1; EDITORIAL
Hi all.
Again, sorry, sorry, sorry it's taken me an age to get another
issue out. Rather than try to offer explanations, all I will say
is you are all affected by the effects of ADHD, therefore
I will leave it to your imagination as to some of the problems
I have had over the last year.
Suffice to say we have NOT had any help with George's
epilepsy, the exclusions have started again at the new school
(he finally got back into school after 10 months at home
last year) and all in all things have been BAD. In between all
this I have been trying to carve a bit of a job for myself ........
very difficult when you are tied to appointments, school
problems, George at home with illness, exclusions etc.
Sooooo ....
Thanks again everyone for being so patient with me. Despite
no issue, for months I have had hardly no unsubs which is
really great!
Best wishes - Gail

New UK Research
The Maudsley Hospital in London has been carrying out
research using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and boys
between the ages of 9 and 17, diagnosed with ADHD, but
who are not taking medication. The study will compare 'ADHD
brain' activity with 'normal brain' activity to show whether there
is any difference in brain function. MRI scanners can provide
'a window into the brain' and by non-invasive method and without
any harmful side effects. Those in the UK with an interest, or
involved with ADHD agree this is worthwhile research, which will
hopefully will lead to better services for those affected.

Dear Gail,
I am a final year psychology student at Cardiff university and,
together with the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, London
I am carrying out a research project looking at season of birth
and it's effect on the development of ADHD. That is, ADHD
may be greater in babies who were exposed to viral infections
which occur at greater frequency at certain times of the year
and this may affect the development of their brains. I am also
looking at post-natal depression in mothers of children suffering
from this disorder. I hope that by doing research into these two
as yet neglected fields our knowledge about ADHD will be
increased leading, hopefully to the development of more
effective ways to alleviate this distressing condition.
If anyone can help me, please email me for a questionnaire.
Thank you klimanea@...

Video Games Linked to Aggression in Children
Recent research carried out, using children between the ages
of 8 and 9 has revealed those who watch little television or
video games are less aggressive than those who spend a longer
time involved in these activities. One group of children was
restricted in the time they could spend looking at 'the box',
another not restricted at all from their usual habits.
Results showed 'statistically significant' reductions in physical
and verbal aggression in the second group compared to the first.
There has been known to be a link between TV watching and
aggressive for up to 30 years ago. This new research has
questioned whether less aggressive behaviour due to decreased
TV and videogame watching could be an effect of improved social
skills utilized by children whilst playing and interacting more
with peers, rather than spending the time 'box watching.'

Long Term Outlook For Those With ADHD
How many of us have been told our children will 'grow out of'
ADHD? Admittedly the severity of some symptoms can decline
with age, but around 70% of children with ADHD carry their
difficulties through to adulthood, causing knock-on effects.
A study has shown that by the time children with ADHD have
finished full-time education, they have often completed
around 2 years LESS formal education than peers. It might not
be the core symptoms (hyperactivity, inattention, impulsivity)
as such that are responsible for poor adult outcomes. Rather,
the social behavioural, and academic problems that arise from
these difficulties.

3; CAN YOU HELP ME?
Recently I have been asked from various sources to write about
ADHD / special needs / parenting etc. I would really like to do
this to enable me to spread awareness, not only about conditions
themselves, but about the terrible knock on effects to the family
and especially Mothers.
Therefore, I need volunteer parents who can help me by offering
experiences, email interviews, stories of the difficulties they have
had bringing up their children etc. Some of the particular subjects
I am trying to research at present are;
1; Checking up on your doctor;
In the light or recent events which have come to light regarding
incidents of neglect or even incompetence by medical practitioners,
I am researching whether there is any way I people can check out
medical practitioners before they use them. I feel that it should be
everyone's right to find out the credentials of the people who are
supposedly looking after their, and their families' health. Could
you offer any input to this subject?
2; The devastating effects of expulsion
A recent study from the Children's Society and the Advisory
Centre for Education says that exclusion from school puts
unbearable strain on whole families. In the UK there were
approx 2,910 exclusions in 1990. In the year 1998-1999 the
total had risen to over 10,400! Many of us have 'hands on'
experience of this. Please contact me if you would like to help
me with this.
3; Diagnosing Oneself
With the numerous health sites on the Internet, it is becoming
easier for people to research their own illnesses. What effect
does this have when they go to their doctor saying 'I've got such
and such.' How do those in the medical profession react. Have
you researched your own illness? Did your doctor disagree?
Were you right after all? if you can offer input please email me.
Alternatively, if you would like to help by offering information
on ANY aspects of bringing up ADHD children, if you are willing to be
interviewed, or can let me email you a research question every now
and again please contact me at theadhdgazette@... explaining
what aspects you would like to talk about. I would be REALLY grateful
if anyone would be able to help.
