Jogjakarta Roundtable Meeting
Access to ARV Treatment ASEAN Situation
(One Year After Canberra Round Table Meeting)
Indonesia, 1-3 September 2003
The Canberra Roundtable Meeting, which was held on September 20-24,
2002, has successfully triggered the countries with limited resources
to strive for access to HIV/AIDS therapy. The meeting has formulated
strategic framework for significantly increasing access to HIV
treatment. The strategic framework is based on the accumulated
knowledge and experience of the participants. It is expected that by
2005 there will be 600,000 people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) in
Asia-Pacific region will have an increased access to HIV/AIDS therapy.
Progress has been greatly achieved one year after the meeting. Each
of participating countries has made significant accomplishment but
also faced immense obstacles in local as well as international level.
Therefore, it is urgent to conduct another meeting among ASEAN
countries in a bid to assess progress that has been achieved in the
post Canberra meeting.
Yogyakarta Roundtable Meeting offers opportunities to share
experiences among ASEAN countries and other participating countries
and to discuss a major theme of "With the Support of International
Collaboration Towards National Self-Reliance". Every country
ultimately has the ability to show its self-sufficiency in delivering
access to HIV/AIDS therapy so that it does not depend on other
countries' support.
The meeting also aims at discussing the Roles of Media in the efforts
of increasing access to therapy. The media has big potential in
delivering advocacy to support the increase of access to therapy.
Jogjakarta Roundtable Meeting resembles the Canberra meeting in its
way of discussion, in which every topic of discussion will be
delivered through Case Studies. Through intensive discourses, all
