A Comparison of the Berard Auditory Training Approach with the Tomatis Audio-Psycho-Phonology Approach
Although this paper was written in 1991, we are not aware of any research studies, published in peer-reviewed journals, indicating that the Tomatis method is effective in treating autistic individuals. Additionally, Dr. Tomatis has not retracted his theory that autism is a psychological disorder, caused by the mother. In contrast, there are many studies showing that the Berard method is effective. http://www.autismwebsite.com/ari/treatment/tomatis.html |

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS: Auditory Integration Training and Facilitated Communication for Autism
This statement reviews the basis for two new therapies for autismauditory integration training and facilitative communication. Both therapies seek to improve communication skills. Currently available information does not support the claims of proponents that these treatments are efficacious. http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics%3b102/2/431 |

Auditory Integration Training
Some researchers feel that many children who are diagnosed with ADHD actually have a central auditory processing disorder. This condition is particularly common if the child has other sensory integration disorders, such as touch sensitivity. AIT seems to help improve attention span deficits, to correct poor auditory discrimination skills, and to improve the ability to follow directions, all of which are common problems in an ADD ADHD child. http://addadhdadvances.com/ait.html |

Auditory Integration Training Practitioners List
Following is a list of all those known to us (but not necessarily endorsed by us) who are said to offer Berard-type auditory integration training (AIT). Berard AIT has been shown, in a number of scientific studies, to be helpful to many autistic individuals. http://www.autismwebsite.com/ari-lists/aitus.html |

Autism Research Institute - Efficacy of Auditory Integration Training
AIT has been reported to be beneficial in several conditions, including AD/HD, autism, dyslexia, and hypersensitive hearing at certain frequencies. The present review covers 28 reports on AIT. Twenty-three reports concluded that AIT benefits various population subgroups, three studies claim to show no benefit (or no benefit over that seen in a control group), and two studies reported rather ambiguous or contradictory results.Considering the great difficulties in both providing a credible placebo treatment and assessing improvement in the subject populations, these results are quite encouraging. The balance of the evidence clearly favors AIT as a useful intervention, especially in autism. http://www.autismwebsite.com/ari/treatment/aitsummary.htm |

The Listening Center - Auditory Development Intervention (ADI)
The auditory stimulation is received by an individual in a series of blocks in which he or she listens to audiotapes. The sounds are modified trough an electronic device and received through highly refined headphones.
