Cody attends a Center school for handicap/behavioral kids. I also teach at this school. We have about 100 students averaging 6-8 students per class room. I have 6 in my class room and there are 6 in Cody's class room. In our district which is the the whole county, if a child is ESE they look at that student to see if they can function in a regular school setting. If they are not able to then they are sent to 1 of the 3 center schools in the County. Cody has been attending this school for 3 years now and he has done fantastic. Of course I have butted heads with my boss once in a while when it comes to parent issues. She wanted to put Cody into a lower functioning class room this school year. I fought her and won! He remained in the same class room from last year, same teacher, same classmates and he has continued to progress. I will probably go through the same battle next year as well.
If you do decide to put Nathan in the State School I recommend the following...
1. Tour the school
2. depending on his level (PMH, TMH, EMH) are they able to provide service that he may need.
3. Demand that he be put into a class room with Higher functioning students, and at his level. Do not allow your child to go into a class room that all the kids are lower then he is.
I honestly feel that once you tour the school tho you will see that he will be in his own comfort. I can honestly say that Cody would never be able to attend a regular school at this time. All the confusion and noises would overwhelm him. The best recommendation that I can give to you or any parent... Be invovled with the school. Let them know that you are there and very active in your child. Do surprise visits to assure that your child is being taught and working on their IEP goals. ASk to look at the documentation. Hope this was helpful info for you.
