaysia and abroad. He helped pioneer the "Global Network for People Living
with HIV/AIDS" (GNP+) as well as its Asia Pacific Network (APN+). His
involvement with HIV/AIDS work started with Pink Triangle Malaysia and he was a
founder member of PT's Positive Living (a support group by and for People Living
with HIV/AIDS in Malaysia). He later represented the HIV-positive community and
served a term as an Executive Committee member of the Malaysian AIDS Council.
Jack shared his experiences and needs of the community from early on when most
PLWHAs in Malaysia were too scared to come out for fear of discrimination. My
first meeting with Jack was in 1994 at a Ministry of Health dialogue where i
was soo taken by his passion to create positive change. And in 1999, he made
another huge impact, coming onto stage with his mother at the Opening Ceremony
of the 5th International Congress on AIDS in Asia & the Pacific, held in Kuala
Lumpur. Both mother and son received a standing ovation from an estimated
audience of 3,000+ comprising of our Prime Minister as well as other players in
the HIV/AIDS arena, including doctors, scientists, activists and PLWHAs.
Jack is remembered by many in so many different ways -- his great cooking, his
sense of fun, his hand-made mirrors, one time passion for sun-flowers! For most
of us Jack is best known as a GIVER of passion and his fervent desire to live
life to the fullest. May he rest in peace.
