Serum zinc correlates with parent- and teacher- rated inattention in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
These findings add to accumulating evidence for a possible role of zinc in ADHD, even for middle-class Americans, and, for the first time, suggest a special relationship to inattentive symptoms. They do not establish either that zinc deficiency causes ADHD nor that ADHD should be treated with zinc.

ZINC DEFICIENCY, METAL METABOLISM, AND BEHAVIOR DISORDERS
The high incidence of zinc deficiency in assaultive young males was illustrated in a recent study1 which found elevated serum copper and depressed plasma zinc concentration, compared to normal controls. This study confirmed our clinical observations of zinc depletion in more than 4,000 behavior disordered patients.

Zinc supplements improve adolescents' mental performance
Dr. Penland and colleagues found that supplementation with 20 milligrams zinc per week led to greater memory and attention abilities than those demonstrated by children who did not receive zinc. Visual memory reaction time was lowered by 12 percent in those who received zinc compared to 6 percent in those who received no supplements. Word recognition and attention similarly improved in the group who received 20 milligrams.
