Re: [ADHD - Online Support Group]-- question about adult adhd

Hello everyone. I am Joann. I have ADD / depression, 34 / 9 year old ADHD son.
Yes, ADD can affect freindships, at least from my experience. I find that once
I'm in a conversation with someone, it can be difficult to keep focused on that
person, and to remember later on what that person has said. So I end up not
seeming interested in the person, and that can affect that person's perception
of me. Also, when I don't remember what they said to me, it also seems to that
person that what they told me was not important to me. One thing I've noticed is
that if I make an extra effort to place my focus on other people (people love to
talk about themselves) instead of myself and my problems, people will want to
talk to me.

These things about ADD can affect both making friends and keeping them. I find
it helpful to make sure I have minimal distractions going on when I am talking
to someone. Usually, just getting to a quiet spot in a room (if in a crowded
room, make sure you face that person, and turn away from the rest of the room
where the distractions are.) I also keep "notes" on what my friends and
aquaintances tell me. During conversation with someone new, I say their name in
conversation 2 or 3 times so I don't forget. As soon as possible after I've
talked to someone, I get my little calendar and write down thier name and as
much as I can remember about what that person said to me, things I found out,
their kids names, for example. That way, I can "study" my notes occasionally.
Later when I meet that person again, I can ask "how's Sally doing in school?"

Sorry if I have rambled on....I tend to lose track of time!
