I teach the Modular Education Program for Activity Professionals in NJ
and recently adapted the program for independent study. I am very
exicted to say it was approved by NCCAP and is now available. The
course is divided into two parts - Part I and II. Each part has six
lessons. The lessons include reading, internet research, video
analysis, interview of residents/clients/staff, projects and other
work. The student must also complete a practicum with each part as
well. You can see more information about the course on my web site.
http://www.dhspecialservices.com/mepapindependentstudy.htm

I have also created a group for the class.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dhspecialservices/

My site also offers several independent study programs which are
applicable toward your initial certification or renewal. Many of the
programs are acceptable toward the new specialty certifications
introduced by NCCAP in January.

for more information, visit my web site or call 609-698-9530.

I also had a hard adjustment. I went from adult day heath to long
term. Don't feel fustrated because I learned that every facility is
different. It's not just the state regs. but each facility has there
own way of wanting things done. Ask your MDS corrdinator they will be
of great help. Also ask them to put a list in your mail box on Monday
for the MDS reports due for the coming week and let them know what a
great help that would be and once you let them know that it's a help
they will really be putting great things in there for you. Good luck.

Hi Candace,
I have the same problem. But the perfect way is to get the residents
to raise kain to go to activities. My way is we do a butterbean
auction once a month. I buy things I know they want or need like real
tissues and nice lotion and some staff donate things. Each resident
starts with 20 butterbeans and they "bid" with the beans rather than
money. But to get them to want to attend other activities each
resident earns two extra butterbeans for each activity they attend
during the month. They didn't catch on untill the first time that
other people had more beans than they did. Now the stay on the
nursing staff to get them up for activities.

I bought small draw string bags and used M&M's that way the ones with dementia could still participate and if they couldnt remember to save them they would be ok eating them.

Hello all!
Hi guys I need some input. We are all going through transitions for the new
culture change. Bringing the nursing homes into a more personal place to live.
Well I had a resident come to my office today to talk to me alone. She made a
very good point but I need ideas as to how to put it into motion. We recently
lost one of our long termers. Since they have been pulling together to help each
other and they are neighbors when someone passes they don't even find out about
it except in a round about way. They want a picture of who was lost and a chance
to speak of the friend they once knew. Do any of you do something like this?
Thanks

we have a dying with dignaty program. our chaplain takes the lead on it but
staff have adopted it is a common practice if he is not available.

we place a rose and sign with their name (in memory of) in several areas when
someone passes away.when the person first passes away, staff and residents are
invited to be a part of a processional to accompany the body to the car. we
cover it with a special cloth / paul we had made (body bags and so impersonal
and can be scary to some residents) we ring chimes during the walk and say a
prayer before the resident is put into the hurse. we also occasionally have a
memory card that staff/ residents sign with special memories they would like to
share of the person. the card is given to the family.
if we know someone is close to passing, we set up a vigil with staff if they
have no family so they arnt alone when it happens. if they do have family we
send food, magazines, and anything else they might need so that they dont have
to leave their loved ones side.

hope this helps.

Easter  cookies, egg dying and centerpiece craft for our dining room  tables..to name just a few! I hope some of that helps:-)

I have a bulletin board that is our "Memory Board". I found a poem called
"Butterflies are Forever" and matted it in a 11X14 frame. I use the last photo
of the resident who has passed away and include their obit and mat these on
colored cardstock, then add a silk butterfly. I have received many compliments
from residents and family members on this board.

Ive found that you need to assign volunteers a specific job. find out what their
strengths are. maybe they can play the piano,or help residents on the computer.
some of the younger volunteers need a job or else you will feel more like a baby
sitter (who has time for that) and if they have nothing meaningful to do they
wont come back. things like calling bingo or changing bulliten bords are good
too. ive also had volunteers pop popcorn, help decorate for holidays, passing
mail or calendars/ weelky bullitens.

I also had one who would come in weekly and play cards with them. he was
mentally and physically handicapped but was always supervised by HIS aide or a
family member. at first it took a lot of time with me having to be right there
but once he was confotable i could get some other things done only checking in
once in a while.

My volunteers have a 'schedule' of when to come. For example Tuesday from 12:30 to 3:30. and the adults I can call and say, "Help me!" and they help for other days.

I have a question concerning volunteers. Do you just tell people that come in your facility wanting to volunteer to just pick a activity and come in when they want, or do you call them to ask for assistance?

All replies to my question would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you,

I am a nurse. Our  facility has the nursing department  conduct activities on the unit. The Rec Therapist claims they don't have time due to having to also provide for the other long-term care residents and the skilled residents. Not at one facitlity but 2. They have us write up a calendar of activities that we know we can accomplish in the evenings and not get the residents stirred up more than they already are. They want us to play basketball, ring-toss and magnetic darts after supper. They don't realize that is to stimulating for that time of the evening. Also, they don't have to take a alzheimer's course anymore because they dropped the accrediation to be a specialty unit for alzheimer's residents. They claim they don't need to have 6 hours of training. it can be learned on the job! I work in a mixed up group. HELP!

Heather you are so right, if a volunteer does not have anything meaningful to do they won't come back.

Ive found that you need to assign volunteers a specific job. find out what their strengths are. maybe they can play the piano,or help residents on the computer. some of the younger volunteers need a job or else you will feel more like a baby sitter (who has time for that) and if they have nothing meaningful to do they wont come back. things like calling bingo or changing bulliten bords are good too. ive also had volunteers pop popcorn, help decorate for holidays, passing mail or calendars/ weelky bullitens.

I also had one who would come in weekly and play cards with them. he was mentally and physically handicapped but was always supervised by HIS aide or a family member. at first it took a lot of time with me having to be right there but once he was confotable i could get some other things done only checking in once in a while.

The activities that we do with skilled, long term and short term with alzheimers
are very social and sensory such as a reminiscing group where we talk about the
old days. We also have a Book club that we search for the month to find
informative info regarding upcoming holidays or seasons or just funny jokes that
we have gotten off the internet. For relaxing , we buy calming sound cds or use
sensory dvds for their enjoyment. Most residents either drift off to sleep or
get real quiet for awhile. Another idea for short term memory loss patients is
to gather materials of a different nature and have them feel and try to guess or
tell a short story as to when they might want to wear material like that.

Hi Christine! & all!
Our facility is down the street from a high school and we get them calling
usually twice a year when they need their credits. (Its a private Catholic
School) We had to finally tell them that we needed a commitment from them of at
least 20 hours. They were wanting to come in for 3-4 hours to get their credits
and that was it. First of all they are required to have inservice/training for
at least that long, then of course there is the TB testing. Our county requires
volunteers to have the TB test unless they have a negative current within one
year. And yes, it often feels like baby sitting with these high school kids.

We have a couple of people that volunteer, one brings bananas for the residents
and plays Bingo with them twice a month. He spends at least 4 hours at our
facility each week. He visits residents in their rooms and has lunch with them
as well. He has been doing this for over 15 years! We also have a lady from
the Convalescent Hospital Ministries that comes twice a month for a non
denominational Christian service. She is golden as well, 81 years old! The
residents adore her! And of course there is her piano player! Church wouldn't
be the same with out a little music! There are also a handful of family members
that help out during parties or big functions.

Hello Group!
I have a question for everyone regarding your Facility Newsletter:
If you could have your facility newsletter done professionally but
inexpensively, would you prefer to create it online? If so and once created
online, would you prefer to just get your artwork and do the printing yourself
(or at your local printer)? or have the online service provide you with the
finished newsletter?

Do you think any of the online newsletter providers give YOU what YOU'RE looking
for?

What type of newsletter do you do now? How many do you get? What do you pay? Are
you happy with it - or is it "just ok"? (I appreciate your honesty on all of
these!)
Would it benefit you if the entire process of putting a newsletter together was
made easier?
What would make it easier?

The company I work for specializes in Newsletters and Calendars for the health
care industry and will be launching our online newsletter creation site. I
really appreciate your input regarding how doing a newsletter can be easier for
you as well as your comments on what your administrator/executive director
expects from you with your facility newsletter.

I sincerely appreciate your feedback and look forward to your response.

Thanks again - Casey
