Hello,

I am afraid to go see an oral surgeon. I went to a dentist today and
he told me I had two choices. First, I would have to have a root
canal or extract my tooth. Of course, I decided to have my tooth
extracted instead of a root canal because, I could not afford the
root canal with my insurance. But, I am also scared to have a
dentist use a drill because, I had a dentist about 6 years ago,
accidentially nick the drill to the side of my mouth which, caused a
big cut. The dentist did not want to wait for the medicine to kick
in and as a consequence, I flinched when, he was drilling my touth.
Also, I had another bad experience at a dentist office when, he gave
me laughing gas for a root canal and I had difficulties breathing. I
am very afraid to be put asleep again. I realize I do not have a
choice and I have to have this tooth removed because, I have an
abscess and the tooth is broken. Has anyone had a dentist remove a
molar (Back Tooth ) without anethesia? Do you feel I need to go to
an oral surgeon from your experience ? I would appreciate any advise
you could provide me ? I am very nervous about what to do/

Thanks,

Kim A

Why hasn't anyone tried the holistic dental association for
alternative treatment such as irrigating the gum pockets with a water
pik filled with solutions that get rid of bacteria,or co enzyme q 10
liquid for the gums, or other alternatives. At least take a look at
the Dental Institute's Web site on alternatives or Water Pik or
HydroPik, etc.? The Web has many holistic types of alternatives to try
first, but of course no one here has any way of knowing how advanced
the pockets are or anything. Maybe you should talk to some holistic
dentists or have them get a second opinion.

My wife's dentist has told her that she has gum disease and needs gum
surgery. Has anyone here undergone gum surgery? Whats involved? And
most importantly whats the typical cost? Her dentist is somewhat of a
jerk and answers no questions regarding the subject of gum disease or
what type of treatment options are available. He just kinda blows her
off and says that she needs it done regardless so there is not point in
talking about it...... Any input would be appreciated.

I neglected to mention in my earlier post that I think this dentist and endo
have some kind
of agreement, because the dentist began/did the crown work the endo does not
step on
his toes by taking it away from him so to speak. I know it probably sounded
weird in the
first message.

I am a new member to the list. I live in Portland Oregon. I had not gone to
the dentist for
10 years due to fears and phobias. Pain in my ear drove me to a dentist
referred by a
friend ... long story on the ear pain.... anyway, it turned out I had two
cracked teeth from
metal fillings having split the teeth. The dentist put temp crowns on the 2
teeth and send
me to an endo for root canals. One tooth is done and the second is partially
done as the
tooth was in such poor shape the endo had to tackle it in two appointments.
Yesterday
the temp crown came off the partially done tooth leaving a large well in the
tooth, there is
a temp filling in there however the tooth is throbbing and painful. I called
the dentist to
let him know about the crown, the office said come in right away so we can put
another
crown on, at the time the tooth had not begun hurting so the appointment would
be a
short one. When the tooth began to pain me I called the dentist back to let
them know it
was hurting so the dentist would know what kind of appointment I needed. The
permanent crown is ready for placement. Well now the dentist office calls back
and leaves
a kind if curt message telling me they cannot help me, I have to finish with the
endo then
come to them. The endo does not do crowns, so I am supposed to walk around for
a week
or two without a crown on this tooth. especially after a root canal when it will
be painful
and sensitive???

Does this seem weird to anyone? Is it safe to leave the tooth open like this?
It took me
a long time to trust this dentist now I am nervous about going back there. One
minute I
have to come in right away to fix it then it's not necessary?

Sorry for the long post, I have no idea who to ask if this is good practice or
not.

Thank you for any response anyone can give me.

with love, ophelia

Greetings....

I have extreme anxiety and panic attacks when I am in the dentist's chair.  I feel trapped, my mind spins in circles and the thought of someone playing in my mouth just freaks me out.  I want to jump out and run away, although I know the dentist is helping me.

Any suggestions on what to do inorder to stay in that chair --- I need a root canal and 2 extractions.  I wish someone would put me to sleep.

Help me conquer this fear and anxiety ----

Greetings.....

All my life, I have to take Ativan in order to sit in the dentist's
chair. I have a feeling of being tied down for 2 hours and my
thoughts in my mind go crazy. I feel trapped and I hate the thought
of someone drilling in my mouth ---- it's a horrible fear of just
being like a prisoner in a chair. I really get so scared, start to
sweat and wish someone could put me to sleep and fix all my dental work.

Any suggestions about how to help me get rid of this fear, or any
actual dental support groups that I can attend in the San Francisco
Bay Area would be appreciated.

Send info to Daniel at dpetelin@....

Thank for all for your advice and suggestions. ASAP...

Zena *Big Hugs* I'm glad that you posted here! Please don't feel
embarassed to have the dentist look at your mouth. I'm sure that
they've seen worse or just as 'bad.' It's never too late to get on
a regimen that's going to keep your teeth as healthy as can be. I
get nervous when going to the dentist. I hate the sound of the
drill and of course not many like novacaine/lidocaine, but in
actuality, the needle to numb us only hurts for a second and we
survive :)

Please do find a dentist in your area, possibly thru a free referral
service and start getting the proper dental care and who can advise
you on things that should/could be done to help your smile.
Sometimes dental schools will be more affordable and perhaps you can
look into that. That's great that you're finally really considering
helping yourself to look and feel your best! Bless you and please
take good care, Aimee

At this point, my teeth (what's left of them) are so bad that I am too embarrassed to have anyone see the inside of my mouth.  I wish there was "Fear of Dentist" dentist.  Dentists that treats cowards so it wouldn't be so embarrassing..

If anyone out there has any feedback, let me know.  I live in the San Francisco bay area and would appreciate any help.

Take care!!

z

Hello,

I just thought of looking up a group for this fear of dentists since Im
having problems with my teeth . I need to see a dentist soon but my
fear is stopping me. I already take anxiety and anti depressants pills,
not sure how to explain this but Im afraid to be sleeping for dentist
work or anything like the laughing gas etc. Im 33 years old, I have
seen the dentist in a very long time. I know that I have cavities, need
to get teeth pulled, and maybe root canals.

Maybe this group can help me,

Stephanie

I can understand your anxiety when getting your teeth worked on
along with the frustration when dealing with the dentists/staff and
them being reluctant and seeming to be puzzled by your wanting
sedation. I personally do Not get that just because I have a
traumatic brain injury (TBI) from inhalant use/huffing from when I
was 12, but I can empathize with you especially when dealing with
dentists. I get really nervous too. Though it is my understanding
that Some dentists will give nitrous to their patients. Some may
even say so in their ad in the yellow pages. For me, they just put
that numbing gel on a Q-tip for a minute or so, and I just 'suck-up'
the pain for a minute, then the numbing comes on. I do understand
your anxiety though. I also Always get the novacain/lidocaine
withOut adrenaline cause that makes one shake in itself. It just
might take more of the Non-adrenaline type to work. For me, it's
worth it. I hate even the smell of dental offices!
