Body Ecology Diet™ - Autism and ADHD
At Body Ecology our goal is to teach parents of autistic children to take the GF/CF diet to another level. The Body Ecology Diet was originally created to reverse fungal infections including candidiasis (present in children with autism), so it is a great start. Besides having no gluten or casein, it is also free of sugar and bad fats. Unlike other diets, ours primarily focuses on establishing the inner ecosystem deep within the intestines, then healing chronic and acute bowel dysbiosis, correcting the nutritional deficiencies, strengthening the adrenals and conquering the systemic infections. http://www.bodyecologydiet.com/autism.php |

Boy Behavior Leads to ADD Diagnoses
Inconsistent discipline, harsh discipline, verbal abuse and unrealistic expectations can result in oppositional behavior, especially in children who have personality types inspired by independence and freedom. It is important for parents to realize that oppositional behavior may be a perfectly rational response to hostile parenting or teaching. Too often oppositional behavior is viewed as some sort of biological defect that adults can do nothing about. http://www.borntoexplore.org/boys.htm |

CranioSacral Therapy and the Central Nervous System: Dr. John Upledger
we have done a great deal of work with autism and ADHD. I would say it’s most successful with hyperactivity, and the improvement can be very significant. Autistic children may also show improvement but the therapy has to be regularly applied until the child reaches full growth. With ADHD, once you make the necessary correction, it’s over—you don’t have to worry about it anymore. The correction, when appropriate, usually involves resolving a compression in the neck area (atlas occipital region) that occurs during the birth process. I estimate about 50% of individuals with ADHD fall into this category. http://www.latitudes.org/articles/cranio_upledger_adhd.html |

DYSCALCULIA SYNDROME: GIFTED & MATH LEARNING DISABLED
There are a great number of students who have serious difficulties in learning mathematics, but find the rest of academic subjects easy. These students have high IQs, are excellent readers and creative writers, and learn quickly. They are frustrated by a paradoxical condition. Superior performance is easily demonstrated in thinking, verbal, reading and writing skills, and in every subject where these skills are the predominant modes of learning and assessment. But when it comes to any subject that requires understanding and application of the language of mathematics, they fail miserably, to everyone's surprise. http://www.dyscalculia.org/Edu561.html |

EnteroLab
EnteroLab is a registered and fully accredited* clinical laboratory specializing in the analysis of intestinal specimens for food sensitivities (reactions by the immune system to common proteins in the diet) that cause a variety of symptoms and diseases. One particular area of our focus relates to intestinal conditions caused by immune reactivity to a protein called gluten which is found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Recent research in our laboratory indicates that immune sensitivity to gluten is exceedingly common, present in 30-40% of all Americans. Although these reactions can cause malnutrition, growth failure in children, osteoporosis, many autoimmune diseases (including colitis, diabetes, arthritis, and many others), most of the affected individuals are unaware they have it because there have been no sensitive tests capable of diagnosis. Similar sensitivity to yeast in the diet has been linked to the development of an inflammatory intestinal disease called Crohn's disease. http://www.enterolab.com/ |

Genetic Linkage of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder on Chromosome 16p13, in a Region Implicated in Autism
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder in childhood and likely represents an extreme of normal behavior. ADHD significantly impacts learning in school-age children and leads to impaired functioning throughout the life span. There is strong evidence for a genetic etiology of the disorder, although putative alleles, principally in dopamine-related pathways suggested by candidate-gene studies, have very small effect sizes. http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/AJHG/journal/issues/v71n4/024058/024058.html |

Herbal supplements: How they're labeled and regulated By Mayo Clinic staff
In 1994, Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). This act limited the FDA's control over products labeled a "dietary supplement." The DSHEA states that manufacturers don't have to prove the safety or efficacy of a product before they put it on the market. http://www.mayoclinic.com/invoke.cfm?objectid=AA08B116-819D-4B5A-B1762D54761490D9 |

Landau-Kleffner Syndrome Information Page
Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS) is a rare, childhood neurological disorder characterized by the sudden or gradual development of aphasia (the inability to understand or express language) and an abnormal electro-encephalogram (EEG). LKS affects the parts of the brain that control comprehension and speech. The disorder usually occurs in children between the ages of 5 and 7 years. Typically, children with LKS develop normally but then lose their language skills for no apparent reason. http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/landaukleffnersyndrome/landaukleffnersyndrome.htm |

Manganese and Hyperactive Behaviors: Pilot Study of School-Age Children Exposed through Tap Water
The findings of this pilot study indicate that exposure to high levels of Mn in tap water is associated with elevated MnH levels in children, and MnH is significantly associated with increased levels of hyperactive and oppositional behaviors in the classroom. The findings suggest a continuum in the relation between MnH and hyperactive behaviors in the classroom, with all children presenting elevated levels on certain scales having MnH levels above the normal range. http://www.ehponline.org/members/2006/9504/9504.html |

Symptom Charting
People familiar with bipolar disorder are probably also familiar with the term “mood chart”. It is understood in most bipolar communities that charting mood and other factors leads to a better understanding of one’s particular brand of bipolar disorder and what affects their illness. But other disorders can benefit from symptom charting. ADHD parents are very familiar with sticker charts, behavior charts and point systems which have been shown helpful in reducing unwanted ADHD symptoms and the behaviors that result. Charting frequency of impulsivity, distractibility, lack of attention, energy level and depression can aid parents of ADHD children in making discipline and other parenting decisions. Tracking obsessions and the behaviors that result can help those with OCD become more cognitively aware of the frequency and severity of their symptoms. Charting social difficulties (and successes, too) of children with autism and NVLD can aid parents and teachers in developing strategies to teach the child more appropriate communication skills. In fact, there is probably no chronic brain condition that could not benefit from daily monitoring or charting. http://www.gcbf.org/information/article3.html |

The Toxic Metal connection to ADD, Aggressiveness, Impulsivity, Violence, Delinquency, Criminality, and Mass murderers/Serial k
Large numbers of peer-reviewed studies have found that the majority of such developmental neurological disorders such as ADD, dyslexia, autism, schizophrenia, other mood disorders, and learning disabilities are primarily caused by prenatal and neonatal exposures to toxic metals or other toxics. Common exposures have been documented for mercury(vaccines, amalgam fillings, fish), lead(paint, soil, water fixtures), arsenic(treated wood, pesticides, shellfish, other foods), aluminum(processed food, pans), cadmium(shellfish, paint, piping), antimony(Scotch guard), manganese(soy milk, welding, metal works). All of these are documented to be extremely neurotoxic. http://www.home.earthlink.net/~berniew1/violence.html |

Touch-pressure technique - Brush Therapy
The touch-pressure technique is a specific protocol used to decrease tactile defensiveness and to promote normal sensory organization. This technique, when applied correctly, gives the nervous system a chance to organize itself. This input may help decrease avoidance behaviors and irritability. It may also help increase ability to engage in activities such as exploring, touching and manipulating objects. It may promote normal sleep/wake patterns, attention to environment and social interactions. http://preemiemum.com/touchpressure_technique_.htm |

Use of Acupressure Magnetic Pellets in the Treatment of ADHD
In traditional acupuncture texts gold is described as "tonifying" and silver is described as "sedating". Our premise in using gold pellets was that severely hyperactive, inattentive children had an underlying deficiency with "empty fire" symptoms. Some of the children may respond better to silver pellets. Future studies of a crossover design may actually document claims made about gold and silver needles in the ancient texts http://www.1hpi.com/hpp18/paper-11.html |

Use of acupressure beads in the treatment of ADHD
We have used a type of acupressure bead (called "ear magnet seeds" in Chinese), to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children (Clin Acu Orient Med 1:31-2, 2000). The bead, a round metallic object coated with gold, is taped to the posterior surface of the ear just opposite the Shenmen location on the anterior surface. There is often a clear sensation of Qi when this bead is applied. One can frequently observe distended veins, moderate erythemia, and poor skin tone at this location, suggesting a need for tonification treatment. The beads do not need to be pressed or manipulated. Treatment is more-or-less continuous for the duration of the patient’s problem. http://www.akupunktur-aktuell.de/fb0126_1.htm |
