A Parent's Thoughts on the Martial Arts by Candi Matos
I never would have believed that martial arts could help my son, Christopher, who was diagnosed as having ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) at the age of five. So many people kept telling me that I was crazy to allow him to learn the concepts of kicking, punching and fighting. I thank my lucky stars every day, because I never let myself believe in their opinions. Chris has accomplished a lot in his life and the martial arts has helped him recognize and use his strengths.

Martial Arts for Kids
In addition, if your child has been diagnosed or is suspected of having an attention deficit disorder (ADD), you may way to consider a martial arts class. The martial arts provide an opportunity to strengthen all of your child's body - including the important one housed up in the skull. Using mind-body disciplines, martial arts seem to address the short attention spans of today's children, even those diagnosed with ADD.

A 3-month scientific research study was conducted and presented by Dr. Matthew Morand as his Doctor of Psychology dissertation at Hofstra University in New York. Taekwondo and Attention Deficit Disorder
Taekwondo and Karate are, in my experience, the most enjoyable sports for hyperactive children after soccer. Parents often do a double take when these sports are mentioned, fearing that a martial art will lead to serious social problems for their children because of their impulsiveness and aggressiveness. But to me, Taekwondo and Karate are two of the most therapeutic programs for children with this syndrome, and children can start as early as 4 or 5 years of age.
