Hi,
I'm new to the group, & have a 13-year-old son who has been having increasing
difficulty in coping with school and with life. Recent testing by an educational
psychologist showed that he is average-to-well-above-average in intellectual
functioning.
Two years ago he stopped attending school regularly. At the end of this past
school year, the Talmud Torah he had been attending since age 5 gave him a
laminated certificate saying that he had "graduated" from Kita Chet, although he
had not done most of the work or passed the exams, and refused to take him back
to repeat the grade this year.
He is currently not enrolled in any school.
I have been in contact with the Chareidi Education Department of the Irya
since November 2005. They say they are trying to find a place for him, but his
combination of intelligence and emotional immaturity. together with the fact
that no chareidi school can legally be forced to accept a child, make it
difficult. I inquired about the possibility of a therapeutic school, but was
told that they are all very violent and would just do more harm to my son.
I have also been in touch with Kav l'Noar, Tvunot and Rav Shlomo Rein, without
success so far, The educational psychologist who tested him and offered to give
me suggestions about schools and therapists does not return my phone calls.
Now we are well into the school year, and my son is sitting at home every day.
I am willing to consider every reasonable suggestion for a school - day school,
pnimia, etc. Does not have to be chareidi, just a place that will love and
accept a sweet child who is going through a hard time. (My son was born in
Israel and is fluently bilingual, so language is not an issue.)
Does anyone have any ideas for schools - or for an advocate who can get my son
the help he needs?
Thank you. May we all have nachas from our children.
