kindly invite you to attend a 9th ICAAP-affiliated special session:
`Enhancing HIV Prevention for Adolescents
through Effective Health and Sexuality Education'
Saturday, 9 August 2009
9 am – 4 pm
Goodway Hotels and ResortNusa-Dua, Bali , Indonesia
Plan International, PATH, UNESCO, UNICEF and UNFPA have joined hands to organize a special session on school-based HIV prevention through health and sexuality education. This session will be of particular interest to education policy makers and planners, Ministry of Education, HIV focal points, National AIDS Programme staff, sexual health and HIV education specialists, NGOs and those who are generally interested in HIV prevention among adolescents.
Why should I attend?
This session will talk about what effective school-based HIV prevention is about, how to enable successful health and sexuality education policies and programmes and how to implement them effectively across the region. The session will present successful practices from different countries and discover how these were designed, disseminated and implemented. The session will focus on distilling lessons learnt from these practices, so that they can be taken on board and applied in other countries.
What is the issue?
HIV prevention, packaged either in the context of sexuality education or health education, is both a need and a right of adolescents. Evidence from a range of contexts shows that, if properly designed and implemented, health and sexuality education programmes can improve young people's knowledge and skills. They are essential for coping with puberty, developing personal relationships, preventing HIV, delaying experimentation with alcohol and drugs, as well as improving attitudes towards people living with HIV.
What will happen?
Morning session
The morning session will examine the policy environment for health and sexuality education in Asia and the Pacific, including:
- Presentation of an Asia-Pacific policy review study on health, HIV and sexuality education;
- Discussion of draft inter-agency guidelines on Sex, Relationships and HIV Education;
- Short country presentations from government and key players in relevant Ministries;
- A panel discussion (UN, NGO, senior government officials, student representatives);
- Questions and discussion.
Afternoon session
The second part of the workshop will be practitioner-focussed. We will move from theory into practice. Research evidence will be presented. The session will consider the following areas:
- Curriculum development;
- Assessing learning outcomes;
- Teacher education;
- Peer education;
- Parental involvement;
- Student participation;
- Innovative activities and approaches.
Additionally, a `Market Place' will be organized at the event to display materials for effective implementation such as guidelines, learning tools, curriculums and session plans. Participants will also have the opportunity to sign up for e-mail learning forums.
