Probation Blues
I've turned over a new leaf, I'm happy to say,
There's peace and serenity in my life today.
I've cleaned up my house and shined my old shoes.
Just wish I could get rid of these probation blues!
No beer in my fridge, my mind is so clear,
Got close to my God and all I hold dear.
Then, soon as the time to report comes around,
I'm smiling inside, on my face there's a frown.
Not that it's so bad to go to that place,
There's only one thing that I call a disgrace,
That thing that they want you to do in a cup,
And with someone watching, I can't give it up.
I do not resent anything from my past,
But the DOC has me by the ass.
These things that I did, just wanted to get high,
Oh, the problems Ive had with that fourth DUI!
Just remember one thing, if you do drink and drive,
Although I killed no one and I'm still alive,
The misery you'll have if that's the life you choose,
Then we'll all be singing the probation blues!

Just For Today
November 4 Exchanging love
"...we give love because it was given so freely to us. New frontiers
are open to us as we learn how to love. Love can be the flow of
life energy from one person to another" Basic Text pp. 100-101
Love given, and love received, is the essence of life itself. It is the
universal common denominator, connecting us to those around us.
Addiction deprived us of that connection, locking us within ourselves.
The love we find in the NA program reopens the world to us. It unlocks
the cage of addiction which once imprisoned us. By receiving love from
other NA members, we find out-perhaps for the first time-what love is
and what it can do. We hear fellow members talk about the sharing of
love, and we sense the substance it lends to their lives.
We begin to suspect that, if giving and receiving love means so much to
others, maybe it can give meaning to our lives, too. We sense that we are
on the verge of a great discovery, yet we also sense that we won't fully
understand the meaning of love unless we give ours away. We try it, and
discover the missing connection between ourselves and the world. Today,
we realize that what they said was true: "We keep what we have only by
giving it away."
Just for today: Life is a new frontier for me, and the vehicle I will
use to explore it is love. I will give freely the love I have received.

A SPIRITUAL AXIOM
It is a spiritual axiom that every time we are disturbed, no matter what
the cause, there is something wrong with us.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 90
I never truly understood the Tenth Step's spiritual axiom until I had the
following experience. I was sitting in my bedroom, reading into the wee
hours, when suddenly I heard my dogs barking in the back yard. My
neighbors frown on this kind of disturbance so, with mixed feelings of
anger and shame, as well as fear of my neighbor's disapproval, I
immediately called in my dogs. Several weeks later the exact same
situation repeated itself but this time, because I was feeling more at
peace with myself, I was able to accept the situation -- dogs will bark --
and I calmly called in the dogs. Both incidents taught me that when a
person experiences nearly identical events and reacts two different ways,
then it is not the event which is of prime importance, but the person's
spiritual condition. Feelings come from inside, not from outward
circumstances. When my spiritual axiom is positive, I react positively.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden / November 4th
A.A. Thought For The Day
I can do things that I never did before. Liquor took away
my initiative and my ambition. I couldn't get up the steam
to start anything. I let things slide. When I was drunk, I
was too inert to even comb my hair. Now I can sit down and
do something. I can write letters that need to be written,
I can make telephone calls that should be made. I can work
in my garden. I can pursue my hobbies. I have the urge to
create something, that creative urge that was completely
stifled by alcohol. Have I recovered my initiative?
Meditation For The Day
"In Thy presence is fullness of joy. At Thy right hand are
pleasures forever." We cannot find true happiness by
looking for it. Seeking pleasure does not bring happiness
in the long run, only disillusionment. Do not seek to have
this fullness of joy by seeking pleasure. It cannot be done
that way. Happiness is a by-product of living the right kind
of life. True happiness comes as a result of living in all
respects the way you believe God wants you to live, with
regard to your self and to other people.
Prayer For The Day
I pray that I may not always seek pleasure as a goal. I
pray that I may be content with the happiness that comes
when I do the right thing.

Feeling Overwhelmed Is A Trap
Feeling overwhelmed is a trap,
a tricky one at that.
When we're overwhelmed, we see all that needs to be one and say,
That's too much. I can't do it.
So instead, I shall do nothing.
Feeling overwhelmed occurs when we say, I am already too busy so
I can't do that and now all is pressing in on me and I can't do anything.
And the acts that are ours to do keep piling up and pulling on us.
And we keep resisting.
And stress and pressure build up.
Feelings overwhelmed leads to feeling stuck, and both are in illusion.
How simple those things that overwhelm us actually become when we
release the feelings and return to the rhythm of our lives.
When we say, Yes, I need to make that phone call, do that task.
How simple the task becomes,
how simple life becomes.
What's bothering you that
needs to be done?
What's pulling on you?
What's causing you to feel overwhelmed and maybe stuck, too?
Make a list.
Put your list aside, and begin by taking one simple action.
Then watch as life unfolds.
One act at a time, one thing at a time, all that needs to be done will get done.
The stress will disappear,
and you'll feel back on track.
You'll be given the ability, power,
and guidance to do all that
is on your path to do.
Begin simply, quietly, by acknowledging feelings overwhelmed.
Denying the pull of life and its tasks doesn't remove stress;
it compounds it.
Surrendering to the simple truths,
even the simple truth of what we're
really feeling, will always set us free.

Headed in the Right Direction
by Alan Cohen
A dear young woman named Abby recently attended my Mastery Training in
Hawaii, and reported that her parents had sent her as a birthday present. At
the age of 17, Abby had been hospitalized for an eating disorder, force-fed
daily by loving attendants. She did not expect she would live long, let
alone ever feed herself again. Now, just four years later, she was taking
charge of her life and opening to receive love and support from people,
life, and God. While Abby’s illness had been painful, she had grown
immensely through facing it. She was mature far beyond her years, bright,
and beautiful.
At the end of the seminar I noticed that Abby had a tattoo of a
forward-pointing arrow on each of her feet. "What made you get those
tattoos?" I asked her. Abby smiled and answered, "They remind me that I am
always headed in the right direction."
Painful experiences are steppingstones to right direction. Rather than
considering them curses or crosses to bear, regard them as wake-up calls or
course corrections. While you may have gone through a difficult ordeal you
wish had never happened, the only thing worse may have been to go on as you
were.
A fellow came to my teacher Hilda Charlton and complained that he had been
ripped off by an auto mechanic. "The guy charged me $500 for poor work and
then refused to remedy it," he explained. "I had a bad feeling about this
mechanic before he started the work. Now I wish I had listened to it."
Hilda responded, "If I were offering you a week-long course on following
your intuition, and I guaranteed you that after this course you would be
better able to hear your inner guidance and more willing to follow it, would
you take the class?"
"Why, sure!" answered the fellow without hesitation.
"And if the tuition for the course was $500, would you pay it?"
"That would be a bargain."
"Then consider yourself lucky," Hilda told him. "You got the entire course
from your mechanic in one day."
Which direction is the right one for you? The one you are headed in now.
Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, you are in the perfect position to
discover your right next step. No matter what you do, you will receive
feedback from the universe about how what you are doing matches your true
intentions. If it feels good, you have learned, and if it feels bad, you
have learned. What you do is far less important than what you learn.
Everything you experience leads to waking up.
Trust is the key. A Course in Miracles tells us that trust is the bedrock of
the spiritual journey. The Course goes on to explain that "it takes great
learning to understand that all things, events, encounters and circumstances
are helpful." Everything serves. If you believe that an experience is
outside of the plan for your awakening, it is only because you have yet to
see how this piece fits into the puzzle. When the time is right, you will
recognize the Big Picture.
A Zen master noted, "Wherever I go, I keep finding myself." Ultimately,
there is nothing else to do. The world you see is a stage you have
constructed with your thoughts and everyone you meet is an actor you have
hired to play out the script you have written. And you scribed it in
brilliance. Every person and experience mirrors your beliefs about yourself
and life. Rather than trying to get rid of them, thank them for the
reflection, and move on to rewrite the script in a way that honors you.
Now before you go out and seek pain to learn, hear this: Pain happens, but
suffering is optional. When pain comes, make use of the experience, but do
not wallow in it. When you accidentally place your finger in a flame, it is
supposed to hurt just long enough for you to pull it out. If you think there
is value in keeping it there, you will be a crispy critter. Pain is a minor
element of life, unless you are indulging it. Then it becomes suffering. Get
the message and then get on with your life, which is far more about joy than
sorrow.
All experiences in life can be sorted into two categories: (1) Experiences
to be enjoyed; and (2) Experiences to be learned from. There is no slot in
between. Nothing random. Figure out which experiences fall into which
category, and you are well on your way home.
A character in the film Joe Versus the Volcano uttered this profound truth:
"Almost the whole world is asleep. Everybody you know, everyone you see,
everyone you talk to. Only a few people are awake and they live in constant
total amazement." If an experience, painful though it may have been, leaves
you closer to living in constant, total amazement, would it not be a
blessing? If you’re not sure, just ask Abby. She has walked through hell and
come out on the other side. She knows she is headed in the right direction.

"GUIDANCE"
another.
When I meditated on the word "Guidance", I kept seeing "dance" at
the end of the word. I remember reading that doing God's will is a lot
like dancing. When two people try to lead, nothing feels right. The
movement doesn't flow with the music, and everything is quite
uncomfortable and jerky.
When one person realizes and lets the other lead, both bodies begin
to flow with the music. One gives gentle cues, perhaps with a nudge
to the back or by pressing lightly in one direction or another. It's as
if two become one body, moving beautifully. The dance takes
surrender, willingness, and attentiveness from one person and
gentle guidance and skill from the other.
My eyes drew back to the word "guidance". When I saw "G" I
thought of God, followed by "u" and "i" - "God" "u" and "i" "dance":
God, you and I dance.
As I lowered my head, I became willing to trust that I would get
guidance about my life. Once again, I became willing to let God lead.
My prayer for you today is that God's blessings and mercies be upon
you and your family on this day and everyday. May you abide in Him
as he abides in you.
Dance together with God, trusting Him to lead and to guide you
through each season of your life.
This prayer is powerful and there is nothing attached. If God has
done anything for you in your life, please share this message with
someone else, for prayer is one of the best gifts we can receive.
There is no cost but a lot of rewards. So let's continue to pray for one

H.O.W.
In honesty,
WE recover,
The strength to face our fears,
In open-mindedness,
WE recover,
Our thoughts become clear,
In willingness,
WE recover,
All of our lost tears,
WE learn,
WE laugh,
WE live,
WE love,
In accepting,
WE recover,
Those lost parts of ourselves,
In surrender,
WE recover,
Today as a reality,
In our sadness,
WE recover,
Those children who love unconditionally,
WE hug,
WE smile,
WE speak,
WE are miracles,
In reflection,
WE recover,
The innocence we had forsaken,
In attending,
WE recover,
The courage that was shaken,
In prayer,
WE recover,
Ourselves as we awaken,
To the now,
and the H.O.W.
WE feel.
