Does anyone give their volunteers free lunch when they volunteer? Do you have required time slots, or can they just come in and volunteer only 5 or 10 hours and be done? Thanks Jan
Not only volunteers but employees. We are required to do a background check which costs $25 a pop. I am now doing the background check last, if they pass all the other hurdles first, then that is the last step.
You can explain, explain, explain all about the TB test being non-invasive, will not cause any problems. But I've lost many a potential volunteer even tho this gets explained thoroughly. I'm getting smarter in my old age!
I find the best way to use adults is to give them specific tasks, and they are comfortable with that. I have one lady who delivers the menus every week, etc.
That's also the best way to pitch it, sell them on a specific task, and they feel more comfortable with this.

We have one faithful volunteer that brings bananas every Tuesday and plays Bingo with the residents 2 Tuesdays a month. He always gets a free lunch. This gentleman has been bringing bananas to the residents for well over 20 years! He does room visits with many of the residents. He is a religious man and also prays with several residents. We figure the least we can do is give him a free meal. He always eats with the residents.
We are working on setting up requirements for our volunteers. We tend to get several high school students that want to come for 2-6 hours. There is too much of our time in training residents, getting them through orientation for 2 hours. Also, when a lot of them hear that they are required to take a TB test they freak out! We are going to start asking them to commit to at least 20 hours over a 2wk period or something so it makes it worth our time to have them there. Also, we are thinking about an age limit, we arent
babysitters. Believe it or not, this has been an issue.

Our volunteer are not schedualed we suggest our students come in on weekend as
we just have one staff member so they help out. our adult volunteers come and go
when convienient for them. I do give the adult a few r to do one-ones when they
are here. We do have an orientation tour the facility go over do's and donts
and procedure. takes all of 15 min. if vollunteer is in the facility more than
10 hrs a month then they have to recieve the TB shot. As i posted earlier Nov
thru Dec we are having no student volunteers just adults we are taking a pro
active approach to the flu epidemic.

Our facility also provides a gift for every resident. "Santa" brings them
around during the Christmas party. We have one group that brings in home made
gifts (lap quilts, pillows, hats, scarves, etc) for each resident. We have
another group that individualize gifts for residents that dont have family. Our
parties start at 6pm, we serve appetizers, desserts, soda, sparkling cider, and
wine. The families are invited and we have a music program scheduled. This is
usually a standing room only event! We always have it in the living room with
nice decorations and buffet style tables set up. Santa goes room to room while
everyone is eating and enjoying the music, then the musician plays "here comes
Santa Claus" when we give her the signal and Santa brings gifts to those in the
party!
Not sure what we will be getting yet this year. Still thinking on that one!
Have a good weekend all!

Our volunteers have a schedule and we encourage them to stick to a schedule if they are helping out or conducting group programs. As for volunteers that coming to do visits, we encourage them to stick to a schedule but if they need to make a change or want to come into visit another day or time, I am fine with that as long as they give a call just to make sure that it works with the day’s schedule.
As for lunch, we provide a lunch to volunteers that come more then 4 hours.

I also contact the churches and alot of ladies from the ladies group or mens groups like to volunteer.

I have several types of volunteers. There are ones who are regularly scheduled
for anywhere from 3 to 8 hours/day and may work one, two or more days/week and
do visits, run programs, etc... Then there are elementary school groups who come
in twice a month for about 2 hours and do crafts or bingo. Then there are
volunteers who are family and just show up asking for something to do. There is
always something for each type to do.
Cultivate your volunteers and give back to them. In my facility, any volunteer
who works 4 hours or more a day gets a free lunch. I also do a Volunteer
Luncheon during National Volunteer Week. This is a fancy lunch with musical
entertainment and award recognition.
Additionally, I have a corner of the room devoted to volunteers with a table,
sriting material, pens, candy, newsletter and calendar. I do volunteer
recognition on the bulletin board and give small gifts throughout the year

Our volunteers get a free meal if they want it during meal time. They come and go as they please no set times for them... otherwise they come at all... to much like a job if that have to be here from 9-1 or other specific hours. MOst of ours come and do their thing for the required time they need for school or college or whatever and then we never see them again. We have mostly hugh school kids, very few adults if any!!
Any ideas for volunteer recruitment???

When we had our Eden Alternative training they showed us care plans like this. Perhaps if you went to the website at edenalt.org they might be able to help you. I think these are wonderful and help create a more personal view of our clients. If that doesn't help, email me and I will try and find someone who can.
