A Faith in God
I have this need so deep inside
For many years alone I cried
This illness slowly killing me
Oh God, I wail please set me free;
I'm tired of being alone in here
It's just gotten worse year after year
I'm ready now, please take my hand
I need your strength to help me stand,
A miracle happened when I finally let go
A faith in a God, I'm no longer alone
I had to arrive, then had to believe,
I had to surrender, then He set me free.

Just For Today
October 4 Thirty-day wonder
"When we first begin to enjoy relief from our addiction, we run
the risk of assuming control of our lives again. We forget the
agony and pain that we have known." Basic Text p.48
Many of us have been "thirty-day wonders" We were
desperate and dying when we showed up at our first NA
meeting. We identified with the addicts we met there and the
message they shared. With their support, we were finally
able to stop using and catch a free breath. For the first time
in a long, long time, we felt at home. Overnight, our lives
were transformed; we walked, talked, ate, drank, slept, and
dreamed Narcotics Anonymous.
Then, Narcotics Anonymous lost its novelty. Meetings that
had been a thrill became monotonous. Our wonderful NA
friends became bores; their uplifting NA talk, drivel. When
our former friends called, inviting us back for some of the
old fun, we kissed our recovery goodbye.
Sooner or later, we made our way back to the rooms of
Narcotics Anonymous. Nothing had changed out there,
we'd discovered-not us, not our friends, not the drugs, not
anything. If anything, it had gotten worse than ever. True,
NA meetings may not be a laugh riot, and our NA friends
may not be spiritual giants. But there's a power in the
meetings, a common bond among the members, a life to
the program that we cant do without. Today, our recovery
is more than just a fad-it's a way of life. We're going to
practice living our program like our lives depend on it,
because they do.
Just for today: I'm no "thirty-day wonder" The NA way is my
way of life, and I'm here for the duration.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS p.59
I could not manage my life alone. I had tried that road and
failed. My "ultimate sin" dragged me down to the lowest level
I have ever reached and, unable even to function, I accepted
the fact that I desperately needed help. I stopped fighting
and surrendered entirely to God.
Only then did I start growing! God forgave me. A Higher
Power had to have saved me, because the doctors doubted
that I would survive. I have forgiven myself now and I enjoy
a freedom I have never before experienced. I've opened my
heart and mind to Him. The more I learn, the less I know --
a humbling fact -- but I sincerely want to keep growing. I
enjoy serenity, but only when I entrust my life totally to God.
As long as I am honest with myself and ask for His help, I can
maintain this rewarding existence.
Just for today, I strive to live His will for me -- soberly.
I thank God that today I can choose not to drink.
Today, life is beautiful!

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ October 4th
A.A. Thought for the Day
Am I critical of other members of A.A. or of new prospects?
Do I ever say about other members: "I don't think they're
sincere, I think they're bluffing, or I think they're taking
a few drinks on the quiet?" Do I realize that my doubtful
and skeptical attitude is hurting those members, if only in
my attitude toward them, which they cannot help sensing?
Do I say about new prospects: "They'll never make the
program," or do I say: "They'll only last a few months"? If
I take this attitude, I am unconsciously hurting those
prospects' chances. Is my attitude always constructive and
never destructive?
Meditation for the Day
To be attracted toward God and a better life, you must be
spirit-guided. There is wonderful illumination of thought given
to those who are spirit-guided. To those who are material-guided,
there is nothing in God or a finer life to appeal to them or
to attract them. But to those who are spirit-guided there is
strength and peace and calm to be found in communion with
an Unseen Lord. To those who believe in this God they cannot
see but whose power they can feel, life has a meaning and
purpose. They are children of the Unseen Lord, and all human
beings are their brothers and sisters.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may be spirit-guided. I pray that I may feel
God's presence and power in my life.

Faith and Money
Sometimes, there is not enough money to make ends meet,
much less afford any luxuries.
People may tell us to do a budget, and we chuckle. The
expenses we need to pay for survival surpass the income.
We look at the situation; shake our heads, and say, "No way."
Many of us have had to live through these situations. This
is not the time to panic; this is not the time to despair.
Panic and desperation will lead to bad judgment and desperate
moves. This is the time to substitute faith for fear. This is the time
to trust God to meet our needs.
Take life one day and one need at a time. Use your survival
skills positively. Know your possibilities are not limited by the
past or by your present circumstances.
Examine any blocks that might be stopping the flow of money
in your life. Do you have an attitude, an issue, a lesson that
might be yours to change or learn?
Maybe the lesson is a simple one of faith. In Biblical times, it
is said that Jesus walked on the water. It is said His followers
could, too, but the moment they let fear take over, they sank.
During financial hard times, we can learn to "walk on water"
with money issues. If we make out a budget, and there's not
enough money to survive and pay legitimate expenses, do
your best, then let go. Trust your Source to supply your needs.
If an emergency arises, and there is no cash to meet the need,
look beyond your wallet. Look to your Source. Claim a Divine
supply, an unlimited supply, for all that you need.
Do your part. Strive for an attitude of financial responsibility in
thought and action. Ask for Divine Wisdom. Listen to God's
leadings. Then let go of your fears and your need to control.
We know that money is a necessary part of being alive and
living; so does our Higher Power.
God, bring any blocks and barriers within me concerning
money to the surface. Help me take care of myself financially.
If money is tight, I will dispel fear and learn to "walk on water"
concerning finance issues. I will not use this attitude to justify
irresponsibility. I will do my part, including letting go of fear and
trusting you to do the rest.

Dancing with Life
by Richard Carlson
Human beings have essentially two modes or mind-sets that
we operate or live in, with, of course, some shades of gray in
between. We have what you might call a healthy mode, and
another, which you can think of as reactive.
When we are in our healthiest state of mind, we "dance" with
life. We're in the flow of things. We're patient, wise, thoughtful,
and kind. We make good, sound decisions. We treat others
with respect and compassion -- and we treat ourselves that way
too. We make adjustments when necessary, and are flexible
in our thinking. Reflect, for a moment, on your own life. Can
you recall times when you have remained -- even for a
moment -- in a healthy, calm state of mind, despite difficult
circumstances?
Our reactive state of mind is quite different. In fact, if you're
anything like me, there are probably times when you wonder
how the same person can respond (or react) so differently
to a remarkably similar set of facts. One moment we can
handle something really well, even when it's "big." But the
next moment we fly off the handle! In a reactive state of mind,
we are less patient. Instead of being effortless, our thinking
is difficult. We churn and struggle. We are quick-tempered
and judgmental. We are frustrated and hard on ourselves
and others. Our problem-solving skills are limited, as are
our perspective and vision.
It's helpful to notice and acknowledge the difference between
these two ways of being (or states of mind) because it gives
you a "home base" and a starting point; it gives you something
to work with. It's very comforting to know the power of your own
state of mind because, unlike so many other factors, it comes
from within you. You have some capacity to control it.
Sometimes it's hard to believe, but ultimately we are the source
of our own love. In the beautiful audiotape course To Love and
Be Loved by Stephen and Ondrea Levine (published by Sounds
True), the Levines spoke of a woman who said, "My mother
can't allow me to love her." They pointed out something that
took me some time to digest. In a very compassionate tone they
pointed out that, "Actually, she can't stop you from loving her."
Our healthiest state of mind is that strong. It's a state of mind
filled with love. When we are in it, we feel secure and at peace
-- to some extent regardless of what's going on around us. This
is our most natural state of mind.
Everyone gets reactive, and at times it seems we're always
that way. And there's nothing wrong with this, nor am I aware of
any way to completely eliminate it. But if you've ever felt the
peace of your mental well-being, then you know it's in you and
can be found again. Simply knowing that it's there is half the
battle. By acknowledging the existence of a healthy state of
mind, you can learn to trust it, and access it, more often. And
this is key: When you're in a healthy state of mind, you'll know
who to turn to, who your friends are, and what to do. That's not
a pep talk, it's the truth.
Ironically, the way to access your inner health and strength is
not by "trying," but by letting go. The idea is to clear our minds
and let go of our analytical thinking when it's getting the best
of us. When we do, and as we quiet down, a natural, orderly
flow of thoughts will begin to emerge, including insights on
what to do next. It's this quieter place where our deepest
wisdom exists.
You'll notice that when you are in your healthiest state of mind,
life will seem pretty manageable and effortless. The decisions
and actions you need to make will flow, as if you are dancing.
You will see right to the heart of the matter and you will act
accordingly. On the other hand, when you slip into a more
reactive state, you'll feel overwhelmed and stressed. The key
is, you'll feel the difference.
My dear friend and coauthor of Slowing Down to the Speed of
Life, Joe Bailey, equates our thinking to a walkie-talkie. He
says we are either on "talk" or "listen." The metaphor suggests
that we are either in a healthy state or a reactive one. And just
like a walkie-talkie, in order to shift from talk to listen, it's
necessary to know which mode you're in. But once you do,
all that's necessary is to let go of the button, and the shift
occurs automatically.
So it is when we're thinking. When we're reactive, churning,
and trying too hard to figure everything out, the key is to
recognize that we're doing so. Then, like silt settling in a
pond, we do nothing except ease off and wait. Relax and trust
that your wisdom will kick into gear. It requires no effort, but it
does require faith, humility, and patience. It requires faith
because you must trust that your wisdom and healthy
mind-set do in fact exist. It requires humility because it's often
hard to admit that effort is not the answer. Finally, it requires
patience because even though the process is simple, it's not
as easy as it sounds.
One thing is certain, however. If you can dance with it, making
the necessary adjustments along the way, you can and will
get through it. Give yourself plenty of time and space, and
remain compassionate toward yourself. There is a part of you
that is stronger than any of your problems.

7 SECRETS to a Great Life
by Kathy Gates
A great life doesn't happen by accident. A great life is the result
of allocating your time, energy, thoughts, and hard work towards
what you want your life to be. Stop setting yourself up for stress
and failure, and start setting up your life to support success and
ease. A great life is the result of using the 24/7 you get in a
creative and thoughtful way, instead of just what comes next.
Customize these "secrets" to fit your own needs and style,
and start creating your own great life today.
1. S-Simplify
A great life is the result of simplifying your life. People often
misinterpret what simplify means. It's not a way to remove work
from your life. When you focus on simplifying your life, you free
up time and energy for the work that you enjoy and the purpose
for which you are. In order to create a great life, you will have to
make room for it in yours first.
2. E-Effort
A great life is the result of your best effort. Creating a great life
requires that you make some adjustments. It may mean re-
evaluating how you spend your time, or choosing to spend your
money in a different way. It may mean looking for ways to spend
your energy that coincide with your definition of a great life. Life
will reward your best effort.
3. C-Create Priorities
A great life is the result of creating priorities. It's easy to spend
your days just responding to the next thing that gets your
attention, instead of intentionally using the time, energy, and
money you have in a way that's important to you. Focus on
removing the obstacles that get in the way of you making sure
you are honoring your priorities.
4. R-Reserves
A great life is the result of having reserves -- reserves of things,
time, space, energy, money. Having reserves means that you
have a lot more than you need -- not 6 months living expenses,
but 5 years worth; not 15 minutes of free time, but 1 day.
Reserves are important because they reduce the fear of
consequences, and allow you to make decisions based on
what you really want, instead of what the fear decides.
5. E-Eliminate Distractions
A great life is the result of eliminating distractions. Up to 75%
of your mental energy can be tied up in things that are draining
and distracting you. Eliminating distractions can be a difficult
concept to many people because they haven't really considered
that there is another way to live. Find ways to free up your mental
energy from the nagging distractions for the things that are really
important to you.
6. T-Thoughts
A great life is the result of controlling your thoughts so that you
accept and allow for the possibility that it can actually happen to
you. Your belief in the outcome will directly dictate how successful
you are. Motivated people have specific goals and look for ways
to achieve them. Believing there is a solution to the same old
problems you encounter year after year is vitally important to
creating a life that you love. Whatever you think and believe,
you create. Listen to what you're telling yourself, and adjust that
voice if you need to.
7. S-Start
A great life is the result of starting. There's the old saying that
everyone's familiar with: "A journey of a thousand miles begins
with a single step." In order to even move from the couch to the
refrigerator, you have to start. There's no better time to start
creating a better life than today. Don't wait for a raise, or until
the kids get older, or the weather is better. Today, right now, is
the right day to start to take a step in the direction of your heart's
desires. It's what you do TODAY that will make a difference in
your life tomorrow.

Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy you must
have somebody to divide it with.
-- Mark Twain
We share this planet that supports us. We share it with other living
creatures, each one offering a necessary ingredient that nurtures
and sustains the continuation of the whole. Every experience that
involves one of us, involves others who also need what the
experience may teach. We are not alone, ever. We are traveling
a path in concert with others whose needs are similar to our own.
We can expect to discover joyous occasions and will undoubtedly
be visited by grief in our travels. The latter will be eased by the
knowledge that others, too, have known grief. Joy, on the other
hand, is doubled in intensity when we acknowledge the
occasion -- giving birth to it -- and then celebrate it with others.
No day passes without giving us many occasions to shout for joy.
Too often, feeling alone and lonely, we close our eyes to the
wonders that could excite us. The most fruitful lesson we can
learn is that we have fellow travelers among whom joy abounds
and multiplies when shared.
Today I'll look for the joy in my life.
