I have twins that are now seven, both with ADHD.
When they joined grade K, it was awful. I asked and asked for them
to be tested but I kept being told that they were TOO young and the
testing wouldnt be accurate.
I thank GOD at that point that my cousin had already been through
this and told me to put my requests in writing. That changed
everything for my boys and by the time they hit first grade one had
an I.E.P. and the other had reading assistance.
Meds are hard, I medicate all school year long but the boys are off
on weekends and holidays including the summer. I only medicate if
there is a big function where they will need to be able to reel
themselves in a little. They are both on different meds. One is on
generic ritalin and the other is on the time release because he lost
10lbs on the generic ritalin because he wasnt eating. It gave him a
tummy ache and the school didnt notice he was not eating lunches or
snacks.
Its a real long road, I have adhd as well so sometimes its hard
because they overstimulate me and Im not on any meds as insurance no
longer is covering it. For me its not bad, I grew up managing my
whole life because when I was young, they didnt have the diagnoses
yet.
This group must be a life saver for so many parents out there, I
thought I would never make it through that first year before the
diagnoses. The school treated my son so horribly that we almost
pulled him. It is certainly something I cant forget, although I
forgive their ignorance.
Sorry.........had to vent a little.
Are there mostly boys in this group? Half and Half........How long
have your children been diagnosed and how has your school system
treated your children?
Interested to see how everyone else is doing.
A much calmer mom in Massachusetts!
