Graveyards and Guilt Trips

Driving slowly, talking in hushed tones
Trying not to disturb the dead
We wound around the upright stones
Remembering what he said.

“Turning left, go up a short distance,
Then look, it will be on your right”
“There it is!” Did I feel a resistance
To be in the midst of death’s quiet?

God’s presence admonished my spirit
They have been laid here to rest!
Your spirit returns to me, don’t fear it
Death releases you to me to be blest.

“My moral inventory will be pages thick.
Why should I recall my past identity?”
They said “not until you’re ready” I felt sick
Yet I longed to find peace and serenity.

“Through the 12-Steps I’ve started to live again.
I’ll go from here, forget my past wrong.”
Yet memory of the past lies buried deep within.
To admit my faults is to again become strong.

My Higher Power admonishes my reluctant spirit
Admit wrongs, your inner being must find rest!
Giving our past to God brings peace, don’t fear it.
And by making amends we can be truly blessed.

Doing the 4th and 5th steps is sometimes scary
Just as approaching the end of our days
Yet when our will and our lives are His to carry
In life, or in death, He’ll direct our ways.

Just for Today
July 9 We Do Recover!

"....the time has come when that tired old lie, 'Once an addict,
always an addict,' will no longer be tolerated by either society
or the addict himself. We do recover" Basic Text, p.86

`From time to time, we hear speakers share that they don't really
understand spiritual principles yet. They tell us that if we knew what
went on in their minds, we'd be amazed at how insane they still are.
They tell us that the longer they're clean, the less they know about
anything. In the next breath, these same speakers tell us about the
profound changes recovery has made in their lives. They have
moved from complete despair to unfailing hope, from uncontrollable
drug use to total abstinence, from chronic unmanageability to
responsibility through working the Twelve Steps of Narcotics
Anonymous. Which story is true? Do we or don't we recover?

We may think we demonstrate humility or gratitude by
underplaying the change that recovery has brought to our lives.
True, we do injustice to the program when we take credit for this
miracle ourselves. But we do an equal injustice-to ourselves
and to those we share with-when we don't acknowledge this
miracle's magnitude.

We do recover. If we have trouble seeing the miracle of recovery,
we'd better look again. Recovery is alive and at work in Narcotics
Anonymous - in our oldtimers, in the newcomers flooding our
meetings, and most of all in ourselves. All we have to do is open
our eyes.

Just for today: I will acknowledge the miracle of my recovery and be
grateful that I've found it. pg. 199

A Two-Way Street

If we ask, God will certainly forgive our derelictions. But in no case
does He render us white as snow and keep us that way without our
cooperation.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 65

When I prayed, I used to omit a lot of things for which I needed to be
forgiven. I thought that if I didn't mention those things to God, He
would
never know about them. I did not know that if I had just forgiven myself
for some of my past deeds, God would forgive me also. I was always
taught to prepare for the journey through life, never realizing until I
came to A.A. when I honestly became willing to be taught forgiveness
and forgiving that life itself is the journey. The journey of life is
a very
happy one, as long as I am willing to accept change and responsibility.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ July 9th

A.A. Thought for the Day

Disillusionment and spiritual confusion mark our age. Many of
us have cast aside old ideas without acquiring new ones. Many
men and women are creeping through life on their hands and
knees, merely because they refuse to rely on any power but
themselves. Many of them feel that they are being brave and
independent, but actually they are only courting disaster.
Anxiety and the inferiority complex have become the greatest
of all modem plagues. In A.A. we have the answer to these ills.
Have I ceased to rely on myself only?

Meditation for the Day

Disillusionment and doubt spoil life. The doubting ones are the
disillusioned ones. When you are in doubt, you are on the fence.
You are not going anywhere. Doubt poisons all action. "Well, I
don't know"---so you don't do anything. You should meet life
with a "Yes," an affirmative attitude. There is good in the world
and we can follow that good. There is power available to help us
to do the right thing; therefore we will accept that power. There
are miracles of change in people's lives; therefore we will accept
those miracles as evidence of God's power.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I will not be paralyzed by doubt. I pray that I may
go along on the venture of faith.

Today's Thought
JULY 09
You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie ©

Overspending and Underspending

I used to beat my husband to death with my credit card. It made
me feel like I had some control, some way to get even with him.
--Anonymous

I spent ten years buying everything for myself at garage sales.
I didn't even buy myself a new pair of shoes. The entire time I was
depriving myself, my husband was gambling, speculating on risky
business deals, and doing whatever he wanted with money. I
learned that when I made a decision that I deserved to have the
things I wanted, and made a decision to buy something I wanted,
there was enough money to do it. It wasn't about being frugal; it
was about depriving myself, and being a martyr.
--Anonymous

Compulsive buying or overspending may give us a temporary
feeling of power or satisfaction, but like other out of control
behaviors, it has predictable negative consequences.

Underspending can leave us feeling victimized too.

There is a difference between responsible spending and
martyred deprivation. There is a difference between treating
ourselves well financially and overspending. We can learn to
discern that difference. We can develop responsible spending
habits that reflect high self-esteem and love for ourselves.

Today, I will strive for balance in my spending habits. If I am
overspending, I will stop and deal with what's going on inside
me. If I am under spending or depriving myself, I will ask myself
if that's necessary and what I want.

Beggars and Choosers
by Alan Cohen

Last fall my plane landed at the Miami Airport just before the airport
was
closed in the face of the oncoming Hurricane Irene. I went to my hotel,
hunkered down, and watched in awe as gale force winds bent palm trees
and
huge volumes of rain pelted the large windows. That evening the hotel
lost
electric power for eight hours, and I took the opportunity to light a
candle, meditate, and savor the power of nature surging around me. I
must
say that evening was one of my most pleasant hotel visits.

When the storm abated, hotel guests scrambled to rearrange their flight
schedules. As I stood at the public phone in the lobby, I heard a
fellow in
the booth next to me talking to an airline reservations agent. "I
realize
that beggars can't be choosers," he pleaded, "but is there any chance
you
can get me on this flight?"

His words reverberated in my mind: Beggars can't be choosers. It is
true. If
you think you are a beggar, undeserving of the good things in life,
required
to earn your right to be happy or suffer to get what you want, you
certainly
are not in a position of choice. But if you recognize that you are a
co-creator with God, literally an expression of a God Who brings
beauty and
joy to life and to you, through you, begging becomes meaningless,
utterly
contradictory to who we are and the way we were born to live.

Here we stand at the threshold of the new millennium, with many choices
before us. If we believe we must grovel, plead, or struggle to
manifest our
dreams, these choices can seem overwhelming, even frightening. But if we
realize that every choice before us represents the universe inviting
us to
remember who we really are and what we really want, and then find the
courage to claim it, the process of choosing becomes exciting - even
exhilarating.

To choose is to empower. Every time you say "yes" to one path and "no"
to
another, life rushes to support you in your decision. Often it does not
matter so much what we choose, but that we do choose. Many
declarations from
the Bible echo this wisdom: "God spews the lukewarm from His
mouth" (not the
most romantic image, but effective); "let your 'yes' be a 'yes,' and
your
'no' be a 'no'; all else is of the devil" (meaning that when we live
with
half-heartedness or ambiguity, we lose our ability to act
effectively); in
The Gospel According to Thomas we are told, "If you bring forth what is
within you, it will heal you; if you do not bring forth what is within
you,
it will kill you." Modern pundits have described the process thus:
"Throw
your heart over the fence, and your body will follow." "Boldness has
genius,
power, and magic in it." And, "if you sit in the middle of the road, you
will get run over by traffic from both sides."

Years ago I spent a day in New York City with a group of new age
friends.
After our outing, we were driving toward the George Washington Bridge,
trying to decide if we wanted to go home or see a movie. "What do you
guys
want to do?" asked the driver. "I need to know which road to take."

"I am okay either way", one fellow announced. Another echoed, "I am not
attached". My response was, "I will go with the flow"; another
reported, "I
am easy". At that point the driver applied the brakes and pulled the car
onto the shoulder of the road. He turned toward the back seat and with
an
air of authority announced, "Okay, all of you new age flakos, this is
one of
those times when everyone is going to have to tell the truth and let the
group know what you really want - or else we are going nowhere."

The rest of us looked at each other sheepishly. Then one fellow spoke,
"I'd
rather go home." "Yes, me too", said another. "I'm not really in the
mood
for a movie", I admitted. "Yeah, let's just keep going", the last fellow
suggest.

"Thank you," the driver replied smugly, "Now we can go home."

We all get to go home when we make strong choices. Thoreau advised, "Go
confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have
imagined." And visionary William James offered a powerful formula for
following through on any important life choice: 1. Be bold. 2. Begin
now. 3.
No exceptions.

If the new millennium is going to be anything, it will be what we make
it.
We will make it magnificent, not by begging, but by choosing. As Peter
Drucker wisely noted, "The best way to predict the future is to create
it."

Traveling in Faith

It is the time of year when travel is at its highest peak as
vacations
are taken all over the world. Familiar routines are temporarily left
behind in experiencing new adventures, perhaps sweet reunions with
loved ones, family or friends - as well as quenching our adventurous
thirst to discover more of the beautiful world God created for us to
enjoy.

Though there may be momentary feelings of apprehension in departing
from the familiar, the motivation that urges us to venture forth is our
faith that a Divine Presence is with us at all times and we are safe and
secure wherever the roads may lead us. What a pleasurable delight to
be afforded the opportunity to refresh, renew, and reinvigorate our
spirit
in absorbing the sights and aromas of our world!
Of course, some of us are presently not in a position to physically
or
financially take time out. Do not be discourages! You see, there are
also
inner journeys to partake of. Digest the beautiful words of the Tao Te
Ching: "You can see the whole world without leaving your room. You can
see the universe without even looking out your window. In fact, it is
often true that the farther one travels the less one sees. By looking
inside himself, the wise man sees with his heart and his mind, and his
heart and his mind see everywhere."

AFFIRM
Whether I travel inwardly or outwardly, I recognize that every day is
the
beginning of a new journey. I allow myself to enjoy every moment
thoroughly.

Footsteps

I walked upon the shores of forever
again last night in my dreams
It's so cool and peaceful there
and no earthly concerns pursue me
These sands of time are so soft and inviting
and my impressions always feel brand new
It's a place of wonder and possibilities
unfettered from fears and doubts
I feel so natural, alive, and at home
as I listen to the surf rolling in
It's a magical and mystical harmony
which seems in tune with the heavens
And quite often I become mesmerized
by the incredible beauty of the music
Being sung by the stars and the moon
as they gracefully waltz across the sky
It is a time of healing and renewal
as they caress my heart and soul
And sometimes I hear them whisper
that we were all born from the same light
And I am reminded that it matters not
the size of the footprints I might leave behind
But that I realize the far more important lesson
of learning to walk with love and understanding

Healing From Trauma
By Judy Shepps Battle

Crashing to the surface
fear/ panic/ nausea rises
scared/ hurt/ wanting explanation
wanting to go away
wanting not wanting to leave

I hear you my youngest self
hear your shock and hurt
feel ancient desire and paralysis
still see invading monsters
still simmer inner rage
still call out to yesterdays captors
Begone!

Lil Jude, I need to tell you:

We have wings now
to fly beyond the present
We have feet now
to walk away from any abuser
We have powerful voice to say
No! ( without explaining )
No! ( without staying )
No! ( without apology )
We don't have to remain
where there is unending pain
Or explain
why we are not guilty
Or understand
whys lies sighs or
byes of our perpetrators
Or drink/drug/shrug the pain of
double-meaning hugs

Lil Jude
Our healing lies in not becoming them
Not begging one last time for recognition
Not scampering for scattered crumbs
Our healing is a sober surrender to the Infinite
a love story between all parts of self
a sharing with those of like spirit
a celebration of triumph
danced freely in April's warm sunshine
consciousness overflowing

Questions

Questions, questions,
They seem to mount.
Who is it, why is it,
How come it doesn't count.
We were once like you,
Confused by it all.
Then we heard the higher call.
We were meant,
To give it away.
Otherwise we would,
Not be able to stay.
Questions, questions,
You have a lot.
Believe us now,
Or believe us not.
We are all here,
To help you along.
Many of us sang,
That very song.
We have all been,
Where your at now.
We also had lots of questions,
Who, what and how.
Stay awhile we will show you,
A much better way.
What have you got,
To lose anyway.
