In Memory of Patty Allen
Patty was a girl I came to know,
While I was in treatment at Ivanhoe.
She taught me what it means to care,
And her story is one I’d like to share.
In the group on her first day, were Lori, Kathy, Thad, and Ray.
Although none of them had ever met,
It became a day they wouldn’t forget.
They spent several days with each other,
Brother to sister, sister to brother.
Patty was nervous and shy at the very start,
But had something about her that touched your heart.
You couldn’t describe it but you could just feel,
That although she was hurting, she was ever so real.
As time went on and she became more at ease,
She would share some stories about her disease.
She’d been through the mill, with booze and dope,
But in her eyes was a glimmer of hope.
The group noticed her changing after a while,
As her face would light up with a beautiful smile.
She began wearing makeup and dressing real neat,
This girl wasn’t about to go down to defeat.
As the group kept changing, and problems were shared,
She would offer advice and you knew that she cared.
Her problems were minor from her point of view,
And all that mattered was if she could help you.
Patty died while in treatment, I’m sorry to say,
And we laid her to rest on the fifth of May.
The year was nineteen hundred and ninety seven,
That she walked through the gates of heaven.
I know she’s watching us from up above,
And sends us all her utmost love.
And Patty, dear, we just want you to know,
That the memory of you, will only help us to grow.

Just For Today
May 19 A Growth Inventory
"We review our past performance and our present behavior to
see what we want to keep and what we want to discard."
Basic Text, p. 29
As each day winds to a close, many of us reflect on the past
twenty-four hours and consider how we can live differently in the
future. It's easy for our thoughts to remain trapped in the mundane:
change the oil in the car, keep the living room clean, or empty the
litter box. Sometimes it takes a special effort to jog our thinking
out of the daily rut and onto a higher track.
One simple question can put us on the high road: What do we think
our Higher Power wants for us tomorrow? Maybe we need to improve
our flagging conscious contact with the God of our understanding.
Perhaps we've been uncomfortable in our job or our relationship,
holding on only out of fear. We might be hiding some troubling defect
of character, afraid to share it with our sponsor. The question is, in
what parts of our lives do we really want to grow?
As each day ends, we find it beneficial to take some moments to
spend time with our Higher Power. We can begin to reflect on what
will benefit our program of spiritual growth most in the coming day.
We think about the areas in which we have grown recently, and target
areas that still require work. What more fitting way to end the day?
Just for today: I will set aside some time at the end of the day
to commune with my Higher Power. I will review the past day,
meditating on what stands between me and my Higher Power's will
for my life. pg. 145

A RESTING PLACE
All of A.A.'s Twelve Steps ask us to go contrary to our natural desires . .
. they all deflate our egos. When it comes to ego deflation, few Steps are
harder to take than Five. But scarcely any Step is more necessary to
longtime sobriety and peace of mind than this one.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 55
After writing down my character defects, I was unwilling to talk about
them, and decided it was time to stop carrying this burden alone, I needed
to confess those defects to someone else. I had read -- and been told -- I
could not stay sober unless I did. Step Five provided me with a feeling of
belonging, with humility and serenity when I practiced it in my daily
living. It was important to admit my defects of character in the order
presented in Step Five: "to God, to ourselves and to another human
being." Admitting to God first paved the way for admission to myself and
to another person. As the taking of the Step is described, a feeling of
being at one with God and my fellow man brought me to a resting place where
I could prepare myself for the remaining Steps toward a full and meaningful
sobriety.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ May 19th
A.A. Thought for the Day
Fellowship is a big part of staying sober. The doctors
call it group therapy. We never go to an A.A. meeting
without taking something out of it. Sometimes we don't
feel like going to a meeting and we think of excuses for
not going. But we usually end up by going anyway and we
always get some lift out of every meeting. Meetings
are part of keeping sober. And we get more out of a
meeting if we try to contribute something to it. Am I
contributing my share at meetings?
Meditation for the Day
"He brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry
clay, and set my feet upon a rock and established my
goings." The first part, "He brought me up out of a
horrible pit," means that by turning to God and putting
my problems in His hands, I am able to overcome my sins
and temptations. "He set my feet upon a rock" means that
when I trust God in all things, I have true security. "He
established my goings" means that if I honestly try to
live the way God wants me to live, I will have God's
guidance in my daily living.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that my feet may be set upon a rock. I pray that
I may rely on God to guide my comings and goings.

Let Yourself Change & Grow
There are lots of hermit crabs in the tide pools
near my house.
They're interesting little creatures.
A hermit crab will find a shell that fits him,
put it on, and live in it.
After a while, he grows and the shell no longer fits,
so the crab scurries along the sea floor
and finds another shell to live in.
He crawls out of his first shell and into the shell
that fits his new needs.
This scene repeats itself again and again
throughout his life.
Learn a lesson from the hermit crabs.
Just because a decision was right for you yesterday,
doesn't mean it meets your needs today.
People grow. People change.
And sometimes we have to let our safe little places go,
in order to grow and change.
Are you holding on to something that doesn't work anymore,
just because it's safe and what you know?
It could be a behavior pattern-such as feeling victimized
in all your relationships or wearing yourself out
trying to control what you can't.
Thank the lessons, people,
and places of the past for all they've taught you.
Thank your survival behaviors for helping you cope.
There's nothing wrong with feeling comfortable and
safe-having lifetime friends and a career that serves us well.
But don't get so comfortable that you can't let go
and move on when it's time.
If the walls are too confining and limiting and you're feeling stuck and
bored, maybe it's time to get out and find a new shell.
There's another shell waiting that will fit you better,
but you can't move into it until you leave this one behind.
God, show me the behaviors, things, people,
and places that I've outgrown.
Then give me the faith to let go.

Affirmation Power
by Louise L. Hay
Affirmations are really anything that we say or think. Our thoughts create
our feelings, beliefs, and experiences. Too often they are negative. we say,
"I don't want this in my life" or "I don't want to be sick anymore" or "I
hate my job". If we want to change or manifest something in our lives, we
must state what we do want. We must affirm that we are willing to see
ourselves or our lives in a different perspective. Thus, we can change our
experiences by first changing our thoughts.
When you first start using an affirmation, it may not seem true for you. If
it were already true, you would not need the affirmation. For example, think
of what happens when you plant a seed. First it germinates, then it sprouts
roots, and then it pokes its first shoot up through the ground. It takes
time to go from a seed to a full-grown plant. And so it is with
affirmations. Be gentle and patient with yourself.
You may also experience some doubt as to whether you are doing the
affirmations correctly or even whether the affirmations are doing any good
at all. This is perfectly normal. You see, the subconscious mind is like a
filing cabinet - all the thoughts, words, and experiences you have had since
birth get filed away like messages. Think of your mind as having a team of
couriers who grab the messages, look at them, and put them in the
appropriate files. Perhaps you have been building up files for years with
messages such as: I'm not good enough," "I'm not smart enough to do that,"
or "Why Bother?" The subconscious gets absolutely buried under these files.
Suddenly, when the couriers begin seeing messages that say, "I'm wonderful
and I love myself", they respond with, "What is this? Where do we file this?
We've never seen this message before."
That's when they call in "Doubt". Doubt picks up the message and says to
you, "Hey, look at this. We have no place to file this one - it must be a
mistake." You can either say to Doubt, "Oh, you re right. 'I'm terrible. I'm
not good. Sorry, I made a mistake", and go back to your old way of thinking.
Or, you can say to Doubt, "Thank you for sharing, but this is the new
message. Set up a new file because there are going to be lots of these
coming through." By doing so, over time you will change your thinking and
create a new reality for yourself. Remember, you are in charge.
Reinforce your new, positive affirmations in any way you can: in your
thoughts, your conversations with yourself and others, and by writing them
down in this journal, which I created to inspire you on your path to
personal growth and healing. You may choose to use the affirmations on each
page as a springboard to write your own. Once you find affirmations that are
right for you, you may want to put them up on your mirror, on your desk, or
on your car dashboard.
Remember:
One thought does not mean much, but thoughts that we think over and over are
like drops of water - at first there are just a few, and then after a while
you've created a pool, and then a lake, and then an ocean. If our thinking
is negative, we can drown in a sea of negativity; if its positive, we can
float on the ocean of life.

Yet We Pray
We have the resources and the channels
to feed every person on the planet,
yet we pray for an end to starvation.
We have the supplies and the means to
house and clothe each citizen on earth,
yet we pray for an end to poverty.
We have the ability to be friends and
companions to the elderly and the infirm,
yet we pray for an end to their loneliness.
We have the qualified competence
to mentor and guide the young,
yet we pray for the lost and misguided among them.
We have within us, the capacity to love one another,
yet we pray for an end to hatred.
We have the power to transform the world,
yet we pray for change.
We have been given so much,
yet we use so little of it.
Let us pray for the things we need,
not for that, which we already have.
Let our legacy be one of action, a generation
of doers, who prayed deeply and in earnest for
the strength, the courage, the determination and
the conviction, to use our God-given gifts - justly.

Know
Know that more is possible than you
think if you really want and believe.
Know that your eyes can never see
as clearly as your heart
Know that wisdom is in hearing
and believing your own voice
Know that giving is never losing
and that giving freely is the semicircle
that completes itself in receiving
Know that to want nothing is as
selfish as to give nothing
Know that sharing cannot be true
unless you keep enough for yourself
Know that no one can live your pain or joy
Know that no one can tell you who
you are and that friends can only
stand by while you make your discoveries
Know that help doesn't always appear
in the way you may expect or demand
Know that what you think you want
may be inferior to what you receive
Know that no matter who walks with
you no one can walk your journey for you
Know that often you may feel
you are walking alone
Know that you are never alone when
you know who you are

Simplify your life.
You do not need all the clutter you are holding on to.
Get rid of it now because it is stealing your energy.
The clutter in your life takes energy to maintain.
Start with the smallest things.
Clear away a little and you'll be amazed at the
vast amounts of energy it releases inside of you.
Incomplete things also tie up energy.
Look at all your unread books, and declare them complete.
Guilt -- let go of it, right now.
Keep around you only the things that give you energy.
