NEWS AND VIEWS

A recent article in the British Medical Journal highlighted the fact
that patients are outdoing their doctors by coming along armed with
information they have downloaded themselves from the Internet.
This new Internet technology means that the face of medicine
might be changing forever.

The author Alejandro R Jadad says that changes in diagnosis and
treatment could be brought about by the growing knowledge of
patients. Video conferencing means patients can get second
opinions on their symptoms from specialists throughout the world
and this increased knowledge could have an unsettling effect on
doctors who are faced with patients who have already researched
their own illness and even cure.

He stated that some doctors are being upstaged and ill prepared
to cope with patients who bring along their own information from
the Internet. This information, in many cases, is more recent than
the doctors' own knowledge about certain condition.

This doesn't surprise me in the least. This is what has been
happening for a long time in Britain regarding ADD / ADHD and
indeed, other childhood disorders. Trouble is, rather than
embracing this knowledge our UK professionals would rather bury
their heads in the sand and never admit that parents know more
about their children's conditions than they do!

Dear Gail
I'm writing a book with Dr Jacqueline Stordy ex University of Surrey
with regard to the benefits of supplementation with long chain
polyunsaturated fatty acids. I'm wondering if you and your
subscribers might have any stories to relate? Regards M.N

Dear Gail,
As a parent of an ADHD boy now 13. My greatest help has been
what we call the "positive book". In it at night we right down
something positive our son did that day. It helps him to end the
day on a positive note and it helps us to focus on the positives
instead of those negatives that are so obvious. If this helps
anyone, please pass it on. Thank you. Jane

"Special Needs Books & Resources for Parents and Professionals"

I received a regular mailing from one of our UK publishers which
specialises in books about special needs / psychology / children /
education etc today. The books they publish are absolutely the kind
parents such as ourselves and professionals who look after our
children should be reading.

This got me to thinking about putting out an occasional bulletin
featuring new book releases, and other general resources, which
would be of interest to readership of the Gazette. Therefore
"Special Needs Books & Resources for Parents and Professionals"
(SNBRPP) newsletter will feature reviews of books about Special
Needs / Psychology / Children / Education / Parenting etc. (and
other resources) of interest to the parents of children with special
needs and the professionals who work with them. The Bulletin would
like to feature book and product reviews from YOU, THE READER,
the details we can then pass onto other parents / professionals.

Subjects which will be covered include ADD / ADHD, Asperger
Syndrome, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, General Special Needs,
Education, Psychotherapy, Social and Community Issues, Child
Psychiatry, Medication, Natural Alternatives, Behavioural
Strategies, Childhood Syndromes & Disorders, Parenting, etc.

Published around every 4 - 6 weeks, Special Needs Books &
Resources for Parents and Professionals is a 'must read' for those
who want to keep abreast with all the latest publications and
educational products available. We welcome all parents of children
with Special Needs and professionals from Education, Psychology,
Psychiatry, Social Work, Paediatrics etc.

HUMOUR

Dear Mrs Miller ......
Your local MP, has forwarded your details to us regarding your
current situation. We would like you to attend one of our social
functions at The House Of Commons, London. You are allowed
to bring guests. RSVP......

..... Later that week

PRESS RELEASE !!!!!!! London Evening Standard

".........It was reported today that The House Of Commons was
brought to a standstill by a 13 year old boy who gained access to
the computer system and reprogrammed it to blow up all of London
unless his demands were met. He also managed to break into the
canteen where he ate the whole week's Swiss roll supplies and drank
the soft drinks cabinet dry before proceeding to dismantle the coffee
making equipment to reconfigure into an Atom bomb.

Ministers ran for cover as the boy ran amok through the corridors
of power, screaming expletives, banging on doors, and generally
directing his anger at anyone who was unfortunate enough to get
in his way, especially members of catering staff. (British mums will
understand). He had strapped to his belt a can of white spirit, a laser
pen, a number of batteries of varying voltage, a large selection of
broken watches, clocks, torches, circuit boards and electrical
equipment, and a kitchen carving knife which he has apparently
been threatening to use recently.

PT17 and specialist firearms units of the Anti-Terrorist Squad have
surrounded the building and are involved in delicate negotiations with
the boy and 3 hostages who are thought to be a Mr and Mrs Miller,
the boy's parents, and his younger sister.

People who know the boy have given the following quotes:

His GP "I have nothing to say ...... AS USUAL!"

His Health Visitor (1987 - 1982) "I thought it was just a phase he
would grow out of"

His Psychiatrist, who the boy was referred to in both 1993 and
1997, "I put all this down to bad parenting and a lack of consistent
boundary setting .... and I stick to this".

The boy's most recent paediatrician, "I cannot prescribe the
appropriate medication .......... I have never prescribed it before".

Bystanders, looked on amazed, and one said "It was crazy. The noise
was just tremendous! It was as if world war three had started....
terrifying!

Updates on this story will be brought to you, every hour, on the
hour." The London Evening Standard
