Re: Statement from WNU on UNAIDS Ethics of Clinical Trials workshop   Message List

Dear All,

This is indeed extremely sad... UNAIDS should have done its homework
BEFORE they recruited the translator for the Cambodian group, from FHI.

I am in full agreement with WNU and their concerns re conflict of interest: FHI
is one of the parties of the now-infamous Tenofovir trials - and their
explanations in defense of the trial have never held water.

I still feel this UNAIDS effort to develop globally-acceptable ethical norms for
research on sex workers and other marginalised key populations is important -
therefore I hope that UNAIDS takes necessary safeguards during the consultation
to hear and respect sex worker group representatives' concerns during the
meeting to ensure that what emerges as final guidelines/products do not go
against the interests of sex worker communities and other key population groups
at risk of HIV.

In solidarity,

Dr. Amitrajit Saha
