ABOUT CARAT
The Cell for AIDS Research Action and Training (CARAT) of Tata Institute of
Social Sciences has been active in training and capacity building for HIV/AIDS
since 1993:
· Training as Western Regional Center for the National AIDS Counselling
Training Programme.
· Training and capacity-building for countries in South Asia.
· Chairing the NACO Technical Resource Group on Counselling.
· Training for paraprofessionals, health educators, students and
researchers in counselling and HIV research.
WHY A TRAINING INSTITUTE?
As the HIV pandemic has progressed, so too the need for personnel who are
equipped to respond to HIV/AIDS in a suitable and effective manner. CARAT has
received repeated requests for long term training programmes. The Training
Institute is our way of ensuring a flexible programme that offers a
qualitative educational input.
It is an intensive, certificate programme that encompasses various HIV/AIDS
interventions (counselling, prevention, care and research) for professionals
who are seeking to upgrade their knowledge and skills. It includes field work,
and action based research with experienced faculty from the Tata Institute of
Social Sciences as well as from major NGOs working in the field of HIV/AIDS.
This Institute is an annual 10-week residential programme.
Professionals who have obtained post-graduate degrees in social work,
psychology, medicine, counselling, nursing or human development are eligible.
We prefer people with commitment to and experience in the field of HIV/AIDS.
PLWHA’s will be given preference.
CURRENT DATES: 10th November 2003 to 16th January 2004
CRITERIA FOR APPLICATION:
· Fluency in English is a must.
· Previous work experience/currently working in the field of HIV/AIDS/
Reproductive Health/ Sexual Health.
COURSE CONTENT
175 hours of theory
168 hours of field work (4 weeks)
· Course Evaluation
The seven courses will be taught in a modular fashion, which will enable
individuals to opt for selected inputs (within reasonable limits).
Evaluation will be undertaken through assignments, class presentations and
class participation.
Certificates will be awarded only on completion of all courses and on
completion of each course requirements.

Course 1:
ë HIV/AIDS, STI’s and RTI’s
Course 2:
ë Sexuality and Gender
Course 3:
ë HIV related Counselling
Course 4:
ë Developing macro- and macro interventions
Course 5:
ë Management of Prevention and Care Programmes
Course 6:
ë HIV and Development
Plus one of two optional courses
Course 7:
ë Introduction to HIV/AIDS Research
ë Introduction to Training Methodology
At the end of the training institute, we expect that the participants will:
· Be able to analyze psycho-social, ethical, legal and human rights
aspect
of HIV and AIDS from the health and development perspectives.
· Possess skills in HIV-related counselling and interventions for
prevention and care at all levels.
· Possess skills in research, advocacy, programme management and
training at various levels.
COST OF THE ENTIRE PROGRAMME
Course Fees only: Rs. 10,000/
Residential facilities & Meals: Rs. 14,500/ (subsidized rate)
Total Cost: Rs. 24,500
(Above rates are only applicable for Developing Countries)

Residential facilities and meals: $ 500
Total Cost: $ 900
The above cost does not include travel in Mumbai during fieldwork.
Participants have to make their own arrangement for travel to attend the
programme.
