CHADD - CIBA links - Transcript of Attention Deficit Disorder: A Dubious Diagnosis?
The PBS television series, The Merrow Report, produced in 1996 a program called "Attention Deficit Disorder: A Dubious Diagnosis?" The Educational Writer's Association awarded the program first prize for investigative reporting in that year. ---the Merrow Report (featured on Public Television) which revealed that Ciba-Geigy funded CHADD (Children with Attention Deficit Disorder) with $818,000 and that the U.S. Department of Education also funded CHADD with $750,000 to produce a video (Facing the Challenge of ADD) promoting Ritalin. The CHADD video was circulated throughout the U.S. educational system. The CHADD video devoted only 20 seconds to Ritalin's adverse effects. It included interviews of parents who were satisfied with the effects of Ritalin on their children, yet, amazingly, and not obviously, all of these interviewed parents were CHADD board members. This Merrow Report investigation was also the subject of a The New York Times article (10/20/95) by Walter Goodman, "Questioning Treatment For Attention Disorder". http://www.pbs.org/merrow/tv/transcripts/add.pdf |

CHADD-CIBA links - 1995 TV Show Links ADD Support Group, Drug Company
The show reports that since 1989 CHADD has received roughly $818,000 in "educational grants" from Ciba-Geigy. In interviews last week, officials of both Ciba-Geigy and CHADD said that such a relationship was not a conflict of interest and that they had never tried to hide their ties. The practice of drug companies financing projects by patient-support groups is a common one, they said, adding they had no plans to sever their relationship. CHADD officials said that an estimated 20 percent of the group's budget comes from grants from Ciba-Geigy and other companies that make Ritalin competitors. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ADHD_DrugFree/message/6114 |
