Children's diet link to disorders Study shows dramatic effect of fish oil supplement
Rigorous scientific research shows that the performance of underachieving children, some of whom were also disruptive, improved dramatically when their diets were supplemented with fish oils. The fish oils contain omega-3 fatty acids that are essential for brain development and function but are largely missing from modern processed diets.

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS and the BRAIN by Dianne Craft, MA
Several research projects in the past few years have brought our attention to the biological basis of these struggles, specifically a difficulty with fatty acid metabolism. They have highlighted the relationship between learning, behavior, and attention disorders and essential fatty acid deficiency in children.

Evening Primrose an omega-6 EFA
There has also been some interest in the use of evening primrose oil for people with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the evening primrose oil benefit was evident only in individuals with low zinc levels. Studies have demonstrated the ability of evening primrose oil to improve low zinc status, thus it is believed that the ADHD benefit is likely due to this effect.

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder
The reasons for the lower proportions of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) in these children are not clear; however, factors involving fatty acid intake, conversion of EFAs to LCPUFA products, and enhanced metabolism are discussed. The relation between LCPUFA status and the behavior problems that the children exhibited is also unclear. We are currently testing this relation in a double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention in a population of children with clinically diagnosed ADHD who exhibit symptoms of EFA deficiency.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Depression
There is plenty of research evidence that omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA, may alleviate depression in many people. Fish oil supplements are well tolerated, have almost no side effects, and are inexpensive. So far, we cannot recommend that you use fish oil to replace drug therapy, but it would be a good idea to add them to the therapy. You should see results in about 4 weeks, though the maximum benefit may not appear until nine months.

Oxford-Durham study: a randomized, controlled trial of dietary supplementation with fatty acids in children with developmen
Pediatrics, May, 2005 by Alexandra J. Richardson, Paul Montgomery -- Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for normal brain development and function and must be provided by the diet. However, their low levels in modern diets in developed countries are a known risk factor for physical disorders such as cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. Converging evidence indicates that fatty acid deficiencies or imbalances may also contribute to a range of adult psychiatric and neurologic disorders and to several common and overlapping childhood neurodevelopmental disorders, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia (specific reading difficulties), dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder [DCD]), and autistic spectrum disorders.

Results. No effect of treatment on motor skills was apparent, but significant improvements for active treatment versus placebo were found in reading, spelling, and behavior over 3 months of treatment in parallel groups. After the crossover, similar changes were seen in the placebo-active group, whereas children continuing with active treatment maintained or improved their progress.

Walnuts
walnuts contain an omega-3 called alpha linolenic acid (ALA). A high intake of ALA is protective against heart attack. Studies suggest that 2 grams of ALA--the amount in an ounce of walnuts--a day is sufficient to produce these benefits.

What are Essential Fatty Acids, anyway?
EFAs are involved with producing life energy in our bodies from food substances, and moving that energy throughout our systems. They govern growth, vitality, and mental state. They hook up oxygen, electron transport, and energy in the process of oxidation. EFAs play a part in almost every function of our body, far too many to list here.
