Among early AA authors, Father Ralph Pfau
(the Father John Doe of the Golden Books)
was a strong supporter of Matt Talbot as an
example of how a spiritual triumph over
alcoholism could be accomplished.
William D. Silkworth, M.D. (1873-1951) also
encouraged the formation of Matt Talbot
groups in Catholic parish churches in a
talk he gave which was published in the
National Clergy Conference on Alcoholism's
Blue Book: "The Prevention of Alcoholism:
A Challenge to the Catholic Clergy." This
