I order my sodas without ice.
IT can take 10 months for cold sensitivity and all
sensitivity to die down.
Sensodyne toothpaste helps a lot.

My doc takes 1/2 for a RC.
He gives gas an novacaine
And pain pills. And antibiotics (in case).
No big deal.
Shop for doc that gives nerve stuff.
(gas-valium).
It is SO worth it.
For YOU AND THE DR.!

Have you guys ever had GAS?
IT is REALLY good for your nerves/
My dentist likes valium, but it doesn't work for
me.
I think there are dentists who specialize in
phobics like us.
Has anyone here ever been to one?
I have survived MANY root canals.
They are not that bad. ON GAS.
But if you fell pain later or the next dya, think
of doxicycline,
as much as pain pills. I reemmber getting a
scondary staph infection once.
The stupid doctor gave me pain pills.
But the pain didnt stop till I took my son's
expired Doxicycline.
Augmentin (which usually works on me) didn't touch
it.

Di,
What shot in the back did he give you? Do you mean the novacane shot or
something to relax you? Mine wouldnt give gas either. He dont use it. I would
love to find a dentist that gives Valumn or something like that. On one of my
lists the girls mentioned that their dentists give them a shot in the arm to
relax them but I dont know where to find one. I live in NY and you would
THINK there would be someone near me who does. Too bad I cant find any. : (
I will be making my appointment Sunday. Thats just making the appointment, I
dont know when it will be for. Then the anxioty of waiting and not chickening
out.
My friends wife once mentioned dry pockets. She told me that its when they
leave an air pocket in the tooth after its filled. And this can cause
infection but she also told me that the root canal would take 1 1/2 hrs so
who knows if she even knows what shes talking about. She works for a dentist
and she is in charge of handing him the tools and she does the suction thing.
Usually the suction tube works on its own so its beyond me what she does with
it.
Oh, if this helps anyone... My friend got his wisdom tooth pulled recently.
He said it took 15 minutes to do and he didnt feel anything. All he did was
hear the tooth being pulled. (ugh!!). He said it sounded like a creeking door.
How do people do this?
Debbie
Di,
It seems like we are going through the same thing. Im looking up things too.
So it dont take 1 1/2 hrs to do a root canal on a back tooth?
Sometimes my friends wife annoyes me. Why did she tell me that???? If I know
it will take like 15 minutes its way better then 1 1/2 hrs. Ugh I hate this.

I asked the same question. They wouldn't even give me gas!!! Just the shot
in the back. That is the part I hate. Yes, back tooth...i better research
dry sockets now hehe.
you'll do fine.
Di
Di,
When you go back you have to ask him about that. If there is no nerve left in
that tooth, how could it hurt. But I know that nerves are funny things. Their
can be a problem someplace and you can feel it in another place. But you
probably got the worst over with. See what he says.
Was it a back tooth he worked on? I have such a terrible fear of the dentist
I cant even begin to tell you. I dont know why. My last visit was about a
year ago, but now I have a major toothache. I know I need a root canal
because last time I was there he put a temporary filling in the tooth and I
was supposed to go back and I put it off. Now the temporary filling is
starting to fade away : ( I joined this list because I just spoke to my
friend whos wife works for a dentist and she told me that a root canal on a
back tooth takes about 1 1/2 hrs. When I heard that I panicked and here I am.
What a miserable problem this is. Does it really take 1 1/2 hrs to do a root
canal on a back tooth? And she also said it takes more then 1 trip to do it.
Boy am I glad I found you guys. Does anyone use a dentist that gives a
patient something to relax them other then Gas?
Deb
Hi Deb--
I didn't feel a thing. He dug out the filling and used little things to
clean out the pulp and i DIDN'T FEEL A THING!!! YIPPIE!!!
Dentist is doing it in two visits though. Put me on antibiotics and all. I
go back on the 29th for last step. Problem is my tooth HURTS LIKE HELL STILL
with cold things. Did it not do any good??? 625.00 down the drain??????
Why does it still hurt?? Someone told me i could have a dry socket? now my
tooth across from it hurts way worse with cold items than this one even.
Geeze. Does it ever end???
Let me know how you do......First step took all of 10 minutes or 15.....no
worse than a filling.
Di
Im new to the list and I have a terrible fear of the dentist and the
first post I saw was on your root canal. I have to have one done on a
back tooth. Can you tell me what they did and especialy how long it
took?
I need to know how long Im going to sit there in fear lol. He will be
working on a back tooth so I guess that tooth has alot of nerves.
Thanks!
Debbie
just had step one of a dental canal done and my tooth is still
as sensitive to cold as it ever was....I go back on the 29th'
of Nov. for the second part. I swear my dentist told me it
wouldn't be sensitive anymore after the first visit. Is this
normally true??
Did the Doc not do it right? Why would it still be so
sensitive to cold??
Thanks,
Dianne

I'm due to have surgery to have high points of bone (I think they

dentures more comfortable. Has anyone had this done before? Can you

Can't they give you some temporary dentures so you can chew
some soft bread?
It seems they can fashion it with temp compound. The stuff
that hardens in a few minutes...
And isn't glued or anything. It would pop on on and off, and
just give you something that "meets".
Also, keep some "Ensure" around. Vanilla or Chocolate!
My sutures took about 3 weeks. The dentist wanted me back in
10 days, but --

GO BACK THERE IN 10 DAYS!

You can cut the things short, dude...... but ask first, just

How many days post-op are you?
Keep an eye out for infection!!!! KEep a thermometer handy..

Hey, folks
I just had 15 teeth removed so I can get full upper and lower
dentures which will hopefully improve my speech with a cleft palate.
So far, no pain (praise GOD) though there is still quite a bit of
bruising around the lower jaw and swelling. (I thought my upper and
lower gums would meet with no teeth in between but they still don't
come close to each other so I'm basically on a liquid diet.)
My biggest discomfort is from a mouthful of absorbable sutures
(dissolvable stitches). I feel like I have a mouth full of guitar
strings!! The doctor said they'd dissolve in a week, but it will be
a week tomorrow and they show no sign of changing. How much longer
will they be in there? And when they do "dissolve", will they snap
off and choke me in my sleep? Toothless grin.
Thanks in advance for any responses, public or private.

Sue,
Try the "Beyond Fear Dental" site. There are some dentists that post
there. They are VERY helpful. However they don't post every day. Also
the sci.med.dentistry newsgroup is helpful....sometimes. You are most
likely to get the help you seek on Beyond Fear Site. The other site I
mentioned...sometimes the dentists are not always as serious as we would like
them to be. BTW, NO dentist can tell you exactly what you want to know re
an anticipated procedure, etc. without seeing your mouth...which cannot be
done unless you can post clinical photos on the net.
I like Beyond Fear, because the dentists there(when they are there) are
really helpful!
Good Luck to you and let me know if I can help in any way!
- beca beca4177@...
Well sorry I have feelings. I didn't think any dentists here could
"understand" this stuff.
I'll just deal with this on another group.
How about does nitrous cost alot?
Can any dentists answer this?
I'll join or start a nitrous list.
I'll let you all know if I find on or start one.
60 mgs. of valium instead of 1 hour minutes of nitrous?
Note that he was really nice before I paid him. I paid him 7K up front.
Ummmm ..... I'm the idiot.
I can buy nitrous if I wan tit. I want it for dentistry, though.
Is 7K enough for that?

That is too weird.
Have you consulted another dentist maybe one in another town?
"Readers Digest" once did a study. They took 1 patient to 5 different
dentists, and got 5 different diagnoses and 5 different treatments plans
as well as 5 different price estimates.
It sounds really shady or really weird to me. Have you asked his
pediatrician?
I'd say "SOMETHING" is wrong!
My kid never went to a dentist till she was 7. And she had no cavities.
This kid lives os Coca Cola, and she never brushes! Almost 16, and she
is still like this! No cavities! She even drank a bottle till she wa
almost 5. And No crooked teeth, either! However, her front teeth have
caramel coloring stains (like a coffee drinker) on them from the Coca
Cola! so I guess they are a little yellowed.
We are Caucasian, it that matters, light skinned. European descent, and
live in Southern California We rent a tiny apt.. We are not rich. We
"sometimes take vitamins" And she never drinks milk, hardly at all. She
has lactose intolerance. I drank tons of milk, still do, and I have
sh-tty teeth. I went to dentists, though, since I was 5.
Now I hate dentists and vice versa, I guess.
Is your babies immune system weak from lack of sleep? Is he a day-care
baby?
My kid was not a day care baby. Maybe stress or Sleep plays a part?
I think the body heals a lot and grows, during sleep.

Hi, welcome,
Did you know it is probably mostly patients here?
I do not know the standard of living where you are, or what is legal
there.
But I live in Southern California, US.
The standard of living is supposed to be high, here.
I have many questions for you and any other dentists here.
What are some of the disadvantages to the dentist for using nitrous? I
know the tanks are large, and the room we use is small. Is it also
expensive? I am super healthy (physically) and "know about and am used
to nitrous". I am not a 5 year old who does not know how to breath this
way and that. I can get oxygen if I feel high. I wrinkle my nose and
breath air, if the mixture is too strong at any point in the procedure.
I am so calm on it..
My dentist does not know WHY I need the gas so much for our work.
No, it doesn't just calm me down. I stops lots of tactile and shooting
pains.
The lidocaine is not enough.
He doesn't mind giving me 40 mg of valium!
I don't even like valium. And it NOTHING FOR PAIN!
duh! (booo hooo... I hurt....)
I need gas, even for him to take the temps off, and he won't give it to
me.
right now, and this is only half of it (maybe less) : I have a 5 piece
bridge temp, and two front temps, on the top. The filed down teeth have
live roots. (I wish they didn't) they hurt! The sensitive part is
exposed. I have been in pain for months. I am afraid every time I go
there. I just want gas. Gas for everything.
The deal WAS, I was to get gas.
HE NEEDS THE VALIUM!
my TEETH HURT SO BAD RIGHT NOW, I'm sorry I started work.
I can't even brush them.
F-him!
I am ready to ask for my 7K back and find somebody else.

Hello there I am the mom of a 5 year old child who has had some major
problems
with his teeth. He has had 6 teeth extracted since he was 2. I dont
understand the
reasons for the decay that is going on in his little mouth. Since you are a
dentist, I thought maybe you could explain. We have made sure that his diet
is good and he gets almost no sweets. We just dont understand. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my name is Sean & I have something to say about the shots at the
dentist's office. If I had a choice of getting a shot in the mouth of
novacane or getting a shot in the butt, arm, foot wherever of a local, a
vaccine, whatever..I'd rather have it in the mouth. The sting isnt really a
sting..its just a pin prick....compared to a shot on the arm..now THAT really
stings. I heard a shot during a root canal hurt like hell, specially that
one shot when they kill the root..I heard theres no other pain like it, why
does it hurt so much? Why can't the novacane stop the pain so we, the
patients, don't have to jump from the chair to the ceiling whenever we feel
the shot? I never had it, but, I feel like im going to have a few root canals
done on me soon. Long story. O.k., I'll tell it:
I was born with Moebius Syndrome, it affects the muscles & nerves on the
face. So, in short, I've had MANY, MANY fun & exciting times at the
dentist...& I do mean many! People with my rare disorder have many problems
with their teeth...some even don't have any. So anyway, I met a girl online
in '96, my mother's insurance quit on me because I was past the age of their
insurances. So I had to pay airline tickets to see her..& my health. So what
dumb thing did I do? I ignored the dentist & concentrated on the matters of
my heart. It was around 5 months after I met my, now wife, girlfriend, this
incredible pain started increasing with pain right above my jaw..it hurt like
the dickens. So, what dumb thing did I do? I overdosed on IBProfin. Maybe 14
tablets a day...it did its job anyway. 4 tablets lasted 4-5 hours. I took 3
or 4 set of them a day...about 12-16 tabs a day roughly. So, after 1 or 2
months, the pain went away. It just went away, so after 3-4 months..pain came
back, I overdosed again, same stuff..but this time, without my father
noticing, I took 4 of his big white super IBprofen tablets a day. So, this
pain went on & off until 2000, when it all went away, never came back since.
I got engaged to my girlfriend, moved to Massachusetts, and still didnt have
enough money to go to the dentist, and after cracking teeth while eating
dinner for 2 years, I now have many cracked teeth, rotten teeth, and the only
teeth im sure could use nothing more than a tartar cleanup is my front teeth.
My wife made a dental appoint this Wednesday & I'm so nervous. We live in
Rockland County, New York & she just picked a dentist at random through her
dental insurance listings. I'm so nervous just talking about it now. I know
people are afraid of the dentist, but people with my disorder are PETRIFIED
of them, because we have gone through more hell than any other person. I saw
a thing on Sedation Dentistry that might be helpful for me because I react
bad to the laughing gas dentists use, I gag easily on water, and whenever the
dentist gives me a shot, i still feel the pain....so, i hope this dentist is
very understanding and accepts sedation dentistry method, because it looks
like I just take a pill & I conk out until hes done, then i wake up..that
suits me just fine.
Because every oral surgery I had, had to be done in a hospital...& I know our
insurance won't cover all that. So I guess I'm stuck huh?
