Today I know that with every in-breath
I am breathing in powerful healing energy.
And with every out-breath I am letting go.
I am letting go of all anxiety, all stress...all negativity
that is standing in the way of my feeling good about myself.

A New Life
I once looked at my life with a feeling of dread.
I felt I would be much better off dead.
Not wanting to wake up after closing my eyes.
But each morning I did, with unhappy surprise.
I felt I was clinging to the end of my rope.
I had no dreams, no promise, no hope.
The rest of my life, it seemed to appear,
Would be lived out in perpetual fear.
But one day I woke up with a new point of view.
What gave me this new outlook, I had no clue.
I knew there must be something better out there.
I had to reach out to someone, somewhere.
And when I reached out, broken and crying,
Someone said, "Hang in there, keep trying!"
I was told of a place that had the knack
Of helping people get their lives back on track.
I made myself go there, rather than keep on running,
And they embraced me and said, "Welcome, keep coming!"
These people came up and took my hand,
And the feeling I got I couldn't quite understand.
When I spoke of my pain, they said "Thanks for sharing!"
I knew then and there that this was real caring.
They said, "Honey, we know just how you feel.
You are not crazy and your feelings are real!"
I can't tell you how different my life has become.
I now know I'm important, I AM SOMEONE!

Just For Today
May 17 "Defects"
"We were entirely ready to have God remove all these
defects of character." Step Six
After taking the Fifth Step, many of us spend some time considering
"the exact nature of our wrongs" and the part they'd played in making
us who we were. What would our lives be like without, say, our
arrogance?
Sure, arrogance had kept us apart from our fellows, preventing us
from enjoying and learning from them. But arrogance had also served
us well, propping up our ego in the face of critically low self-esteem.
What advantage would be gained if our arrogance were removed, and
what support would we be left with?
With arrogance gone, we would be one step closer to being restored
to our proper place among others. We would become capable of
appreciating their company and their wisdom and their challenges as
their equals. Our support and guidance would come, if we chose, from
the care offered us by our Higher Power; "low self-esteem" would
cease to be an issue.
One by one, we examined our character defects this way, and found
them all defective—after all, that's why they're called defects. And
were we entirely ready to have God remove all of them? Yes.
Just for today: I will thoroughly consider all my defects of
character to discover whether I am ready to have the God of
my understanding remove them. pg. 143

Hold Back Nothing
The real tests of the situation are your own willingness to confide and
your full confidence in the one with whom you share your first accurate
self-survey. . . . Provided you hold back nothing, your sense of
relief
will mount from minute to minute. The dammed-up emotions of years
break out of their confinement, and miraculously vanish as soon as they
are exposed. As the pain subsides, a healing tranquility takes its
place.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 61-62
A tiny kernel of locked-in feelings began to unfold when I first
attended
A.A. meetings and self-knowledge then became a learning task for me.
This new self-understanding brought about a change in my responses
to life's situations. I realized I had the right to make choices in
my life,
and the inner dictatorship of habits slowly lost its grip.
I believe that if I seek God I can find a better way to live and I ask
Him daily to assist me in living a sober life.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ May 17th
A.A. Thought for the Day
A lot of well-meaning people treat alcoholics like the priest
and the Levite. They pass by on the other side by scorning
them and telling them what low people they are, with no
willpower. Whereas, they really have fallen for alcohol, in
the same way as the man in the story fell among robbers.
And the member of A.A. who is working with others is like
the Good Samaritan. Am I moved with compassion? Do I take
care of another alcoholic whenever I can?
Meditation for the Day
I must constantly live in preparation for something better to
come. All of life is a preparation for something better. I must
anticipate the morning to come. I must feet, in the night of
sorrow, that understanding joy that tells of confident
expectation of better things to come. "Sorrow may endure
for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." Know that God
has something better in store for you, as long as you are
making yourself ready for it. All your existence in this world
is a training for a better life to come.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that when life is over, I will return to an eternal,
space-less life with God. I pray that I may make this life a
preparation for a better life to come.

Boundaries
Sometimes, life and people seem to push and push. Because
we are so used to pain, we may tell ourselves it doesn't hurt.
Because we are so used to people controlling and manipulating
us, we may tell ourselves there is something wrong with us.
There's nothing wrong with us. Life is pushing and hurting to
get our attention. Sometimes, the pain and pushing are pointing
toward a lesson. The lesson may be that we've become too
controlling. Or maybe we're being pushed to own our power to
take care of ourselves. The issue is boundaries.
If something or somebody is pushing us to our limit, that's exactly
what's happening: we're being pushed to our limits. We can be
grateful for the lesson that's here to help us explore and set our
boundaries.
Today, I will give myself permission to set the limits I want and
need to set in my life.

Being Vulnerable
by Marie T. Russell
I remember, as a child, waiting for others to make the first step...
waiting for attention to be given to me, waiting for others to show
love or friendship. I was too "shy" to take the first step. I was
afraid of being rejected. So I built a persona that literally
broadcasted "I don't need you. I am very self-sufficient."
This attitude was even prevalent in my childhood. My mother once told
me that my first words were not "mommy" or "daddy", they were "I can
do it!" I now understand that this statement was my way of saying "I
don't need you!" It was my defense against the feeling that I was not
needed or wanted. So rather than be honest about my need to receive
attention and love, I built a wall that said "O.K. if you don't want
me...I'll show you! I don't need you either. I can do it all myself."
This has carried over to my "adult" life where I have demonstrated (or
so I thought) that I didn't need others. I could do it myself. Yet, I
discovered that living behind a glass wall can be lonely. You can see
the others out there, yet you somehow remain separated from them. They
also see you, but find it difficult to connect with you.
My belief was that no one had time for me. So what did I find on the
other side of my wall? Either other people who had no time for me
(just as I expected) or people who thought that I had no time for them
and thus left me alone.
You too may be living behind a wall that you have built. Your wall may
be called "I'm not good enough, so leave me alone" or "No one
understands me or loves me, so don't even try" or other such self-
defeating attitudinal walls.
These glass walls have a way of magnifying the negative. The world
seems like a terrible place on the other side. Yet whatever you see
through the wall is only the reflection of what you have been
projecting. If your wall is one of "I'm not good enough", perhaps what
people see on your side of the wall is a person who seems aloof and
not very friendly. Consequently, they stay away as you do not seem to
be welcoming any friendships.
Is there a way out of that predicament? Yes. We can start by letting
down our defenses, and making ourselves vulnerable by being willing to
trust others and ourselves. Affirm: "I am now open to give and receive
love. I feel love in me and around me." Repeat to yourself, much as
someone would repeat a mantra, "It is safe to give and receive love",
"It is o.k. to ask for what I want" and "It's perfectly alright to
show my feelings without knowing what the response will be".
This opening of the cocoon is an ongoing process. I find that, for me,
the important thing is to stay focused in the heart, to feel my heart
expanding and opening towards those around me. The fear of being
"thought a fool" still comes up now and then, yet, I am aware that
only by "risking" and showing my feelings will others feel safe in
opening their hearts and showing me theirs.
When two people are encased behind their respective walls, someone
needs to take the first step and step out from behind their defenses
so that communication and honesty can take place. Since I cannot ask
of others what I do not ask of myself, I take the first step and come
out from behind the wall of my fears. Will you join me, so we can play
together and celebrate life?
I invite you to abandon your defenses and to become, once again, as
vulnerable as a newborn child. Together we can do it! Don't wait for
others to make the first step... They may be waiting for you!

She also produced and hosted a weekly South Florida radio broadcast,
Inner Power, from 1992-1995 which focused on themes such as self-
esteem, personal growth, and well-being. Her articles focus on

creativity.

Looking Through Another
Through our daily exchange with others we can "re-discover"
our emotions and how to work with them as a result of our experiences.
In looking through the eyes of another, we see the reflections
of our own strengths and weaknesses, our triumphs and our shortcomings.
Could this also be a golden opportunity to develop the capacity to
demonstrate patience and strength as we listen to another and not judge?
Then as kindly as we can, ask what they intend to do about it?
Through this we learn and teach the virtues of patience, love and
responsibility...

The Perfect Heart (Parable)
One day a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming
that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley. A large
crowd gathered and they all admired his heart for it was perfect.
There was not a mark or a flaw in it. Yes, they all agreed it truly
was the most beautiful heart they had ever seen. The young man was
very proud and boasted more loudly about his beautiful heart.Suddenly,
an old man appeared at the front of the crowd and said “Why your heart
is not nearly as beautiful as mine.” The crowd and the young man
looked at the old man’s heart. It was beating strongly, but full of
scars, it had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces
put in, but they didn’t fit quite right and there were several jagged
edges. In fact, in some places there were deep gouges where whole
pieces were missing.
The people stared - how can he say his heart is more beautiful, they
thought? The young man looked at the old man’s heart and saw its state
and laughed. “You must be joking,” he said. “Compare your heart with
mine, mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars and tears.”
“Yes,” said the old man, “Yours is perfect looking but I would never
trade with you. You see, every scar represents a person to whom I have
given my love - I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them,
and often they give me a piece of their heart which fits into the
empty place in my heart, but because the pieces aren’t exact, I have
some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love
we shared. Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away, and the
other person hasn’t returned a piece of his heart to me. These are the
empty gouges — giving love is taking a chance.
Although these gouges are painful, they stay open, reminding me of the
love I have for these people too, and I hope someday they may return
and fill the space I have waiting. So now do you see what true beauty
is?”
The young man stood silently with tears running down his cheeks. He
walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect young and beautiful
heart, and ripped a piece out. He offered it to the old man with
trembling hands. The old man took his offering, placed it in his heart
and then took a piece from his old scarred heart and placed it in the
wound in the young man’s heart. It fit, but not perfectly, as there
were some jagged edges. The young man looked at his heart, not perfect
anymore but more beautiful than ever, since love from the old man’s
heart flowed into his. They embraced and walked away side by side.
How sad it must be to go through life with a whole untouched heart.
