Stephanie,
Both of my boys had the RSV shots. Brayden actually had them for
several years because he had so many respiratory problems. Luckily, my
insurance paid for them in full. Our pulmonologist told us that all
kids will get rsv at some point, but for stronger and healthier kids it
may just present like a cold. He was concerned that because my boys
had so many respiratory problems, that if they got it while they were
really little, it could be very dangerous for them. My boys were both
pre-mature and were both on oxyegen (Brayden for almost 2 years and
Zach for about 6 months)and also had reactive airways. They both spent
time in the hospital with pnemonia several times when they were young
because of their respiratory problems. Anyway, Brayden had the shots
for 3 years and Zach had them for 2. He talked to me about having both
of them get it one more year after that, but I felt like they were
strong enough and weren't having too many respiratory problems anymore
and he agreed that they were probably strong enough to stop getting
them. $500 is a really large amount though to have to pay for each
shot. If she has had respiratory problems, I would suggest that she
gets the shots, but maybe get a case manager at your insurance to help
you see if you can get them to pay a larger amount. You would probably
have to get the doctor to speak to the insurance company too. I just
found that with a case manager, we were able to get a lot more things
covered.
