1; EDITORIAL
Hi all.
Sorry it's taken so long to get this edition out again, but I still
have my son off school. It is now the school Summer holidays
too so that's another 6 weeks of purgatory!
I don't know how much I mentioned, but it was suggested by
the Ed Psych that it might be in G's best interest to go back
to school. This I reluctantly agreed to. I informed school that
he would be back on such and such a day, but I got a letter
back saying that there was no place for him now! Talk about
being kicked in the teeth. Did wonders for his already low
self esteem.
So, George is *still* without education. Leeds Education
Authority have let my son down badly - BADLY. I have
made numerous complaints about the school (Royds School,
Oulton, Leeds) over the last year including about the bullying
and nothing - NOTHING has been done at all.
Next year the running of Leeds schools is being taken off the
council as thegovernment are bringing in a private company to
take over the running of the area's schools because of this#
current lot's sheer incompetence. Now why am I not surprised?
Our story is by no means isolated either. Every other parent
I know who has an ADHD child in a Leeds school has had
problems ....... although not SO extreme as ours. ANYWAY ...
this is why I have had my hands full.
Best wishes - Gail

2; ADD/ADHD GAZETTE FOR SALE
Due to the above, plus the fact that we are *trying* to move
house at the moment and are being messed about slightly,
plus some extreme behaviour and a couple of mild epileptic
episodes from G recently. I have reluctantly decided (to
save my own sanity) to cut down on my work. I am burnt
out and feel I cannot put the effort in required to do
an adequate job.
The phones have been quite busy lately too recently, yes
I still get many phone calls from desperate families wanting
help and advice - even though I'm not directly involved in
Support Group maters anymore. Therefore I feel I am
stretched right to the end of my elastic I'm afraid.
Therefore I have decided to sell The ADD/ADHD Gazette.
I am sure that someone out there will be able to devote
more time to do it the justice it deserves. At present (as of
today) we have 2,380 subscribers, and the first issue went
out around 16 months ago. Therefore, we are well
established and a hell of a lot of work has gone into building
the subscriber base to this size. Hundreds of hours' work has
gone into the promotion of The Gazette since it's inception.
If anyone is interested in buying the newsletter could they
please email me on
theadhdgazette@...
Also, I have another smaller newsletter "Special Needs
Books & Resources For Parents & Professionals Bulletin".
This has a modest 162 subscribers and in a nutshell is
an occasional announcement newsletter featuring reviews
of new books about Special Needs / Psychology /
Children / Education / Parenting etc. (and other resources)
of interest to the parents of children with special needs
and the professionals who work with them. Full details
are at
http://www.egroups.com/group/special-needs-books
I do have approx prices in mind, however I am open
to offers. Should I not get a sale immediately I will keep
on publishing, however it will only be occasionally. I
would rather someone took it over though as we have
something too good here to lose. Anyway, if anyone is
interested, please email me on the above address.

3; HOMEOPATHIC SECRETIN IN THE UK
A friend on the internet informed me recently that it is
now possible to purchase homeopathic Secretin, which
they have been using for their Autistic child, who they
suspect has a leaky gut problem.
At present Secretin injections are very costly and there
are only a couple of doctors in the UK who will
administer it because of the controversy surrounding
the issue. The product is available in pills, or drops
and 100 tablets costs £9 including p&p. The drops
are £9 for 10ml or £17 for 30ml.
The Secretin is manufactured from the porcine hormone
and in manufacture undergoes many dilutions, removing
all trace of the original starting material, (as are all
homeopathic medicines) hence no side effects. It
can be purchased via mail order Ainsworth Homoeopathic
Pharmacy, 36 New Cavendish Street,London, W1M 7LH
020 7935 5330 or e-mail
Ainshom@....
Since my friend started her daughter on the Secretin, she
reports that there have been significant changes Social
Skills, Comprehension,and Verbal Communication, also
a slight changes to her Digestion. These are small things
that she wasn't able to do or express previously. If anyone
wants to email this parent for advice or to see how it's
going, she can be contacted at

4; ARTICLE ; Stress and ADHD by Jule P. Miller III, M.D.
As parents, I am sure you know all too well how stressful
it can be to raise a child with ADHD. It is also probably
clear to you that having ADHD is stressful on your child.
Friendships are interrupted by impulsive and aggravating
behavior. Criticism at school may seem relentless. The
child is constantly being labelled as bad. Those kind of
stresses can be very wearing, so it is not surprising that
children with ADHD may develop problems with low self
esteem, excessive anger, and depression. What we
sometimes miss, being preoccupied with our children's
ADHD, are the effects of all the other stresses our children
are subject to.
I see many children who are depressed, anxious and
stressed-out who do not have ADHD. Living today can
be very stressful. Each person reacts to that stress differently.
Each of us has our Achilles heel, our area of vulnerability.
One person under stress might develop a heart problem,
another might get an ulcer, and still another might lose patches
of hair. Children with ADHD naturally have vulnerabilities in
the areas of attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity, so that
is where they will often show the signs of stress. In other
words, when a child with ADHD is under stress, from
whatever the cause, they tend to be less attentive, more
hyperactive and more impulsive.
When a child comes to me who seems to be getting worse,
I look at the stresses that are going on in that child's life before
considering medication changes. Sometimes it makes sense to
respond to an additional stress with an increase or change of
medication. Other times I can help the child or family deal with
the stress without changing the medication regimen that has
worked until then.
Many stresses are obvious - going to a new school, losing
a best friend, being teased in class - but some are not. I
classify stresses into two main types - internal and external.
The external stresses are the ones we are most familiar with
- a new baby is born and there is less time for everyone. The
internal stresses tend not to be as evident. These are the
stresses within the child's mind.
As they grow, children try to make sense out of the world
the best they can. But they do not see things the way we do.
For instance, a 7 year old may be old enough to appreciate
that the world holds many dangerous things like sharks and
lions, but may not understand that it is very unlikely he will
ever have to face those beasts. Young children have no
conception of probability - the notion that some bad event
can be possible but very improbable. When they realize how
destructive a tornado can be, they tend to fear that one might
come destroy their house tomorrow. Any child who starts
worrying about things like that might become less attentive
and more hyperactive. Think about how you respond when
you get really worried about something and you can imagine
how it might be for your child.
Another source of inner stress for a child is the conflict that is
caused in trying to fit together all the different ways he feels
about himself and the others in his life. Every relationship we
are in will, to at least some extent, stir up feelings of frustration
and anger. Children cannot help but be angry with and resent
the people they depend on and who tell them "no." But they also
love their parents and idealize them. What do they do with their
feelings of anger, resentment, jealousy and hate? It is not an
easy task, and it can be very stressful on the child, who may feel
confused and torn between opposite feelings. Children with
ADHD may have a particularly hard time integrating these
feelings because they have generally had more conflictual
episodes with their parents and more reason to be angry.
It is not surprising then, that there is a high incidence of
Oppositional Defiant Disorder and depression in children
with ADHD.
Children who are having trouble with inner stresses can often
benefit from psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is a way to identify
and sort out the confusing feelings and to help the child in
coping. Children can also be helped by having their parents
understand what they are going through.
We can help our children to grow by being aware that there is
an optimal window of experience for emotional development.
We all need a certain amount of love, understanding and
comfort, but we also need a certain amount of discipline and
limit setting. There is a range of love and discipline that may be
different for every child and even for every moment. As long as
we stay within that range our children can cope and grow and
learn. If we do not pay attention to where his range is at that
moment, we can make the mistake of either being too lax and
having the child run wild, or being too strict and having him react
with excessive anger and internal stress. Finding that range is
not always easy, but it is important to try.
As you look for that range, you will realize that it will change
depending on how stressed the child is. A child who is under
a lot of stress may have a very narrow range of what he needs
from his parents. Being aware of the stresses your child is under,
both internally and externally, can help you find the optimal
range of responsiveness to help your child grow.

5; 2 FABULOUS NEW BOOKS
Hi Gail,
I just wanted to let you know that the publisher has decided to
"rush-release" the book that I have written with Dr. Stordy.
It's called "The LCP Solution: The Remarkable Nutritional
Treatment for ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia." (LCP stands
for long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids).
UK;
http://www.Amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345438728/gailmiller
US;
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345438728/theaddadhdgaze
We've already had some wonderful advance reviews from two best
-selling doctor-authors: Edward Hallowell, co-author of "Driven to
Distraction," one of the best books ever written about ADHD says:
"What higher praise can I offer than to say that this book got me
to try the LCP solution on myself and my family members? Of
course, we need more research into the whole topic of nutrition
and the brain before we can draw definitive conclusions, but this
book offers a most persuasive, and potentially dramatically helpful,
approach to improving the lives of people who have ADHD,
dyslexia, and dyspraxia. This is an excellent book, presenting
a fascinating idea."
and
Christiane Northrup, MD, author of the best-selling "Women's
Bodies, Women's Wisdom":
"Several years ago I began researching the effects of one
of the LCPs known as DHA and was astounded by the
well-documented link between this essential fat and brain
health. Ever since, I've told every pregnant woman I've
met to start taking this stuff ASAP! The LCP Solution
contains everything you need to know about how to
achieve brain health through proper dietary supplementation
with LCPs. This book is must reading not only for those
suffering from ADHD and related disorders, but also for
everyone interested in optimal brain health at an age."

Dear Gail,
I have the priviledge of having a chapter in a wonderful
book that has just been published entitled Uniquely Gifted:
Identifying and Meeting the Needs of the Twice Exceptional,
edited by Kiesa Kay
http://www.twicegifted.com
It contains 40 articles by parents, teachers, researchers,
administrators, and students, including people such as Thom
Hartmann and John Ratey. The essays in this book discuss
educational possibilities for gifted students who also have
a disability, in order to understand them and create solutions
to how to reach and teach these students.
I hope that you and your readers will find this book useful
Thanks, M W
