Membership of AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific suspended.
As per a notice circulated by the AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP),
the Individual membership of AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific has been
dissolved. "... that currently, apart from the members of the Executive
Committee, no memebers of ASAP exists"
The membership has been replaced by an appointed 17 members committee by Prof.
Dennis Altman the president of ASAP. This committee is expected to meet next
only in Kobe during 1-5th July 2005.
Many independent observers noted that the dissolution of the ASAP general
membership without consulting the members has been an attack on the principles
of transparency, accountability and the civil societies right to participate in
responses to HIV/AIDS in Asia Pacific.
"It would have been appropriate to present an audited statement of accounts of
ASAP before the general membership has been suspended" One of the leading AIDS
activists commented.

and the Pacific and the legitimacy of an appointed 16 member committee is
