Two Shots
A drunk goes in a bar and asks for a shot of Jim Beam. The
bartender pours it and the drunk pushes it aside and asks
for another shot of Jim Beam. The bartender pours it and
the drunk drinks it. The bartender says, "I watched what you
did and I don't understand why you pushed the first one away
and drank the second one!" The drunk stated," I've been going

The Big Rocks
One day an expert in time management was speaking to a group of
business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration
those students will never forget. As he stood in front of the group
of high powered overachievers he said, "Okay, time for a quiz."
Then he pulled out a one-gallon, wide-mouthed Mason jar and set
it on the table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen
fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into
the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks
would fit inside, he asked, "Is this jar full?"
Everyone in the class said, "Yes."
Then he said, "Really?" He reached under the table and pulled
out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook
the jar causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the
space between the big rocks.
Then he asked the group once more, "Is the jar full?"
By this time the class was on to him. "Probably not," one of
them answered.
"Good!" he replied. He reached under the table and brought out
a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it
went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel.
Once more he asked the question, "Is this jar full?"
No!" the class shouted.
Once again he said, "Good."
Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until
the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and
asked, "What is the point of this illustration?"
One eager beaver raised his hand and said, "The point is, no
matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can
always fit some more things in it!"
"No," the speaker replied, "that's not the point. The truth
this illustration teaches us i s: If you don't put the big rocks in
first, you'll never get them in at all."
What are the 'big rocks' in your life?
Author Unknown
The big rocks in my life are not using no matter what, making

Just For Today
November 11 From surrender to acceptance
"We surrender quietly and let the God of our understanding
take care of us." Basic Text p. 26
Surrender and acceptance are like infatuation and love.
Infatuation begins when we encounter someone special.
Infatuation requires nothing but the acknowledgement of
the object of our infatuation. For infatuation to become love,
however, requires a great deal of effort. That initial
connection must be slowly, patiently nurtured into a lasting,
durable bond.
It's the same with surrender and acceptance. We surrender
when we acknowledge our powerlessness. Slowly, we come
to believe that a Power greater than ourselves can give us the
care we need. Surrender turns to acceptance when we let this
Power into our lives. We examine ourselves and let our God
see us as we are. Having allowed the God of our understanding
access to the depths of ourselves, we accept more of God's care.
We ask this Power to relieve us of our shortcomings and help
us amend the wrongs we've done. Then, we embark on a new
way of life, improving our conscious contact and accepting our
Higher Power's continuing care, guidance, and strength.
Surrender, like infatuation, can be the beginning of a lifelong
relationship. To turn surrender into acceptance, however, we
must let the God of our understanding take care of us each day.
Just for today: My recovery is more than infatuation. I have
surrendered.

Focusing and Listening
There is a direct linkage among self-examination, meditation,
and prayer. Taken separately, these practices can bring much
relief and benefit.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 98
If I do my self-examination first, then surely, I'll have enough
humility to pray and meditate -- because I'll see and feel my
need for them. Some wish to begin and end with prayer, leaving
the self-examination and meditation to take place in between,
whereas others start with meditation, listening for advice from God
about their still hidden or unacknowledged defects. Still others
engage in written and verbal work on their defects, ending with a
prayer of praise and thanksgiving. These three -- self-examination,
meditation and prayer -- form a circle, without a beginning or an
end. No matter where, or how, I start, I eventually arrive at my
destination: a better life.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden / November 11th
A.A. Thought for the Day
When I think of all who have gone before me, I realize
that I am only one, not very important, person. What
happens to me is not so very important after all. And
A.A. has taught me to be more outgoing, to seek
friendship by going at least halfway, to have a sincere
desire to help. I have more self-respect now that I have
less sensitiveness. I have found that the only way to live
comfortably with myself is to take a real interest in others.
Do I realize that I am not so important after all?
Meditation for the Day
As you look back over your life, it is not too difficult to
believe that what you went through was for a purpose, to
prepare you for some valuable work in life. Everything in
your life may well have been planned by God to make you
of some use in the world. Each person's life is like the
pattern of a mosaic. Each thing that happened to you is
like one tiny stone in the mosaic, and each tiny stone fits
into the perfected pattern of the mosaic of your life,
which has been designed by God.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may not need to see the whole design of my
life. I pray that I may trust the Designer.

NOVEMBER 11
You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie ©
Discipline
Children need discipline to feel secure; so do adults.
Discipline means understanding there are logical consequences
to our behavior. Discipline means taking responsibility for our
behavior and the consequences.
Discipline means learning to wait for what we want.
Discipline means being willing to work for and toward what we
want.
Discipline means learning and practicing new behaviors.
Discipline means being where we need to be, when we need to
be there, despite our feelings.
Discipline is the day to day performing of tasks, whether these
are recovery behaviors or washing the dishes.
Discipline involves trusting that our goals will be reached though
we cannot see them.
Discipline can be grueling. We may feel afraid, confused, and
uncertain. Later, we will see the purpose. But this clarity of sight
usually does not come during the time of discipline. We may not
even believe we're moving forward.
But we are.
The task at hand during times of discipline is simple: listen, trust,
and obey.
Higher Power, help me learn to surrender to discipline. Help me
be grateful that You care enough about me to allow these times
of discipline and learning in my life. Help me know that as a
result of discipline and learning, something important will have
been worked out in me.

Be The Lighthouse ...
Not The Rescue Boat
In our zest for evolving beyond the current reality, and our very
sincere desire to assist everyone on this journey, we often lose
sight of some very Universal truths. Each of us choose our own
life experience. And each of us make these choices based upon
what we need in order to learn or achieve so that we might take
our personal steps in Soul evolution.
Love clouds many issues, but it is necessary for each of us to
realize not only the infinite Soul of self, but also the infinite Soul
of all others. There are many times during this process that each
of us will falter, will feel enormous pain, and may even lose our
way.
Where there is love there is the natural instinct to rescue. But
at times we must resist that instinct. There may be those who
gasp in dismay at my words. Is it love to stand aside and allow
a loved one to suffer? Is it love when we do not race down into
the trenches to pull our friend out of the mud? Yes . there are
times when taking no action is love.
If you, as a Soul, need to experience a period of great turmoil,
a turmoil that will force you into the depths of yourself to find
your own answers, a friend would be empowering you by
standing beside you and supporting you and loving you - but
not rescuing you.
If you take the hand of a friend and pull them out of the mire
they've created for themselves, you have robbed them of an
opportunity. By remaining in the mire, they will find strength.
They will find personal power. They will learn to trust
themselves, to turn to their own inner voice. Please understand
that if you see a loved one in physical danger, or in harm's way
to the degree that intervention is called for, do not hesitate.
Emotional detachment, something each seeker must learn, calls
for a delicate balance of offering support, serving humanity, and
offering your belief in a person to the degree that they realize
you believe they can rise above all circumstances. As we watch
the daily chaos and suffering on Earth it is difficult to believe that
we are not victims. But we are not.
Emotional detachment allows for a different perspective when
evaluating the reality we, as a human society, are creating. When
we accept and then begin to understand that our creations, what
we experience daily, are created from a base, a foundation, that
lies within us, we begin to understand how to create different
experiences.
To rescue someone from his or her own creation/experience is
to rob them of the opportunity to understand why they are
creating the experience they are creating. Our experiences are
the gifts we receive from ourselves, with the intention of out-
picturing what resides within us.
By taking the deep internal beliefs that we carry, the spirit
within us creates an external picture/experience. This creation
is a mirror that shows us what foundation we are creating from.
If the foundation is fear, doubt, pain, our external world will
reflect this foundation back to us. Because all creation must
have a foundation on which to build, Universal Law dictates
that the foundation must be within us for the simple reason that
like attracts like.
The greatest gift we can give each other and ourselves is the
gift of allowing our spirit to express, via our external
experiences, the truths that reside within us and within our
personal energy fields. By doing so, we bring to our attention
deep, unhealed wounds and/or beliefs, whether they be
from this lifetime or from the past.
As we work through our experiences, gaining understanding,
conquering fear and pain, we heal that which causes us to
create pain and suffering. As we heal pain and suffering, we
give ourselves the very real possibility of creating a world based
on joy and Soul-wisdom.

The Rainbow Bridge Return
The little dog arrived at the Rainbow Bridge , and a pack of dogs
rushed up to greet him. He braced himself, expecting a fight,
but this was the first pack that wagged their tails and kissed him
instead of attacking him.
It was beautiful here, and everyone was nice to him. None of
them had been born in a puppy mill, like he had, and used for
dog-bait fighting and left to die in a shelter because he was a
mix-breed battle-scarred cur and wasn't cute. They explained
why they were waiting... for their humans who loved them.
"What is love?" he asked, and God let him go back to earth,
and find out.
Warm, and dark, he squeezed in with the others and waited for
the day to be born. Scared, he held back as long as he could,
but finally got dragged out, by his hind feet. Hands without fur
held him gently and rubbed him dry and opened his mouth and
guided him to a warm nipple with milk. He didn't get a good hold
on it, because one of his big fat brothers pushed him aside. The
human hand moved the other puppy to another nipple and held
his body, so he could drink.
"Ahhh, that's better, " he thought, and drank until his jaws
got tired and he curled up to sleep next to his warm hairy
mother. "I remember this," he mused... "Too bad I'll have to
grow up to be hit, left out in the cold and rain, and used for
dog-bait fighting, and die as an unclaimed rescue dog. I
remember what it's like, being a dog." he thought sadly.
That night, he crawled up to his mother and tried to nurse, but
he kept getting pushed off to the side. When they were full,
the big brothers and sisters got their bottoms cleaned and he
finally latched on to a nipple, but the human hands weren't there
to hold him up, and there wasn't any milk in any of the nipples,
anyway. He was weak and so tiny. It was even hard to
stay upright, and he fell over on his back and couldn't right
himself.
So he began to cry, and suddenly the human hands were there,
holding him up and putting a rubber thing in his mouth. It didn't
taste or feel like mother, but it was warm and made the ache in
his tummy go away.
He was having trouble breathing ... His lungs weren't fully
developed, because he had waited too long to join the others in
the womb, as he took one last romp at the Rainbow Bridge.
He could feel the heartbeat of the human, who had laid him
on her chest and covered him with a soft cloth, keeping him
warm, and soothing his boney body with gentle circling touches.
He kept thinking of his new friends who had been so nice to him
at the bridge and asked God if he could go back.
God said "Yes, but not just yet. You wanted to experience Love."
So for several hours (seemed like days but it was dark and he
couldn't tell what time it was), the human supplemented his
feeding and let him experience the warmth of his mother's
body and tongue, and the pile of warm soft littermates. He got
weaker, and the human held him more often, leaving the
littermates to sleep in a pile while he got carressed, kissed,
and got to listen to the heartbeat which was strong and loving.
Finally God came back and asked, "are you ready to come back
to the Rainbow Bridge ?"
"Yes, he responded," with a little sorrow, because the human
didn't want to let him go, and was crying.
He pushed the air out of his lungs and floated back to the Rainbow
Bridge and looked back at the human, who was still crying and
holding the limp body that he had borrowed for his trip.
"Thank you, God," he said. "Love is beautiful, and I will wait near
the Bridge and let the human know, when she arrives, that I loved
her, too."

Heal Your Hurts
Heal your hurts.
Don't lug them around like a sack of potatoes
or bring them out for show-and-tell
when you need to explain away a bad behavior or an unsettling
mistake.
Revisit the scars on your heart,
resolve to remove each one of them
and go about getting the work done.
Without resolution, you remember the original injury
and relive the pain, time and time again.
Old hurts resurface and add scar tissue to the afflicted areas.
The next time a wound opens itself up
and spills its scalding contents on your tender feelings,
don't chase it back down inside of you.
Cup it gently in your hands, kiss it good bye and release it.
Heal your hurts, one pain at a time.
