EDITORIAL
Well, the Gazette has been published since around February of last
year and after a false start and one or two hiccups along the way I
feel it is now well established and one of the best ADHD ezines
on the net. (That's the blatant self publicity over with).
I would like to wish all our readers (including many who have been
with us from the first issue!) a very healthy, wealthy and happy
Millennium.
As some of you may know, when The Gazette first came to publication
I made one or two mistakes. A few people jumped on the fact that
it was a new publication with an Editor from a country where ADHD
is still very much under-recognised, under-diagnosed and under-
treated. Therefore I included one or two products and views that did
not perhaps belong here. I still hold the view that traditional
medication is OK but natural is OK too. Whatever you find to be of
help GREAT! I not however, now cover products which might offend
a certain section of the readership.
This is why there has not been *that* much mention of Ritalin or
'nutritional' products and the like. In the beginning, every time medication
OR natural products were mentioned I got a backlash from readers who
preferred the other method of treatment. So in the end I decided that
it was not my job to sit here and take abuse every time an issue went out.
So, this is why The ADHD Gazette now concentrates more on education,
legislation, books, research and behaviour management rather than
looking at one way or the other to manage symptoms.
I think it strikes a good balance though! After all, the subscriber base
is now creeping towards 2,500! We must be doing something right.
So .....
All I am left to say is this is a shorter issue than usual for obvious
reasons. I am looking forward to bringing you all The ADD / ADHD
Gazette this coming year. Oh, and .....

NEWS & VIEWS
Can anyone help this lady please?
Dear Gail,
I am the grandmother of a 6 year old little girl, diagnosed with ADHD.
She is a very loving, but exasperating child. We spent her "K" year
fighting with teachers & school officials to help. Finally we got the
official diagnosis at the end of the school yr. By that time, she was
already behind & damage was done. We fought to put her in 1st grade
based on the fact that it was a medical reason for her lagging, not a
lack of intelligence.
She is now in 1st grade & not doing too badly, except for Math. She
attends a Catholic school. The math teacher claims that she has no
room for her, or time to give her extra attention. The principle always
backs up the teachers. At this point, we are 1/2 way through the year and
no one is making an attempt to help this little girl.
I do not know much about these things, but it is my understanding that if a
school receives Federal funding, then they have to abide by the Disability
Act. Even though it is a Catholic school it should fall into that area. Can
anyone offer any advice? Thank you. N

In the latest issue of The Lancet, there are details of what could become
the first objective measure of ADD / ADHD via a brain scan that measures
the number of dopamine transporters in the brain. This preliminary study
says that with ADD/ADHD have 70 percent more dopamine transporters
in their brains than normal subjects. The study used Single Photon
Emission Computer Tomography or SPECT to look at the findings

focusing on adults with ADD
http://www.add.org/adda_store/video.htm
When children with ADD grow up they become adults with ADD

treatment for ADD, new research findings and the importance of
getting correct diagnosis. The executive producer of Outside In, is

of bringing up her son and here, brings us the culmination of that
research.
The video speaks to the millions of adults who suffer, either knowingly
or unknowingly, from ADD. The video's goals are to generate awareness
about adult ADD and to inspire sufferers to seek proper diagnosis from
a qualified specialist and ultimately receive correct treatment.
The narrator of Outside In is Mariette Hartley, start of stage and screen
