Hi, folks.
I've been a silent follower of this list for a while, and have appreciated all your collective wisdom. Now, I have a question.
Does anyone have advice about how to make the shul-going experience bearable for a 5th grade boy who hates reading? I'm not talking about tricks to keep a kid in shul whether he's "into" davening or not... Rather, I'm coming up against the realization that Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur davening - which is difficult enough for us - was completely IMPOSSIBLE for my son because of his reading disability.
Shabbat is less of a problem, because there's a kid's minyan in our neighborhood. But I'm saddened by the experience my son had over the chagim, and recognize that he's started to relate to shul as just another place where he can feel misunderstood, angry and dumb.
Any advice about turning this around?
