Greetings Everyone! My name is Amanda Sharp. I am in my final year of
physical therapy school. I am very interested in ADHD and the
spectrum of learning disabilities. I am learning as much as I can
about them and am interested in learning what the needs of the
children and parents are as they state them. I have worked with
children with such disorders and have learned the most from my
interactions with them. I plan to create a practice specifically for
children and adolescenets with ADHD and learning disabilities. Your
experiences and needs will help me to create what is needed the most.

For my thesis, i am administering a gross motor development test to
boys who are 5, 6, and 7 years old who have been diagnoses with ADHD
and have not yet received stimulant medication as part of their
treatment. I am interested in determining whether or not a difference
exists in the gross motor skills of boys with ADHD and boys without.
The gross motor skills that will be tested include, running, hopping,
galloping, leaping, jumping, sliding, batting off a tee, dribbling,
catching, kicking, throwing, and rolling a ball. The test takes 15-30
minutes to administer depending on the individual needs of each
child. There is no follow-up required and results will be mailed to
you upon your request. I am administering the test to children in
central Arizona, northern Arizona, northern Utah, and southern Idaho.

Tomorrow's guests are waging a battle against their schools, saying
they went too far when they suggested that they medicate their
children with psychotropic drugs. Many opponents, who believe its
diagnosis is based on a list of highly subjective questions, deny the
existence of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Even so, a whopping 6%
of elementary and middle school students take psychotropic drugs to
control ADD, even though the long term effects of the medications are
unknown.

Vicky put her 10 year-old daughter Shaina on a psychotropic drug
after receiving a letter from the school psychologist stating that
her daughter should be evaluated for ADD. Shaina died after a toxic
level of the drug built up in her system. Patricia and Al refused to
listen to their school when they suggested their son take a drug.
They are currently in litigation with the school, who they say
accused them of abuse for not medicating their child.

Actress Juliette Lewis is against drugging children with ADD, she'll
share her point-of-view. You'll also hear from Representative Lenny
Winkler of Connecticut who passed legislation in 2001 prohibiting
teachers from making recommendations that children be placed on

Hi All,

I am new to the group & would like to introduce myself. I am the
Mother of an 11-year-old boy who has ADD. Although he is a bright boy
& has attended school since he was age 3, his behavior problems have

Heard at a Biometics presentation...A forty year old gentleman was
diagnosed with ADD only one year ago. All of his life he was very
antisocial in school and felt like a complete failure, but never

Christopher was diagnosed with ADHD and Intermittent Explosive
Disorder (IED) over a year ago, when he just turned 8. For those
unfamiliar with IED, it is a disorder that causes intermittent,
explosive anger. For example, Christopher could be working on his
homework quietly and then the next minute (with out warning) he
would start screaming, yelling and throwing everything that was
close to him. Of course, this is a mild example. Nevertheless, I
could go on telling plenty of horror stories that brings the true
meaning of IED. In the past when he got angry he has separated his
bedroom door frame from the wall, kicked and punched holes in walls,
thrown dining room chairs at me or his brother, bite, kick and claw
me, threatened me with knives, well I think you get the point. The
episodes could last from 1-2 hours. The only thing I could do to
protect the family from him was to place him in a basket hold
(placing him prone on the floor and sitting above him holding him
down). The part the really scared me was after he was able to come
down from these 'highs', within minutes he would go from anger to
passing out on the floor. In many cases, Christopher will not even
remember what he did. Before starting him on the Biometics, I met
with his psychiatrist. She had agreed that the medication he was
taking obviously was not working. My options were to increase his
dosage or find an even stronger drug. Both of us were concerned with
these options too. Christopher had been very sensitive to the meds.
We were constantly battling to keep weight on him; his face had lost
all color, and had very dark circles and bags under his eyes. If he
missed the medication, he would vomit (almost acted as if he had the
flu). Anyway, with his therapist's permission we weaned him off the
medication (both Paxil and Adderall) and 'built' him up on the
Biometics. The last five weeks have been the most incredible and
highly emotional time for our family. I honestly did not notice many
behavioral changes at first. The first and second day however, the
changes he exhibited were physical. He started getting color back in
his face and the dark circles started to disappear. By the third

him to go to school. Christopher then got that look in his eye. The
look I knew to well. I was waiting and bracing myself for the war to

was dumbfounded and did not know what to do. So I went after him. He
came to me with tears in his eyes and sat with me outside (in front
of all of his friends). We held each other and talked. With
Christopher's head against my chest, he told me he loved me. I then
asked him if he was embarrassed, he could go be with his friends. He
looked up to me and said "No mom.I want to be with you." I cried
that day.and that night. Five weeks later Christopher still has not
attacked me. Instead when he gets upset we sit down and talk, this
would never have been possible with the 'old Christopher'. According
to his teacher, although there are some lingering issues, he has not
confronted or threatened her either in the last five weeks. I am so
excited and very amazed that Biometics could help my son lead a
normal and healthy life. My son is so excited with his results too;
that he tells everybody he possibly can about how he now feels.

My name is Kelly and I live across the street from Christopher. I
have noticed a big change in the way Christopher looks and how he
acts since Deana has taken him off of his prescription medications
and put him on the vitamins. He was looking so sick all the time on
the prescription medication. He was losing weight and looked like he
never slept, he had bags under his eyes all the time. He also seems
to be more in control of his actions now too. He is much more
respectful and loving. I don't hear him screaming at his mother and
brother anymore. I find it amazing the differences I have seen in
Christopher in the short time he has been off of the prescription
medication and on the vitamins instead. It took longer for the
prescription medications to modify his behavior and they didn't work

Hello. Several people have called or e-mailed lately to ask for my
son's (Justin) testimony. Here it is:
Justin was 10 1/2 years old when he began taking Biometics (NE6
program/adult serving size). At the time he was on Ritalin and had
been for 5 1/2 years. He had frequent migraines, occasional tummy
aches, and sinus/allergies. He also had developed "tics" (shaking
his head, and blinking his eyes). I started him on Biometics, to

Ritalin May Cause Brain Change in Children

The stimulant Ritalin, a drug used to help children with attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder, may cause long-term changes in the
brain, researchers reported yesterday.

The changes look similar to those seen with other stimulants such as
amphetamine and cocaine, at least in rats, the team at the
University of Buffalo found.

"Clinicians consider Ritalin to be short-acting," Joan Baizer, a
professor of physiology and biophysics who led the study, said in a
statement.

"When the active dose has worked its way through the system, they
consider it 'all gone.' Our research with gene expression in an
animal model suggests that it has the potential for causing long-
lasting changes in brain cell structure and function."

But Baizer said that Ritalin, known generically as methylphenidate,
probably is not addictive in the way drugs of abuse are if it is
used properly.

"Children have been given Ritalin daily for many years, and it is
extremely effective and beneficial, but it's not quite as simple as
a short-acting drug," she said. "We need to look at it more closely."

High doses of amphetamine and cocaine have been found to switch on
genes known as "immediate early genes" in brain cells. One of the
genes, called c-fos, has been linked with addiction when it is
activated in certain parts of the brain.

The researchers gave rat pups sweetened milk carrying
methylphenidate in comparable doses and at similar times to what a
child would get. C-fos genes were activated in their brains in a
pattern similar to that seen in cocaine and amphetamine use, the
researchers told a meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in San
Diego.

Christopher was diagnosed with ADHD and Intermittent Explosive

unfamiliar with IED, it is a disorder that causes intermittent,
explosive anger. For example, Christopher could be working on his
homework quietly and then the next minute (with out warning) he
would start screaming, yelling and throwing everything that was
close to him. Of course, this is a mild example. Nevertheless, I
could go on telling plenty of horror stories that brings the true
meaning of IED. In the past when he got angry he has separated his
bedroom door frame from the wall, kicked and punched holes in walls,
thrown dining room chairs at me or his brother, bite, kick and claw
me, threatened me with knives, well I think you get the point. The
episodes could last from 1-2 hours. The only thing I could do to
protect the family from him was to place him in a basket hold
(placing him prone on the floor and sitting above him holding him
down). The part the really scared me was after he was able to come
down from these 'highs', within minutes he would go from anger to
passing out on the floor. In many cases, Christopher will not even
remember what he did. Before starting him on the Biometics, I met
with his psychiatrist. She had agreed that the medication he was
taking obviously was not working. My options were to increase his
dosage or find an even stronger drug. Both of us were concerned with
these options too. Christopher had been very sensitive to the meds.
We were constantly battling to keep weight on him; his face had lost

Hello. Several people have called or e-mailed lately to ask for my
son's (Justin) testimony. Here it is:
Justin was 10 1/2 years old when he began taking Biometics (NE6
program/adult serving size). At the time he was on Ritalin and had
been for 5 1/2 years. He had frequent migraines, occasional tummy
aches, and sinus/allergies. He also had developed "tics" (shaking

Christopher was diagnosed with ADHD and Intermittent Explosive
Disorder (IED) over a year ago, when he just turned 8. For those
unfamiliar with IED, it is a disorder that causes intermittent,
explosive anger. For example, Christopher could be working on his
homework quietly and then the next minute (with out warning) he
would start screaming, yelling and throwing everything that was
close to him. Of course, this is a mild example. Nevertheless, I
could go on telling plenty of horror stories that brings the true
meaning of IED. In the past when he got angry he has separated his
bedroom door frame from the wall, kicked and punched holes in walls,
thrown dining room chairs at me or his brother, bite, kick and claw
me, threatened me with knives, well I think you get the point. The
episodes could last from 1-2 hours. The only thing I could do to
protect the family from him was to place him in a basket hold
(placing him prone on the floor and sitting above him holding him
down). The part the really scared me was after he was able to come
down from these 'highs', within minutes he would go from anger to
passing out on the floor. In many cases, Christopher will not even
remember what he did. Before starting him on the Biometics, I met
with his psychiatrist. She had agreed that the medication he was
taking obviously was not working. My options were to increase his
dosage or find an even stronger drug. Both of us were concerned with
these options too. Christopher had been very sensitive to the meds.
We were constantly battling to keep weight on him; his face had lost
all color, and had very dark circles and bags under his eyes. If he
missed the medication, he would vomit (almost acted as if he had the
flu). Anyway, with his therapist's permission we weaned him off the
medication (both Paxil and Adderall) and 'built' him up on the
Biometics. The last five weeks have been the most incredible and
highly emotional time for our family. I honestly did not notice many
behavioral changes at first. The first and second day however, the
changes he exhibited were physical. He started getting color back in
his face and the dark circles started to disappear. By the third
day, well, that is where our new family life began. On that early
morning things seemed to be going well, until it was about time for
him to go to school. Christopher then got that look in his eye. The
look I knew to well. I was waiting and bracing myself for the war to
begin. However, for the very first time, Christopher took a deep
breath. He PICKED up his schoolbooks and WALKED out of the house. I
was dumbfounded and did not know what to do. So I went after him. He
came to me with tears in his eyes and sat with me outside (in front
of all of his friends). We held each other and talked. With
Christopher's head against my chest, he told me he loved me. I then
asked him if he was embarrassed, he could go be with his friends. He
looked up to me and said "No mom.I want to be with you." I cried
that day.and that night. Five weeks later Christopher still has not
attacked me. Instead when he gets upset we sit down and talk, this
would never have been possible with the 'old Christopher'. According
to his teacher, although there are some lingering issues, he has not
confronted or threatened her either in the last five weeks. I am so
excited and very amazed that Biometics could help my son lead a
normal and healthy life. My son is so excited with his results too;
that he tells everybody he possibly can about how he now feels.

P.S. My neighbor Kelly (to whom I always went to for moral support
when Christopher was out of control), Commented that she has not
heard from me lately and asked what I was doing different. She said
he seemed so much better behaved now. After telling her the story,
here are her observations in her own words.

My name is Kelly and I live across the street from Christopher. I
have noticed a big change in the way Christopher looks and how he
acts since Deana has taken him off of his prescription medications
and put him on the vitamins. He was looking so sick all the time on
the prescription medication. He was losing weight and looked like he
never slept, he had bags under his eyes all the time. He also seems
to be more in control of his actions now too. He is much more
respectful and loving. I don't hear him screaming at his mother and
brother anymore. I find it amazing the differences I have seen in
Christopher in the short time he has been off of the prescription
medication and on the vitamins instead. It took longer for the
prescription medications to modify his behavior and they didn't work
as well as the vitamins have worked. - Kelly

Hello. Several people have called or e-mailed lately to ask for my
son's (Justin) testimony. Here it is:
Justin was 10 1/2 years old when he began taking Biometics (NE6
program/adult serving size). At the time he was on Ritalin and had
been for 5 1/2 years. He had frequent migraines, occasional tummy
aches, and sinus/allergies. He also had developed "tics" (shaking
his head, and blinking his eyes). I started him on Biometics, to
give him the nutrition his body needed, because the medication
curbed his appetite so much (he only ate breakfast and normally
threw his lunch away and then "picked" at his dinner). The third
morning when he woke up, he seemed much calmer and happier. I didn't
have to tell him 2-3 times to get his things ready, or to make his
bed, like I normally did. I knew at that moment, something was
working on him. I referred to him as a Perfect Child. During this
first month trial period, I kept him on his full dosage of Ritalin.
He would complain about having to wait 30 minutes to eat, but I was
very firm, and told him he was going to take Biometics for 30 days,
so he could either complain and be miserable or just take it and get
on with his day. Eventually, if he complained, I'd give him a
choice, Ritalin or Vitamin. He always grabbed the vitamin cocktail
and gulped it down. To this day, you could not force this child to
take another Ritalin tablet! The second month on product, we
decreased his Ritalin in half and then increased the GGN Plus. At
the end of the second month, we cut the Ritalin out completely. He
has been medication free for almost 3 years now. His doctor has even
referred other parents looking for alternative treatments to us.
He's gaining weight, he's much happier and he has only gone to the
doctor once for a yearly physical Justin also has a learning
disability. His grades have consistently improved each year. If he
works really hard and continues doing well this year, I believe he
will "test out" of his language resource class. Last year and the
year before, I even had 2 teachers tell me they had no idea Justin
was ADD. After all the years of feeling helpless dealing with ADD, I
could have cried for joy! Justin is a firm believer in Biometics and
doesn't hesitate telling others about what it's done for him. -

Our son is also ADHD. He was on meds (ritalin and Adderall) for several
years. We tried different doses, etc...and going without meds. He had
horrible side effects with both meds that would disappear when we stopped the
meds, but his attention issues would get worse.
We started him on vitamins and other supplements very early this year. He no
longer suffers from any of the side effects that he experienced with meds,
but his attention, on task abilities, and ability to stay focused and work
independently and quietly have improved greatly.

Ritalin is More Potent Than Cocaine

The children's drug Ritalin has a more potent effect on the brain than
cocaine.

Using brain imaging, scientists have found that, in pill form, Ritalin -
taken by thousands of British children and four million in the United
States - occupies more of the neural transporters responsible for the
'high' experienced by addicts than smoked or injected cocaine. The research
may alarm parents whose children have been prescribed Ritalin as a solution
to Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder.

The study was commissioned to understand more about why Ritalin - which has
the same pharmacological profile as cocaine - is effective in calming
children and helping them concentrate, while cocaine produces an intense
'high' and is powerfully addictive.

In oral form, Ritalin did not induce this intense psychological 'hit'. But
Dr Nora Volkow, psychiatrist and imaging expert at Brookhaven National
Laboratory, in Upton, New York, who led the study, said that injected into
the veins as a liquid rather than taken as a pill, it produced a rush that
'addicts like very much'.

Interviewed in last week's Journal of the American Medical Association
newsletter, she said: 'They say it's like cocaine.'

Even in pill form, Ritalin blocked far more of the brain transporters that
affect mood change and had a greater potency in the brain than cocaine.
Researchers were shocked by this finding.

A normal dose administered to children blocked 70 per cent of the dopamine
transporters. 'The data clearly show the notion that Ritalin is a weak
stimulant is completely incorrect,' said Volkow. Cocaine is known to block
around 50 per cent of these transporters, leaving a surfeit of dopamine in
the system, which is responsible for the hit addicts crave.

But now it is known that Ritalin blocks 20 percent more of these
auto-receptors.

'I've been almost obsessed about trying to understand [Ritalin] with
imaging,' said Volkow. 'As a psychiatrist I sometimes feel embarrassed
[about the lack of knowledge] because this is by far the drug we prescribe
most frequently to children.'

However, it was still not clear why a drug that has been administered for
more than 40 years was not producing an army of addicted schoolchildren.
Volkow and her team concluded that this was due to the much slower process
of oral ingestion.

It takes around an hour for Ritalin in pill form to raise dopamine levels
in the brain. Smoked or injected, cocaine does this in seconds.

Dr. Joanna Fowler, who worked with Volkow on the project, said: 'All drugs
that are abused by humans release large quantities of dopamine. But
dopamine is also necessary for people to be able to pay attention and
filter out other distractions.'

But opponents of Ritalin, labeled a 'wonder drug' and a 'chemical cosh',
believe it may be addictive and has dangerous side-effects. Moreover, many
believe ADHD is a fraudulent title for a non-existent condition once put
down to the exuberance of youth.

Professor Steve Baldwin, a child psychologist from Teesside University, who
died this year in the Selby rail crash, campaigned against Ritalin. He
pointed out similarities between the drug and amphetamines as well as cocaine.

Mandy Smith of Banff in Scotland has a son of eight who was prescribed
Ritalin for nine months. 'I am astonished the British Government have
allowed this drug to be prescribed,' she said. 'It can destroy people's
lives. My son was a changed person when he took Ritalin. He was suicidal
and depressed.'

Janice Hill, of the Overload Support Network, a charity for parents of
children with behavioral problems, said: 'Now we have thousands of children
in Scotland taking a drug that is more potent than cocaine. What does it
take before the situation is thoroughly investigated?'

A majority of children with ADHD can be helped through the eating plan and
nutritional optimization. Diet and children's behavior has been linked for

   Hi, my daughter has Tourette Syndrome/Motor Tic Syndrome.  She's almost 17
now and was diagnosed when she was about 11.  She's had "tics" since she was
about 8 or 9 and we never thought too much of it until it started getting
worse and interfering with her ability to do things.

    Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder......I'm not real sure what
causes it but in the case of my daughter she responded well to a couple of
nutritional supplements.

    She's been off all her medication for about 4
years now.....She has even pretty much stopped taking her supplements at
this point..   Oddly enough her "tics" (hard to control, quick, repetitive,
movements, affecting any part of the body) have not worsened.

   I hold my
breath every day...fearful that they will come back in "full force".  My
daughter thinks that maybe she's outgrown it, which I suppose is possible,
except....she does still exhibit some tics, not very severe ones, but "tics"
none the less.

     Try not to worry about it, there are medications which can help and if
you seem overly concerned about this diagnosis it's bound to make him
stressed out about it, which could make his symptoms more pronounced.

ADHD Testimonial:  a little background - a true story - about mild
ADHD - Inattentive type - including Central Auditory Processing
Disorder (CAPD) by Charles T. Wild

Ever heard of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
syndrome? It's gone through a large number of name changes over the
last fifty years. Previous terms have included: ADD, Hyperactivity,
Hyperkinesis, MBDysfunction, and Minimal Brain Damage. There are
several types of ADHD and I have the rarest: it's called ADHD -
Inattentive type predominantly. With me, there is little or no
impulsivity or hyperactivity present which is part of the other types
of ADHD. The symptoms which I experienced were a high level of
involuntary distractibility, a subtle hearing challenge/communication
challenge called CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder), and a
very short attention span (measureable in seconds). ADHD can be
severe, moderate, or mild. Mine is mild. I am one of those persons
who responds extremely well to the right alerting agent which works
quite well for limited periods of time (like about 4 hours or less
and the second dose does not work as well as the first). For me an
FDA approved alerting agent, a special caffeine compound made by
Bristol-Myers (NoDoz, 100 mg caffeine, St. Louis, MO type only) works
better than Ritalin, a factual observation which surprised my doctor,
Anita Uhl Brothers, M.D., of Berkeley, California, who allowed me to
better understand how in some people, an underaroused central nervous
system present from birth can be temporarily boosted and mended with
the right ADHD medicine, most often a central nervous system
stimulant of some kind. One of my favorite movies is "Awakenings"
with Robin Williams, based on a true story and the book by Oliver
Sacks, M.D. In the movie "Awakenings" it shows a very dramatic short
term response to a medicine which allowed people with severe motor
difficulties to move a lot better for short periods of time like
about 30 days or less when tolerance developed to the medicine and
the medicine no longer was effective. I tend to live with that type
of response, the medicine can relieve the ADHD symptoms for a few
hours a day but not for the entire day. In some ways I am very lucky
because there is a small group of those with ADHD where the medicines
only work for about 1 hour. The ADHD medicine for me temporarily
improves my fine motor control, especially on the left side of my
body, apparently by changing the level of neurotransmitters involved
with human movement including the chemical messenger dopamine. The
reticular formation of the brain stem governs the level of attention
and is a factor in some cases of ADHD/Attention Deficit.
Oversimplified a little yet still in the ballpark, the underlying
cause of ADHD is believed to be a spotty neuron. Good nutrition helps
a little so I believe in the idea of a fresh, whole foods, additive-
free approach to daily nutrition; however, bottomline, the only thing
that really helped me was finding the right ADHD medicine which for
me contained the alerting agent, caffeine. I was born in 1946 but it
was only in 1978 when all the puzzle pieces tended to come together
and I could understand what ADHD was and what it really wasn't. The
credit goes to Dr. Brothers, M.D., of Berkeley, California, the first
doctor who had the background needed to provide some of the answers,
remedies, and solutions needed for me to understand and deal with
ADHD a little better. That's my view.

I am a new member to this group.  I joined to learn as much as I can
regarding ADHD and special ed serivces at school.

I have noticed a lot of posts regarding meds and other related
problems.  Our 14 year old son has AHDH & dyslexia.  We had him on
ritalin for a bit, then nothing, then tried addreall last summer.  We
recently took him off adderall after learning of all the side
effects, etc...

I recently started using nutritional supplements from Omnitrition for
allergies, heartburn, energy, and weight management.  After starting
the products, I learned that many families have started using the
products and have successfully gotten their kids(and for some,
themselves) off of prescription meds for allergies, sleep disorders,
depression and espicially ADHD/ADD.

These products are wonderful.  I personally don't suffer from any of
my allergies (hay fever, dust, mold, animals), no longer have
heartburn, lost 18 lbs in 6 weeks and have more energy than ever
before.  Since I had had such succcess, we have started our son on
the products use as a med alternative for ADHD.  He is on task now,
(even turns in his homework rather than losing it!!)and is doing so
much better than he ever did on the prescription meds.  We have not
told anyone at the school, they think his results are due to the
adderall.

If anyone is interested in trying these products as a safe
alternative to prescription meds, please let me know, I'd be more
than happy to help you out.

Our boy of 7 had cranial manipulation done by an osteopath.  I'm not
sure if the chiropractors do the same thing.  Here in the UK I think
the osteopaths have to have about four years' training and pass
exams.  This one we saw was recommended to us.  He just seemed to
massage our son's head and realign the neck. It took about five
sessions to see him really improve.

Apparently, the osteopath had seen improvements in the language of a
couple of autistic children as well.

I know they can do the cranial stuff on adults.  I'm not sure if it
works as well as the kids though.

I'm new to this group.  We have three children, a son-15 (no LD's),
another son-14 (ADHD/Dyslexia) and a daughter-3 1/2 (no LD's/ADHD
noted yet).

We have battled the school district for years regarding the special
ed needs of our 14 year old.  He was finally diagnosed in the 2nd
grade with ADHD.  We started Ritalin and had to keep changing doses,
times given, etc...We tried natural supplements that didn't seem to
work so we went back to the Ritilin.  We took him off when he was
ending the 3rd grade because he experienced some mild side effects,
but we weren't seeing any significant difference with his attention
or performance in school.

In 1998, he had his 3 year re-eval, and they informed us that we
would have to medicate him again if we wanted to have him continue
with special ed services. He did qualify to continue receiving
services as Learning Disabled.  We did notice that his attention
problems were interferring with his ability to learn, and adding to
his LD problems.  The district insisted that we medicate him again
(blaming his lack of progress only on his not being medicated).

Against our wishes, we tried Ritalin again, and then switched to
Adderall in August 2000.  We did this to show the district that he
had problems even when medicated.

A few months ago, a friend introduced me to Omnitrition (health,
fitness, & weight loss) I tried the products for weight loss &
energy, and to my amazement, they worked very well.  I met a lady
who's son had been on Ritalin & Dexadrine for at least 5 years with
every possible side effect you could have.  After she took her son
off his meds and started the Omnitrition products, he no longer
experienced any of the side effects with the regular meds, and grew
several inches after he quit taking them.  He has been completely off
of every prescription med for ADD/ADHD for 2 years now.  He is also
doing even better than he did on the regular meds.

We started using the Omnitrition products for our son.  He is able to
concentrate much better and actually met most of his goals on his IEP
regarding study skills and on task abilities.  He will continue with
two of his organizational goals, but is showing improvement in this
area as well.

But, I still needed to a job to maintain our standard
of living.  As a car sales person the easiest thing
for me was to sell something.  Hubby works nights
making all the demo parties impossible.  This I could
do from home.  So it began.

At first I did not believe the claims they made.  Then
as my son's health became problematic aside from just
the ADHD he had symtoms of Tourette's and a rash for 3
years that would not quit, asthma and all kinds of
other stuff.  Then for laughs I decided that I would
try the exact products I was touting.  For him I took
him off all his meds and changed his soaps, shampoo,
bubble baths, laundry detergent.  Lo and behold the
rash went away in 1 week.  Then I started him on
vitamins, once again his teacher called and said "hey
who is the new kid".  I was in shock.

Now the true test was could it take away my pain.  I
now have had a car accident because the meds I take
leave me too disconected.  I started on thier vitamins
and also cleared out all the chemical cleaners from my
home.  I take my vitamins everyday and try to
excercise 3 times a week (this is easy w/a 10 year
old) and I feel better than I ever have in my whole
life.  No more wake up in the morning w/a med
hangover, or feeling disconected.

Hope this will restore some faith for all of you.  If
I can help let me know.  I have tons of info to share.

It really does seem criminal that such huge percentages of US
children are on a
controlled narcotic. How can this possibly be the answer to the
problem.
I have helped hundreds, if not thousands of children dramatically
improve if
not totally resolve their ADHD with the use of the diet I advocate.
Lower the
sugar and grains and removing all fluids but water seems to be the
key here.

Hew York City Schools Diet Study

A very revealing dietary study led to changes in the breakfasts and lunches
eaten daily by over 800,000 children at the 803 schools in the New York
City public schools from 1979 to 1983. (6) The amounts of sugar, synthetic
food colorings, synthetic flavors, and preservatives were reduced in the
meals served throughout the city school system.

Tracking back for a number of years before the study, the researchers found
that the academic test scores for the New York City schools never varied
more than 1 percent. The dietary changes, which were instituted gradually
over the four-year period, enabled the New York City public schools to
register an astounding 15.7-percent increase in the mean academic ranking,
measured against the rest of the nation's schools.

Another interesting and very important correlation revealed by this study
is that, before the dietary improvements were made, the schools where
students ate the most cafeteria-prepared meals had the lowest overall
academic performance within the New York City school system. After the
dietary revisions, this situation was reversed. The schools where students
ate the most cafeteria-prepared meals that were healthy had the highest
academic scores.

Another study, published in the January \9SS Lancet, showed that a
one-a-day vitamin pill taken throughout the school year by a group of
twelve- and thirteen-year-old British
schoolchildren produced increases in IQ scores. (1)

Studies like these indicate that most Americans are not getting the
nourishment they need from the standard American diet, the SAD diet.

I am new to this group. I am a stay at home mother. I have five children, three
of my own and two stepdaughters that are here part time.  My oldest son, age 15,
has adhd. We are trying to learn all that we can about his condition so that we
are in the best position to help him.  Have found that talking with other
parents is the best way to learn.  We also started our own web site for parents
raising children with ADD/ADHD and have learned alot, but have mostly learned
that there is so much more to learn.

- My daughter is 12 as of yesterday, where does the time go? Anyway, we've
been on these products since July of 97' the Deluxe Nutritional Program is
what we use, and then when Bio Alert came out I added that as well to her
morning routine. I recommend playing with the get-go-n to find which amount
works best for each child. Venessa has 3 scoops in the morning, one at
lunch in a thermos with juice before she eats her lunch, then one to help
her through her homework at 4:00 when she gets home from school. On
weekends only one scoop in the afternoon is needed. We gradually found this
combination for her to work, with my friends I suggest 2 scoops in the
morning, then see if they notice or teacher notices afternoons being harder

- Hi, Tracy here. I give my ADD daughter (age 6) 1/2 servings of Bio Fuel

The End to Addictions - Issue # 7

Dr. Jay M. Holder shows why chiropractic, acupuncture, and amino acids may
be the groundbreaking answer to the leading cause of death in America. His
bold new multifactorial approach has a high success rate and is cost
effective. It could spell the end to addictions-to alcohol, cocaine,
heroin, nicotine, gambling, attention deficit disorders in adults and
children-in a generation.

In the first days of its second century, chiropractic may have a bold,
effective, and inexpensive solution to the alarming problem of addictions.
An estimated 20% of the U.S. population suffers from some form of addiction
and over 80% of all crime is traceable to addictions or substance abuse.
Even more shocking, evidence supports the conclusion that addiction, which
most physicians now regard as a disease, is the leading cause of death in
America, accounting for 69% of drownings, 68% of manslaughters, 49% of
murders, 50% of all traffic fatalities, and 35% of all suicides. Add to
this, deaths from drug overdose and related substance abuse complications,
and you have a health problem of staggering proportions.


Emerging in the face of these grim statistics is the completely surprising
revelation that the solution to this proliferation of addictions may be in
our own therapeutic backyard. According to Jay M. Holder, D.C., M.D.,
Ph.D., a Miami chiropractor-physician and one of the prime movers in the
50,000 member-strong chiropractic profession, this 100-year-old primary
health care profession may hold the answer to addictions literally in its
hands. Chiropractic, after all, means "done with the hands," and if the
rest of the profession grabs hold of Dr. Holder's theories and innovations,
chiropractic may start to make a profound difference in turning around our
most serious health problem in ways that nobody ever thought it could.


Dr. Holder is no ordinary chiropractor. In 1991, he was the first American
physician to receive the Albert Schweitzer Prize in Medicine, the
profession's most prestigious award, to the acclaim of doctors from 70
nations. That year he also was named Chiropractor of the Year by the
Florida Chiropractic Association. Dr. Holder received Florida's first state
grant to study the use of acupuncture to treat chemical dependency. In
1992, the State of Florida House of Representatives awarded Dr. Holder an
official commendation for his medical excellence in addiction treatment.


In practice for 20 years, Dr. Holder directs two chiropractic clinics, in
Miami and Miami Beach, Florida, including the 300-bed Exodus Addiction
Treatment Center. He directs the Holder Research Institute which invents
medical devices, formulas, and educational programs; he runs the American
College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders which trains and board
certifies professionals to work as addictionologists; and he travels,
lectures, and teaches constantly.


Not only is he phenomenally busy, but Dr. Holder is getting unheard-of
clinical results in treating addictions. In 1993, the U.S. Senate,
reviewing Dr. Holder's success rates, said: "In the realm of
addictionology, these figures compare with Michael Jordan's performance in
basketball."


So if a physician with this caliber of credentials says chiropractic, as
the leading component of a 5 part addiction treatment program, can help
addictions, we're well advised to give him an ear-both ears. Here is a
typical case that shows how Holder reverses addictions.


Johnny, age 26, came to Dr. Holder depressed, very sick, displaying
psychotic behavior, and strung out on alcohol and cocaine. He'd already
seen four psychiatrists who had given him different mood-altering drugs,
but they only made him worse. He'd started two addiction treatment
programs, but finished neither. Johnny had attended Alcoholics Anonymous
meetings but quit, finding them boring. He'd go off drugs for a few weeks,
maybe several months, then relapse, and slip back into the habit.


Johnny's future didn't look promising. His parents refused to pay for any
more treatment programs, which were running $16,000 a month. The insurance
companies had written him off as hopeless, and if Johnny had gone to see
any other physician besides Dr. Jay Holder, chances are they'd have
recommended he attend more AA meetings and wished him well.


The trouble is, this is most often the guarantee of a dead end, which is
why an estimated 35 out of 36 addicts never make it to treatment, fair very
poorly, and often die. The 1 out of 36 is lucky enough to enter an
addiction treatment program. A chronic addict, Johnny was down and out, and
likely to stay permanently down. Of course, that's not the way Dr. Holder
saw things.


After taking his case history, Holder began examining Johnny on the
treatment table. Using a unique diagnostic and chiropractic treatment
system called Torque Release Technique which Holder co-developed with
chiropractor Marvin A. Talsky, D.C., Holder was able to tell which
vertebrae in Johnny's spinal column were out of alignment. Chiropractors
call this condition a subluxation; here any one of your spine's 33
vertebrae is partially dislocated. But the concept has a deeper meaning for
Dr. Holder. "To us, a subluxation means a separation from wholeness that
interferes with your body's ability to function in a whole way."


Every addicted person will have a subluxated spine with at least one or
more vertebrae out of alignment, Holder says. Using a handheld spinal
adjustment instrument he invented himself, called the Integrator™, Holder
makes a few adjustments (never more than 3 in one visit) on Johnny's spine,
using a minimum of force and pressure.


In addition to correcting Johnny's subluxations, Dr. Holder will start him
on a series of 4 amino acids (precursors to or building blocks for
proteins, normally found in foods) taken daily as oral supplements. These
include L-phenylalinine (750 mg daily), D-phenylalinine (750 mg daily),
l-glutamine (300 mg), and


L-tyrosine (900 mg daily).


If this were anywhere else than the U.S., Dr. Holder would also give Johnny
400 mg of the amino acid L-tryptophan. Unfortunately, although the
substance's efficacy has been proven, the FDA forbids its use in this
country. Dr. Holder will keep Johnny on this amino acid combination for at
least a year.


The idea is that the chiropractic adjustment will remove the interference
to the natural flow of brain chemicals but you still need to shore up the
body's supplies of these substances, vital for addiction recovery, for a
fair amount of time. The amino acids will help Johnny make important
changes in his behavior, which are crucial to the success of his treatment
program and will help to guarantee that he stays off drugs for good in the
future. Specifically, the amino acids, especially phenylalinine, the
"addiction-treatment king," will help "restore the brain reward cascade"
(see below) and its bodywide sense of well-being; it will greatly reduce
stress and lift depression as well.


In addition, Johnny is attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings every day and
receiving expert addiction counselling at least once a week, both of which
are provided in Dr. Holder's clinic. He may also receive some acupuncture
treatment on his ears. "We integrate all 5 modalities for the best
results," Holder explains, "but I emphasize that of all the modalities, the
one that offers the greatest benefit for the dollar invested is
chiropractic."


The next day, Dr. Holder adjusts Johnny again, and makes sure he takes his
amino acid capsules. On the third day, Johnny comes in with his family.
They can't believe the changes in his condition and want to know what kind
of miracle Dr. Holder has performed on their son.


"He doesn't yell or mope anymore," says Johnny's mother. "He has more
attention, smiles frequently, even goes to work on time," says his father.
And Johnny says: "I don't cry at night any more and I no longer dream about
my drug. My drug appetite is completely gone. I feel no nagging to go back
and take some more cocaine."


Holder isn't surprised. He's seen results like this often with many other
chronically addicted people. "Under chiropractic care, they show a
remarkable difference compared to any other addiction treatment program.
They become open, relaxed, and compliant as their anxiety and depression
lift. Their heads clear, their thinking improves, they get in touch with
their feelings, and they open up to group therapy and the treatment program
with a surprising intensity." A couple of years later Johnny pays Dr.
Holder a visit. He's still off drugs and is getting married-and he's never
relapsed.


There is, technically, no cure for addictions because, as the saying goes,
"once a pickle, never a cucumber." Addiction treatment experts, including
Dr. Holder, speak in terms of recovery and the ability to stay off drugs
more or less permanently. So there is the possibility of successful and
long-lasting intervention and recovery and Dr. Holder has put together the
5 elements that produce these previously unheard-of results. In case you're
wondering if this is too good to be true, Dr. Holder has the statistics to
prove chiropractic can get results like this.


The key factor in addiction studies is how long an addicted person will
stay in the treatment program which typically runs 28 days. Experts call
this the retention rate. The national retention average is 72%, which means
out of 100 people in treatment, 28 will quit. Those who finish the program
stand an 85% chance of staying drugfree 5 years later. So if you can get
more people to finish the program, you basically come as close as possible
to "curing" them-Dr. Holder calls it "securing an on going recovery"-of
their addictions. Dr. Holder knew he could improve the odds and he did, by
a great deal.


First, using acupuncture to treat six specific points on the ears, Holder
got the retention rate up to 96%. But even here, Dr. Holder made an
important contribution to the field of auriculotherapy, or treating
acupuncture points on the ear. Classical Chinese medicine describes 5 ear
points which can produce beneficial results in treating all addictions.


Then Dr. Holder, working with new information about the energetics of the
ear, identified 3 completely new treatment points, again for all
addictions. That new information has to do with the fact that there are 4
cranial nerves that have nerve endings throughout the ear and these are the
points treated with needles.


Before Dr. Holder refined his understanding of the contribution
subluxation-based chiropractic could make in addiction treatment, he had
been using ear acupuncture 100% of the time; now he uses it with about 20%
of his patients, when they need an extra energy boost to lift their
depression and cut drug appetite.





Ear acupuncture is excellent for helping to relax the patient, which in
turn allows addicted persons to be more compliant and open to the complete
therapy program. It also enables them to feel less apathetic and more
motivated to stay off drugs; further, it cuts down on drug craving and
reduces their sense of physical and emotional withdrawal.


What's innovative about Holder's use of auriculotherapy is that he no
longer uses the traditional needles. Instead he uses a Stim-Flex 400, which
is a small handheld probe that delivers between 2.5-160 Hz in microcurrent
to specific ear points for 8-16 seconds per point, maximum. This is in
comparison to needle-delivered ear acupuncture which can require anywhere
from 45-60 minutes. The microcurrent probe approach is thus far more
efficient and specific, and helps release the pleasure-producing brain
chemicals called endorphins much more quickly and more thoroughly than
needle treatment.

So Holder was getting highly impressive results with his new developments
in ear acupuncture, but then he found something even better: chiropractic.
In a special trial with 100 addicts, when Holder gave them 20 chiropractic
adjustments over a 30 day period, he got the retention rate up to 100% "
That is unheard of; it's never happened before in addiction treatment,"
Holder says. Bear in mind that at a national average of only $30 per
chiropractic adjustment, this astounding success rate cost only about $600
per addicted person per month. Add to this $30 for a one month's supply of
amino acids and $240-$400 a month for 4 addiction counselling sessions, and
you have a total addiction treatment program cost of about $870-$1030.
Johnny's unsuccessful treatment, by comparison, had been costing his family
$16,000 per month.

Johnny's parents saw the results but, naturally, they couldn't understand
how chiropractic could have achieved it. The answer is almost as startling
as the treatment's success.


But you first have to define a few basic terms, says Holder, such as what
is addiction? "Simply put, addiction is compulsive use in spite of negative
consequences." You keep using a substance even though you know it's bad for
you. There are 5 types of addictions, including work, food, sex,
drugs-chemicals, and gambling, and each one has many factors. "But these 5
categories are all symptoms of one disease-addiction."

According to research Holder has collected and thought about deeply,
there are two key factorsat play in causing addictions. First, according to
Holder's colleague, Kenneth Blum, Ph.D. of the University of Texas Health
Science Center at San Antonio, there is a genetic cause.


Dr. Blum discovered the same specific genetic flaw (called "the A1 allele
of the D2 dopamine receptor") in 69% of severe alcoholics compared to only
20% of nonalcoholic people.


It was Dr. Blum who developed the unique amino acid treatment plan for
addictions, as the result of 30 years of painstaking research. "Because the
brain reward cascade is a linear sequence of brain chemicals, Dr. Blum
determined that certain intervention approaches could help to balance this
important function and produce beneficial restorative effects," Dr. Holder
explains. The amino acids, in other words, are necessary precursors, or
building blocks, for the brain reward cascade chemicals (called
neurotransmitters) which are chronically deficient in the addicted person.


Second, according to Holder's research, an estimated 90% of babies born
through forcep or suction-cup assisted deliveries, arrive in this world
with a subluxation. If the infant has the genetic defect associated with
addiction and gets its spine dangerously stretched and misaligned at birth,
then the chances of becoming an addicted adult are very high, Holder claims.


What's the connection between a subluxated spine and addictions? It has to
do with a precise sequence of chemical changes in your brain called brain
reward cascade. If this cascade goes well with no interferences, you feel
good, full of well-being and pleasure; if the sequence is interfered with,
you may start looking to mood-altering substances or activities to fill the
gap. These brain chemicals are called neurotransmitters and they must be
released in the right sequence (like falling dominoes) for you to feel good.


The biochemical bottom line here at the end of this cascade is called
dopamine, and, for those born with the genetic defect, their dopamine will
never work right. If your brain releases it, you feel good. The dopamine
reward may be the biochemical secret to understanding addictions.


When your spine is out of alignment, or subluxated, says Holder, it
interrupts this important biochemical sequence in your brain. You start
experiencing disturbing emotions and crave substances to change, relieve,
or suppress your feelings. But how does a subluxation somewhere in your
back interfere with the flow of chemicals in your brain? This is where
Holder's theory gets very interesting.Your brain is not just in your head,
but in your spine as well.


Brain scientists explain that your emotions take place in the midbrain
(also called the limbic system). Your sense of well-being, biochemically
speaking, is seated in the limbic system. The brain reward cascade takes
place here. Now, the limbic system has outposts throughout the spinal cord
in little anatomical features called the "dorsal horn," according to
ground-breaking research by the renowned scientist Dr. Candace Pert who
discovered this in 1988. In other words, your limbic system is represented
throughout the entire spinal cord.


This means if your spine is subluxated anywhere along its length, this
condition interferes with your limbic system and the flow of feel-good
chemicals in your head. If you are a person with the specific genetic flaw
associated with addictions, you will probably never have that same feeling
of self-contentment, pleasure, and total well-being available to the rest
of the nonaddicted population. You may take up addictive substances or
activities to compensate.

There is yet another intriguing link. It turns out that children
who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Tourette's
Syndrome, also have this identical genetic defect. In other words, Holder
explains, compulsive disorders affecting children is our nations' number
one pediatric complaint. They affect 5-8% of boys and 2-4% of girls, and
are highly similar in cause to addictions. This also means that what
successfully treats adult addictions can be highly useful with hyperactive
children. Holder proved this by reversing abnormal brain waves in ADHD
patients using his Torque Release Technique.


The good news and the beauty of the approach is that when you remove the
addict's subluxation, as Dr. Holder did with Johnny, you allow the brain
reward cascade of feel-good biochemicals to run properly again, perhaps for
the first time in the person's life. This in turn enables you to feel good
and no longer seek outside substances to produce a sense of well-being.


There are about 50,000 chiropractors practicing in America today. This
means that any addicted person or child with hyperactivity who goes to a
chiropractor who treats subluxations can probably expect some immediate
relief from their addicted or compulsive behavior, Holder says. You might
say that chiropractic gets the dopamine flowing again, balancing the brain
reward cascade. While a chiropractor who removes subluxations will most
likely help an addicted person to start feeling better, you get even better
results by far if your chiropractor is trained in all the protocols of
addictionology.


If you go to a chiropractor trained in Dr. Holder's Torque Release
Technique (TRT) or to one who has graduated from Dr. Holder's Certified
Addiction Professional (CAP) program, you're likely to get the best
results. "Because addiction is a multifactorial disease, you need a
multifactorial approach to get the best results. We consider TRT the
'faster car' for addiction treatment," Holder says. Through his American
College of Addictionology, Dr. Holder is training health professionals all
over the U.S. in a 120-hour Certified Addiction Professional program; he's
also teaching TRT to as many chiropractors as he can manage.


The result is that chiropractic is poised to make a dramatic leap forward
in what they can offer the public as the nation's second largest primary
health care profession. As a leading modality in alternative medicine,
Holder says, chiropractic offers the public something that conventional
medicine cannot: a drugfree addiction treatment program. Johnny never got
better with the drugs his psychiatrists prescribed because they were
mood-altering substances; they simply reinforced his addiction, making him
dependent on yet other chemical substances to feel better.


"This is the big news. We now have a bold new approach to treating
addictions that has a very high success rate and is highly cost-effective.
It works so well because it removes the interference (the subluxation) to
the brain reward cascade and allows you to feel good about yourself,"
Holder says.


Dr. Holder is getting astonishing results in places where previously no one
dared to tread. This is the area of pregnant cocaine addicts. Normally,
women in this condition find no sympathy in America's 8000 addiction
treatment programs on account of the staggering insurance liabilities. Even
worse, the local governments tend to regard them as criminal child abusers
and arrest them, severing them from their children, and thus creating
families that are even more broken and dysfunctional.


The statistics are grim, says Dr. Holder, but there are some communities in
the U.S. today where 15% of all babies born are drug babies, born to
mothers who were addicted while carrying the fetuses. In contrast, 15 years
ago, this situation was unheard of, which means the incidence of drug
babies has been growing by 1% a year. If this continues for another two
generations, we could be looking at a situation in which there are no
normal babies born at all, Dr. Holder says. This is why his was one of ten
addiction treatment programs that made a bold proposal to the federal
government a few years ago to take a new approach.


A colleague of Dr. Holder, Matthew Gissen, executive director of Village
Treatment Center, came up with an innovative concept in treatment program
design. The solution was what Drs. Holder and Gissen call, affectionately,
the "pregnant mommie house." This is a refitted 7-story building in Miami
where addicted pregnant women come for treatment. They have their babies
and continue the treatment program for up to 2 years-without the fear of
arrest, reprisal, or punishment for so-called child abuse. The approach
worked so well, says Dr. Holder, that today there are about 50 similar
programs scattered around the U.S.


One day Dr. Holder walked into the pregnant mommie house. A young woman
grabbed his arm with a happy gleam in her eye. She brought him into her
room where she proudly displayed her healthy newborn baby, barely a week
old. She asked Dr. Holder to cradle her son and share the moment, as this
was truly a special, rare moment, in which all the work of doctor and
patient came to a happy resolution.


"If you could just see the look in that mother's eyes, her pride and
self-esteem that she had experienced the miracle of recovery, that she had
accomplished something truly important for her son," says Dr. Holder. There
she was, a drugfree mother with her drugfree newborn. The drug addiction
would not be passed on to the next generation, not with this mother. "She
was actually realizing in that moment that she had conquered a
life-threatening disease and would not pass it on to her child-you couldn't
leave that room with a dry eye," Dr. Holder adds.


All of this leaves chiropractic looking pretty good on its 100th
anniversary. Acupuncturists get excellent results in treating addictions
but there are only 7000 of them for a population of 256 million.
Conventional doctors can't successfully treat addictions because there is
no addiction training in medical schools and doctors prescribe
mood-altering drugs that can keep the addicts addicted to substances and at
risk to relapse.


"Chiropractors are thus the logical primary intervention resource to deal
with the nation's number one cause of death," says Holder. How this daring
claim plays out in the the profession's next 100 years remains to be seen,
but nobody expects recovered addicts like Johnny to argue the point.


"Our program integrates five modalities-chiropractic, amino acids, ear
acupuncture, counseling, Alcoholics Anonymous-but I emphasize that of all
these, the one that offers the greatest benefit for the dollar invested is
chiropractic."


Dr. Holder adjusts a patient with the integrator[TM], a device he invented
to apply "torque" to remove subluxations.


Holder was getting highly impressive results with his new developments in
ear acupuncture, but then he found something even better-chiropractic. In a
special trial with 100 addicts, when Holder gave them 20 chiropractic
adjustments over a 30 day period, he got the retention rate up to 100%.

It's estimated that 10% of American children have some form of behavioral or
learning disability. For these unfortunate children the routine answer is
Ritalin or Dexedrine, a kind of biochemical straightjacket that is now taken
by hundreds of thousands of children.

But homeopathy has an alternative treatment for kids who bounce off the
walls and act up in class, says homeopath Judyth Reichenberg-Ullman, N.D.,
M.S.W, director of the Northwest Center for Homeopathic Medicine in Edmonds,
Washington.


Ben, age 5, was worse than rambunctious. He was disobedient and defiant; he
often got hysterical and would shout, cry, yell, throw things, hit children,
push them around, get suddenly violent, and he always had to be in charge.
His bones ached, he had painful warts, he often had ear infections and had
taken a lot of antiobiotics by the time his homeopath treated him.


A single dose of homeopathic Cina, made from the flower wormseed, completely
turned Ben around. Almost overnight he became a model boy: "He is terrific,
as perfect as a boy can be," declared his mother.


Jimmy, age 9, was an abused boy. His parents were alcoholics who either beat
him or ignored him; most of the time he lived in a foster home. In school,
his teachers described him as a disruptive trouble-maker. He constantly
hummed, sang, and twiddled; at night, he tossed and turned; he was always
impatient, over-active, and restless.

HYPERACTIVITY. According to Patricia Meyer, B.F.A.,
and Andrea Schor, M.Ed., flower remedy therapy is effective in treating
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in teenagers. Meyer and
Schor, who are certified flower essence practitioners, worked with 2 male
twins, aged 14. Both boys had severe behavioral problems: they fought
constantly, acted aggressively, violently, and impulsively; and they were on
Dexedrine, the conventional drug for ADHD.

Each boy started taking a set of flower
essences including Five-Flower Formula, Self-Heal, and Holly, plus 5-8
additional remedies specific to their individual personalities. They took
the essences daily for several months; soon, parents and practitioners noted
dramatic changes for the better in their temperament. Both boys were more
relaxed, less combative, and did better in school. Ten months after
beginning treatment, they were taken off Dexedrine and were judged to be
free of ADHD symptoms.

How to Reverse Hyperactivity and Get Your Child Off Ritalin


Caroline was a six-year-old girl who couldn’t sit still at school.
Caroline’s mastery of speech was delayed, she had a chronically runny nose,
she was on Ritalin for her hyperactivity, and her doctors and teachers were
ready to pin on her a label of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), reports
Constantine A. Kotsanis, M.D., medical director of MindBody Health Center
International in Grapevine, Texas. In fact, her hyperactivity was such a
problem in the classroom that her teacher felt Caroline’s parents needed to
find another school for her.

Dr. Kotsanis doesn’t like putting medically-convenient labels, such as
ADD, on children because it can stigmatize the child and often obscure the
real causes of the heightened or uncontrolled activity. Many times one of
those real causes is an undiagnosed allergy, Dr. Kotsanis says, as it turned
out to be with Caroline. Her parents first noticed she had a problem at age
seven months; intermittently, she had high fevers accompanied by seizures
until she was 18 months old.

When she was four, Caroline had frequent urinary infections and was
diagnosed with hyperactivity and borderline ("high function") autism. At
this point, she was put on Ritalin; by the time her parents discovered Dr.
Kotsanis, they were eager to get their child off the drug.

Studying Caroline’s face, Dr. Kotsanis saw many signs, familiar to him,
of unresolved allergies. The nasal drip, for example, was indicative of mold
and food allergies, says Dr. Kotsanis, who frequently sees children
diagnosed with ADD bearing mild to severe (and untreated) allergies. A skin
prick test for the IgE and IgG immunoglobulins (two of five specialized
immune system proteins, useful for identifying immediate and delayed
reactions, respectively) confirmed that Caroline had allergies to certain
foods, trees, histamines, and glycerins.

Caroline’s symptoms were "a little bit of a mixed bag," says
Dr. Kotsanis. "They were a little bit autistic, a little bit ADD, and a
little bit ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Her
symptomatology, on a scale of one to ten, with ten being the worst, was
about a five."

Dr. Kotsanis took Caroline off all sugar products, both natural and
synthetic (such as NutraSweet), and had her avoid all milk products, food
dyes, white flour, gluten, and canned or processed foods. Red dye
especially, her parents said, tended to get Caroline "climbing the walls."

Dr. Kotsanis asked Caroline’s parents to feed her exclusively at home
(restaurant food or anything prepackaged or canned had to be avoided) using
organically-raised produce. In consultation with Jay Apte, a specialist in
Ayurvedic nutrition on the MindBody Health Center’s staff, Dr. Kotsanis had
Caroline avoid all cold foods and any foods that would create mucus in the
body, such as dairy and "junk" foods.

To get a more detailed understanding of Caroline’s digestive system and
nutrient absorption, Dr. Kotsanis ordered a comprehensive stool analysis.
This gave him the information he needed to prescribe specialized nutrients
to correct the digestive underpinnings of Caroline’s problems. The analysis
showed that Caroline had a malabsorption problem and a yeast overgrowth of
Candida albicans.


To ADDress the Candida, Dr. Kotsanis started Caroline on a short-term dose
of Nystatin, a conventional drug for fungal infections, which she took in
capsule form two times daily for four weeks. He also gave her a series of
four injections, at two-month intervals, containing homeopathic remedies for
food, inhalant, mold, and dander allergies.

Typically, a patient receives 11 shots during a three-year period, then goes
on to a maintenance schedule of occasional injections. The homeopathic
remedies (made from the allergens themselves) are low potency and
"piggy-backed" onto shark cartilage as a carrier, says Dr. Kotsanis. "The
contents program the immune system’s T-lymphocyte cells to fight the
allergens," he says.

Next, he gave her Permeability Factor, 1/2 capsule, three times daily
between meals for six weeks, followed by the same dosage for one week per
month for one year. This is a "nutritional stabilizing formula" containing
amino acids, oils, and vitamins derived from marine sources, borage and rice
bran oils, and lecithin. Its purpose is to regulate the lining and activity
of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the intestines.

Dr. Kotsanis also put Caroline on Ultra Flora Plus, 1/4 teaspoon, two times
daily in four ounces of warm water for six weeks, then up to 1/2 teaspoon,
two times daily for six weeks. The purpose of this formula is to replenish
beneficial bacteria (such as Lactobacillus acidophilus) in the intestines
and thereby improve the absorption of nutrients made possible by these
bacteria, says Dr. Kotsanis.

To enhance digestion in the stomach and small intestine, Dr. Kotsanis
started Caroline on Vital Zymes, an enzyme mixture, taken once daily just
before lunch. A nutrient formula called Super Nu-Thera®, specifically
developed for hyperactive children and containing vitamin B6 (and other B
vitamins), magnesium, and ADDitional key nutrients, was next on Dr.
Kotsanis’ program for Caroline. Super Nu-Thera® #200 Nutrient Powder was
given at the rate of 1/8 teaspoon once daily, building to twice daily, then
to 1/2 teaspoon daily for at least six weeks.

Research conducted and/or reported by Bernard Rimland, Ph.D., of the Autism
Research Institute in San Diego, California, indicates that 30 to 40% of
autistic children (out of a test group of 200) responded highly favorably to
high-dose vitamin B6 in combination with magnesium. Improvements included
better eye contact, fewer tantrums, more interest in the outer world, and
more normal behavior in general.

Dr. Kotsanis also applied two other innovative techniques to improve
Caroline’s condition. First, he used an approach called sensory integration
to sharpen her ability to focus and concentrate while remaining centered in
her body. This approach involves simple but effective exercises such as
balancing, walking in a straight line, looking at a dot, and dry skin
brushing.

Caroline was to brush her skin (torso and extremities, but not head or
genitals) in a circular fashion every two hours. When possible, Caroline was
to do the brushing while walking and balancing. During the daytime, she was
also to be wrapped tightly in a bedsheet—"like an Egyptian mummy," says Dr.
Kotsanis—for ten minutes every two hours. "This stops the hyperactivity,
literally. As she lies there on the floor facing up, she plays visual
tic-tac-toe with a ball hanging over her eyes. This helps to calm the child
and integrate the activities of both eyes."

Secondly, Dr. Kotsanis used an audio enhancement training method developed
by the French physician Guy Berard, M.D., and involves music. Dr. Kotsanis
uses a special device that filters out certain frequencies to which the
patient is hypersensitive. After a while, the patient’s hearing normalizes
on these frequencies. "Patients like Caroline are usually hypersensitive to
loud noises; this technique helps to retrain them to listen more
selectively, and it teaches their auditory system to communicate with the
environment." Dr. Kotsanis has used this technique to transform nonverbal
children into speaking ones; often, they emerge with better socialization
skills and eating and sleeping patterns, he ADDs.

A third technique, not used in Caroline’s case, involves special prism
lenses to correct visual problems associated with (and possibly partly
causing) behavioral and learning disabilities. The therapeutic use of prism
lenses—they look and are worn like glasses—is part of a field called
functional or behavioral optometry. "Prism lenses are the correct treatment
for dyslexia and can reverse dyslexia quickly," says Dr. Kotsanis.

Dr. Kotsanis’ multifaceted program for Caroline yielded successful
results. By the time of her second allergy shot (about one month after
beginning treatment), she was stable and calm enough to be taken off the
Ritalin (which she had been receiving at 10 mg daily).

Caroline’s school behavior, which formerly her teachers had rated as
"terrible,"
now quickly improved to "good" and her teachers began remarking "how well
she was doing," says Dr. Kotsanis. In ADDition to the special homeopathic
allergy shots, "the key to stopping the Ritalin was the elimination of all
sugar products, both natural and artificial."

Caroline’s mother reported that her daughter’s speech abilities
grew quickly, expanding from one or two words at a time to full sentences,
after about five months on the program. Caroline was also able to sit still
for up to 21/2 hours of special education classes whereas formerly the most
she could manage before fidgeting was ten minutes. She sleeps much better at
night and can fall asleep now without the presence of a parent. Caroline no
longer needs diapers and is able to play with other children, where before
she could not, says Dr. Kotsanis.

Chiropractic Can Help Your Child Read Better

If your child has difficulty in reading, comprehension, and recall, it may
be due to a misalignment of the bones of the skull, says chiropractor
Charles A. Simkovich, D.C., who practices in Wexford, Pennsylvania. Since
1984, Dr. Simkovich has treated over 1,000 children for a variety of
learning disabilities.

From this work, he’s discerned a consistent pattern. There are typically one
of three factors that produce learning disabilities in children, he says.
First, there is the aftermath of a physical blow to the head, some kind of
physical trauma that has misaligned the cranial bones.

Dr. Simkovich calls this the cranial injury complex, and it may have come
from the birthing process or falling as a toddler. Accidents to the skull
that occur on the sides of the head, rather than the front or back, are most
likely to produce this complex, he notes. Every child Dr. Simkovich has
treated has had this problem to some extent.

The second factor is a chemical trauma that manifests as multiple allergies
to foods, substances, and inhalants. The allergic trauma compromises the
child’s mental abilities. Often if the mother took powerful drugs before her
pregnancy (birth control pills), while pregnant (antibiotics), or during
delivery (Pitocin), the effects of these drugs are registered on the fetus.
Children who come out of this background are prone to hyperactivity or
attention deficit disorder, Dr. Simkovich maintains. The third factor
contributing to learning difficulties is heredity, he says.



Untilting the Sphenoid Bone

The way physical traumas to the head can produce learning disabilities is
clearly shown in the case of Margueritte. A first-grader (age 7),
Margueritte had trouble reading. Her eyes wouldn’t track the words on the
pages, and she couldn’t remember much of what she did manage to read.

During group reading sessions, when her class would sit in a circle, taking
turns reading out loud, Margueritte’s teacher would humiliate her by sending
her back to her chair. Her classmates ridiculed her and Margueritte often
cried at her desk over her reading failure.



During his examination of Margueritte, Dr. Simkovich determined that she had
several cranial injuries. The sphenoid, a wedge-shaped bone at the base of
the skull, was tilted on the left side; it’s supposed to be level.

This meant that the left side of Margueritte’s brain, which pertains to
analytical, logical word processing and comprehension functions, was being
“squeezed” and therefore unable to work optimally, explains Dr. Simkovich.
He contends that the tilted sphenoid is actually a major influence in
learning disabilities, displacing brain function, which should involve both
brain hemispheres, to predominantly one side.

In addition, in Margueritte’s case, the meninges, the membranes covering the
brain and spinal cord, were twisted to one side in her skull. Further, the
dura mater, the outermost of the three layers of the meninges, was “loose,”
a condition which also contributed to the unequal pressure being applied to
her brain.

To understand how these factors are a problem you need to add one more
element to the explanation, says Dr. Simkovich. The cranial bones move
slightly each time you inhale and exhale, he explains. If these bones are
misaligned or tilted, parts of the brain are subject to unequal pressure
with every respiration. Bear in mind that the average person, resting,
breathes in and out about 720 times every hour. Dr. Simkovich’s research
indicates that “the vast majority of [learning disabilities] are caused by
physical problems, largely the abnormal movement of the cranial bones during
normal respiration.”

These three physical factors were the primary reason for Margueritte’s
reading problems, says Dr. Simkovich. There was nothing in Margueritte’s
medical history that could account for the cranial injuries, so Dr.
Simkovich put it down to heredity.

To make the corrections, he relied on a chiropractic strategy called neural
organization technique, developed by New York chiropractor Carl A. Ferreri,
D.C., in 1982. This technique focuses on reorganizing the nervous system as
it relates to the brain and spinal cord for the purposes of reversing
dyslexia and learning disabilities.

One of the unusual aspects of this approach is that often the chiropractor
makes adjustments inside the patient’s mouth. That’s because the tips (or
wings) of the sphenoid bone, and their connecting muscles, lie just under
the roof of the mouth, so the mouth is the easiest place to get at the
sphenoid, explains Dr. Simkovich.

He gave Margueritte three chiropractic treatments in the first week, then a
few more two weeks later. Dr. Simkovich worked primarily on the cranial
bones, the neck, and inside her mouth. “With Margueritte, it took relatively
few treatments to get good results,” comments Dr. Simkovich.

Margueritte’s mother reported that within the few days following the first
treatment, Margueritte was reading fluently and was happy, no longer crying
at her school desk. Dr. Simkovich relates that during that first session,
Margueritte was initially resistant to treatment and wouldn’t look at him.
After a few treatments, this all changed. “She became bubbly, talked my ear
off, and would give me a big hug when she came in the office,” he reflects.
This was over ten years ago.

Getting a Teenager Off Ritalin

The case of Ramsey, 13, illustrates the role of chemical trauma in the
development of learning disabilities, says Dr. Simkovich. When he came to
Dr. Simkovich, Ramsey was on a high dose of Ritalin, the conventional drug
commonly prescribed for a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD).

Ramsey had visual tracking problems and difficulties with short-term memory,
coordination, and controlling his “high impulsivity.” He would often yell
out suddenly and exhibit other forms of inappropriate, disruptive behavior.
Ramsey also suffered from chronic sinus congestion, suggestive of allergies.

During his examination of Ramsey, Dr. Simkovich found several indications of
cranial injury complex. As with Margueritte, Ramsey’s meninges were twisted
and his dura mater misaligned. The unequal pressure on Ramsey’s brain was
producing a suppression of the left side of his brain (the logical side) and
an overstimulation of the right hemisphere (which pertains more to emotions
and artistic and intuitive expression).

Dr. Simkovich believed that Ramsey’s chronic allergies were related to the
fact that, during her labor, his mother had been given Pitocin to speed up
the delivery. Chemical traces of this powerful drug were passed on to
Ramsey, eventually leading to allergies, says Dr. Simkovich. As a result of
these factors, Ramsey was “neurologically disorganized.”

Dr. Simkovich treated Ramsey four times during the first week. Over the
course of the next year, Dr. Simkovich worked closely with Ramsey’s parents
and pediatrician to gradually reduce the Ritalin dosage.

Given the high dose and the fact that Ramsey had been on the strong drug for
a few years, this dose reduction had to be done carefully and in stages.
With each new reduction, new chiropractic adjustments were needed to realign
Ramsey’s body at a new level of competence, Dr. Simkovich says.

It took about a year of twice-weekly treatments to get Ramsey completely off
the Ritalin and “functioning regularly.” To reduce the allergies, Dr.
Simkovich advised Ramsey to avoid all food additives, food dyes, and simple
sugars; he also gave Ramsey an herbal tincture of echinacea to help his
immune system eliminate the allergens.

The patience of everyone involved was rewarded. After that year of
treatment, Ramsey’s grades improved, his attention and concentration were
much better, his outbursts of inappropriate behavior were much reduced, and
aside from an occasional flare-up, his allergies were gone, as evidenced by
no more sinus congestion. Ramsey’s mother told Dr. Simkovich that friends of
hers who hadn’t seen her son for some months “were amazed at the changes in
him.”
