I tried to post this earlier, and don't think it worked.
Anyway, My daughter was just dx'd with ADD last week.
She has OCD and generalized anxiety disorder. I started noticing
signs of the OCD when she was about 2.
She is now 15.
She has been on celexa (now up to 60mg a day)for about a year, when
her rituals got to a point where they were driving her and the
family crazy. Her anxiety was also a problem. She was very unhappy
and scared. She would take a few hours a day to do the rituals.
She had the biggest problem before going to bed. Now, with the
celexa, it is about 70% under control. She still has little
rituals, but they seem more like learned habits now - like taking
the 3rd plate down. She would also have outburst of what seemed
like anger, but I think it was more frustration.
Now, her dr has put her on Adderoll XR - 10mg for ADD. We all think
this may be the answer for her not being able to concentrate,
daydreaming, not paying attention, blah blah blah. She is not
hyperactive, but has always had a lot of energy. She has never been
disruptive in school. She saved it up for when she was at home - in
a "safe place", and would take out her frustration on her brother
and sister.
She seemed more focused in what she is doing on the very first day
of taking Adderoll. Her energy seemed directed at particular
things. She even was able to read her english book and answer the
questions - remembering what she read. She hasn't had any outbursts
since starting it.
She has always seemed like she's in her own little "bubble world" -
not really paying attention to her surroundings, not able to focus,
not remembering things I tell her. Her school work suffers. I was
getting very excited thinking that things are gonna change for her
now.
But, We are worried about the side effects. She has been nauseous,
and hasn't eaten much of anything. She is having trouble falling
asleep, and her dr said she could take lorazepam or valium to help
her fall asleep. Last night, she was feeling dizzy and nauseous,
and couldn't get to sleep. I had to take her downstairs and sleep
with her on the futon. I got her my relaxation tape to listen to,
rubbed her back, and it put her to sleep quickly.
I had given her a lorazepam a little earlier.
Dad and I are worried about all these meds. We are wondering if we
are doing the right thing. We are worried that the combination of
the celexa and the adderoll is not good, even though the dr said
it's ok, and the pharmacist didn't say anything.
She said last night she still wants to take the adderoll, because
she feels like she is more able to concentrate.
But, we all worry about the side effects.
The dr gave us the choice of stratterra or adderoll. She chose
adderoll because he said it had less side effects. But, now I'm
learning that strattera is the drug without the stimulant. And,
that the stimulant in adderoll is not good for people with anxiety
disorders.
I'm so confused! And worried that I just keep giving her all these
serious drugs. And, when you have to take one drug to help with the
side effects of another drug - well, that just scares me more.
I was hoping the side effects would be a short term thing. But I
don't know if she should keep taking the adderoll and hope the side
effects will go away. She hasn't eaten much at all, which adds to,
or may be the cause of her nausea.
So, I wonder if anyone has any words of wisdom for us. I will be
calling the dr when he gets in, and the pharmacist.
Dad and I are afraid of giving her the adderoll this morning. She
started taking it last friday - so it's been just 3 days. On the
2nd day, she forgot I gave her one, and took another (even though I
have told her millions of times not to take ANYTHING without asking
me first). The dr said we could give her 2 a day if we felt it
would help, so we wern't too worried about an overdose. But, that
may have contributed to the side effects. I'm thinking you need to
work up to the higher dose.
So, what can you tell me?
