1; EDITORIAL

Hi all.

Sorry it's taken SSSSooooo long to getting round to putting
an edition out again, but I still have my son off school. Yes folks,
he's now been out of school a full 8 months and there is STILL
no sign of a school being offered for him. I won't bore you all
with the details, old subscribers will already have the full story,
new subscribers will *know* the story anyway, more than likely,

We have also been having tests done on G's Epilepsy. We
EVENTUALLY got to see a proper neurologist about 2 months
ago who arranged an extended EEG to see if there was any
abnormal activity in the brain. G was supposed to go to sleep
for this because apparently, the waves are easier to pick up in
sleep state. However, despite being kept up till after midnight
the night before, being woken at the crack of dawn next morning
AND being administered FOUR sedatives at the hospital he didn't
sleep! This boy is insomniac anyway - he doesn't sleep at nights
these days. How on earth do they expect him to sleep in the
day? He would have been better going to hospital overnight
and them doing it when he was properly asleep. Oh well.

Apart from this we have recently moved house and right up
to two weeks before completion date, we were unsure as to
whether the move was on! It came to 3 days before completion
and our buyers' deposit cheque bounced!!! After much gnashing
of teeth, phone calls and tears, they finally came up with the
deposit and completion was put back a fortnight. Anyway, we
DID move thank goodness. I was very unhappy at the last address
- it held many bad memories and experiences.

Anyway. Thank you all for being so patient, and VERY SPECIAL
thanks to a couple of Internet colleagues who stepped forward
when they knew I was having difficulties and offered to send
their newsletter out in place of mine to help me out. This was
extremely kind and I am ever so grateful. The gestures were
very much appreciated.

Best wishes - Gail

2; FIRST EVER BIOLOGICAL TEST FOR ADHD ANNOUNCED

Any parent of a child will tell you that ADHD is real - very real, but
because of the nature of the disorder (it can't be seen and does not
cause physical disability) it is often thought by other parents, the
general public and even some health and educational professionals,
that it doesn't exist. However it has recently been announced that
there is now a simple test to determine whether or not a person has
ADHD. The test, which unfortunately is still only available in The
States, can easily show whether ADHD is likely in a patient.

There has always been much debate as to the precise cause of
ADHD and much argument has been put forward over the years
about whether it is genetically transmitted or a result of
environment, i.e. bad parenting. Fortunately, with this new test
we are on the verge of resolving this argument for good.

In recent years, scientists have known that there is definitely a link
between ADHD and the brain chemical dopamine, which helps to
control emotions and behaviour. This chemical is transported around
the brain by a tiny molecule called a dopamine transporter (DAT).
There is one theory that ADHD may be a result of an excess of DAT;
too much dopamine being recycled before it has had a chance to do
its job. Preliminary studies revealed that adults diagnosed with ADHD
have a whopping 70% more dopamine transporters than non -
ADHD adults.

This new test requires the patient to have radioactive imaging agent
injected into the body which attaches to these DAT molecules in the
brain. The brain is then scanned and the brighter the image, the
higher the concentration of DAT. The higher the concentration of
DAT, the more likely that person is to have ADHD.

The test is relatively simply, yet has far-reaching implications.
Apart from improving diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, it could,
at last, prove conclusively that ADHD is not just a social condition,
but a biological one. At the present time, ADHD is diagnosed by
clinicians who examine patients' educational and behavioural history
by looking at anecdotal evidence by parents and educators.
Therefore it is occasionally possible that mis-diagnosis may occur.
Researchers believe the new test will help in correct diagnosis.

3; NUTRITIONAL THERAPY

I recently received this letter which may be of interest to UK
readers; (NOTE; Publication of this letter does not mean
endorsement by The ADD / ADHD Gazette)

London Nutrition Clinic
6 Ashbridge Road
London E11 1NH
Tel: (+44) 020 8518 8442

clinic@...

Dear Gail,
I am writing to you to introduce the London Nutrition Clinic,
following requests we have had from parents of children with ADHD.
We work solely with Nutritional Therapy and established the
clinic to treat general health problems as well as specific
conditions.

The main concern of the parents of our ADHD patients involved the
side effects of the medication prescribed, and the inability of
conventional medicine to deal with the underlying causes of the
illness. There is now extensive research identifying nutritional
deficiencies and imbalances in ADHD, and related disorders. These
involve vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, amino acids and
systemic imbalances such as hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).

Also involved are specific dietary factors, allergies or intolerances,
as well as general dietary advice on healthy eating and whole food
eating in particular. Most of our patients and their carers find the
dietary and supplement programmes we recommend quite
manageable.

Our experience of treating ADHD has been very encouraging, the
majority of patients showing rapid and substantial relief of symptoms
and improvement in behaviour and general well being. Parents have
also responded well to the natural approach to healthcare, the
frequent removal of the necessity for medication and the knowledge
that their children's condition is being addressed at the level of the
underlying cause.

Many attempts at treating ADHD nutritionally involved the use of
single vitamins or single dietary changes, whereas as human beings
we require many nutrients and dietary sources in the correct
combination and balance. The approach of nutritional therapy
is to treat each individual patient as a whole and ensure the full
spectrum of nutritional requirements is satisfied, with additional
amounts of those nutrients found to be deficient in each
person and the particular health problems they have.

We have set up our own website, http://www.nutriserve.com
which you might like to look at. This is for the purpose of
providing distance consultations for the many patients who
would like nutritional advice, especially on the use of vitamin
supplements, but are unable to visit the clinic in person. We
provide these either online, if the patients or parents have
access to computers, or more conventionally via postal and
telephone consultations. As there were no providers of
complete nutritional therapy on the web, we set up our site
and distance consultations to cater for this.

Sincerely
John Tunnicliff - London Nutrition Clinic

4; NEW AUSSIE ADHD SITE

I have come across a great new site run by a team of
people calling themselves "ADHD Seminars" and they provide
professional development for teachers at all levels. The team
includes university professors and lecturers, special education
teacher, parents and psychologists. The main criterion for people
they work with is that they must be passionate about helping kids
with ADHD achieve socially and academically.

The site, which can be found at http://www.adhdseminars.com
has loads of interesting and informative content and it is well
worth a visit.

5; RITALIN BANNED

It was recently announced in the UK that the use of Ritalin
for pre-school children is to be banned, amid supposedly
growing fears over the increasing use of Stimulant medication
to treat ADD / ADHD. Ritalin, however, has been regarded
by thousands of parents in the UK as a lifeline since it was first
prescribed here.

Because of an increase in awareness and the blossoming of
regional support groups, many parents have, over the last
few years taken a pro-active approach to getting diagnosis and
treatment for their children. This has meant therefore, that
there has been an increase in prescriptions. Now the National
Health Service's watchdog will issue guidelines advising
caution to clinicians.

The recommendation is that Ritalin should not be given to
under-fives, although in all my years of advocacy work here
in the UK, I have heard of only a handful of cases of the
medication being prescribed to children so young.

Ministers, manufacturers and patients were give a few
weeks to challenge the findings before they are official
release to doctors.
